Funeral services will be today at 10 a.m. at Philips and Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with the Rev. Bill Whaley of Murray Street Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in the Liberty Cemetery near Milano. Visitation was held Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Black was born Aug. 2, 1913 in Thorndale to Andrew and Ethel Mamie (Small) Penney. She was married Alex Black in 1928 in Cameron and lived in the Hanover and Gause area for 11 years before moving to Rockdale in 1939. Black worked as a operator for Southwestern Bell in Rockdale starting in 1946 and transferred to Austin until her retirement in 1968. She was a rancher and she enjoyed horses and competed in rodeos winning many flag and barrel races. During her employment she was a Communication Workers of America Representative for a period of time. She was a member of Rockdale's Garden Club, Rockdale Roping Club, Murray Street Church of Christ and various other women's organizations. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Black on Jan. 5, 1999; and her parents. Black is survived by her daughter Nadine Binion of Cameron; brother, Harol Penney of Rockdale; two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
