I am just profoundly shocked to hear the very sad news that Ed Kroll has passed. I will truly miss his kind e-mails and insightful questions. We met when I began researching the Jewish Cemetery located in Rockdale, Milam County, Texas. One of his ancestors, Isaac Crown was killed in the Mundine Hotel fire, along with 12 others, in Rockdale in 1888 and is buried in the small Jewish Cemetery that was established in 1874 located in Rockdale, Milam County, Texas. = = = = Sacred to the memory of Isaac Crown - Second and dearly beloved son of Theodore & Rebecca Crown - Born Jan. 1, 1858 - Died June 4, 1888 = = = = Ed was very helpful as I did the necessary paperwork / application to obtain a Texas Historic Cemetery Designation for the Jewish Cemetery in Rockdale from the Texas Historic Commission. I e-mailed him photos of the gravemarkers and he was able to obtain translations from Hebrew or Yiddish into English. He was a long-distance researcher but very knowledgeable about Milam County history and his uncle who died in this 1888 fire. While we have received a Texas Historic Cemetery Designation for the cemetery, we are still awaiting the Historical Marker Plaque and plan to have a dedication / memorial service in the fall 2005. Ed was extremely interested in history of his family. He shared many stories about his family with me and how important it was that they never forgot this uncle buried in a small rural Jewish Cemetery in Texas.
