Hello List: Seeking researchers and answers : have you done work in SC probably Chatham co. area? or Johnston co. area of NC on MARTIN or MCDOWELL or ASHLEY or DODD lineages? ARE there any families of Martin, McDowell,Ashley or Riley or DODD in Milam co. Texas area OR Johnston co. NC or still in alabama area, who may connect to this family? I have been working for many years on a DODD lineage from VA to NC, SC and alabama and into texas by 1860. In tracking maiden names? You+ all know the difficulties? I have a ggg grand, johnathan DOD (jonathan dodd) in alabama 1830-40-50 and probably dead by 1860?. His presumed wife (her name is in the 'wife' slot in the 1850 census) by the name of Lusinda. She is given the birth year of 1802 showing age 48 in 1850 born SC. She is listed as Loucendia DODD as head of household in Choctaw Co. alabama in 1860. Here is what we have been told of this woman: According to some McDOWELL family members: * Lucinda Dodd first married a man by the name of McDOWELL (no marriage record found). * Her sons and a possible daughter were raised under the name of DODD?-reason not given or known?. They are recorded in the census as DODD family members. * These legends of the McDowell family seem to SHOW that after the death of the DODD husband, the sons may have again taken their McDOWELL name? unknown as Henry and William are probably the most common early SC and alabama names? WE have found some Henry and William DODDs and some Henry and William Martins and some Henry and William McDowells. Here is the MARTIN part: * According to these legends the father of Lusinda DOD (loucendia DODD) was named JOHN MARTIN and he got on a horse one day with his rifle to go on an errand and was never seen again or his fate known? Leaving an unnamed widow and family. SO: I have this possible ggg granny? Loucendia (Martin?)(possible) McDOWELL/ DODD who was last heard from in the 1860 census as 58 years old and living in choctaw co. alabama. NO probate or will has been found--as the courthouse there burned not once, but twice! I have found no guardianship or indenture of her as a young woman/ child. No marriage for a Martin Mother? No will for a Martin father? No marriage for a MCDOWELL man? I have no MARTIN data and no DODD wedding either. NO burials for johnathan dodd or loucendia( Martin) (McDowell?) Dodd. Here is a transcribed record of the 1850 census, showing children (presumed-since they are in the slots reserved for such?) DOD, JOHNATHAN, 66, M, Gun Smith, SC, Born 1884-south carolina? (We know this man lived in Johnston co. NC in 1815 most probably married in NC? He may have married first an ASHLEY woman? He may have had parents or father and step mother who lived in chatham co. He had one slave girl age 14 in 1850. His land was registered in st. stephens land office, ala. and was once part of clark and washington co.but because of boundry changes last was in choctaw co. ala. He is listed as a gunsmith. Lusinda, 48, F, SC Wm, 32, M, Planter, AL Henry, 27, M, AL Caroline E., 11, F, AL Isaac M., 9, M, AL DODD, Ashley Haywood., 35, M, Planter, NC, (my gg grandparents. who we think may have been born of an early first DODD marriage -possibly to an ASHLEY family+ woman who probably died after two births-last one in 1820? (no marriage record found for his parents? but there were ASHLEY families living in Johnston Co. NC, who later went to Mississippi.) Louisa(lucy ann CAVE), 34, F, SC(barnswell dist) Elisabeth, 13, F, AL James M., 10, M, AL Marilla, 8, F, AL L.T., 6, M, AL Amelia, 1, F, AL Henderson (M?), born 1852 male, ala.
