Hello Gordon and DODD researcher, Here is a long winded update of the DODD data and basically the structure of all we know-but showing mostly the names and places and puzzles . Gordon Howard found them for me in the 1850 census- and I have tried to fill in and connect the very early DOD-DODD families. I have had less success in finding the early stories-However, using the proven data of the Texas Dodd families we are able to flesh out these people and their lives- and they have proved most interesting . Thanks for any ideas or help. Judy Hugg Grimes BELOW is my core DODD family. I have been unable to locate the mother of old jonathan dodd or the possible first wife of his son ashley haywood dodd or james riley dodd with documentary certainty???. There is a will in chatham co. NC(rootsweb archives) and it gives sonship by name to a jonathan dodd and bro. George.(who we think may be step children to the living wife?) daughter mentioned and the sons+ Benjamin and another get family lands. The father requested the two older and probably already working at careers--to aid the younger . With documents:census- and tax records-a strong connection with the farms being side by side, we connect johnathan dod (dodd) as parent of ashley haywood dodd & james riley dodd who went to texas--it is like once the families moved?--they no longer had any connection tothe others mentioned in the wills and the census.(it is a good arguement for the legend of different fathers? dodd or mcDowell?)(we have marriage certificates for ashley, james riley and some of their children) . Benjamin DODD of the will, took his living- mother and moved to Mississippi.(census) This is Choctaw Co. Ala. 1850. federal. This family moved to texas before 1857-san augustine co. tx.and participated in a wedding in san aug of synthia(Cynthia) elizabeth to theodore graebener. the family farm in alabama sold in 1860 according to BLM records-ashley haywood dodd died march 1860. DOD, JOHNATHAN, 66, M, Gun Smith, SC, died before 1860(not mentioned census) Lusinda, 48, F, SC head of household in 1860 census-with child of 14 by the name of DUGAL DODD--relationship unknown? maiden name unknown. Wm, 32, M, Planter, AL-lost in time Henry, 27, M, AL-lost in time Caroline E., 11, F, AL-may have gone to tx married, man name of davis.? Isaac M., 9, M, AL-unknown-I think the war ate him. DODD, A., 35, M, Planter, NC, ashley haywood dodd died in san augustine co. tx. on march of 1860 of pleurisy.(mortality index) He was born in johnson co. NC(presumed as his father is listed in a tax list for that county-). Louisa, 34, F, SC (lucy ann( cave )rabon dodd autry)We have all three marriage recs. (Synthia )Elisabeth, 13, F, AL-married theo grabener- a german immigrant in tx. James M., 10, M, AL-married Malissa elizabeth caroline patterson-died in camp rondo, ark. of disease in the army- in 1863 january. no issue . Marilla, 8, F, AL-married james n. patterson-called, Marcella louise (lucy) dodd patterson, she may have remarried a man name DUNLAP? according to a letter by maude mclean dodd, marilla lucy dodd patterson was widowed in 1862 before december, soldier , husband, died in camp rondo, ark, with his bro in law. of disease. (we have the military files of the dodd boy and the patterson boy) measles and flux killed them both two months apart. One son of james n Patterson and Marilla (called Lucy) Dodd, named: james m. patterson born 1862 and taken for unknown reason-other than he was only son of their dead boy?. by his patterson grandparents and taken to louisiana and raised---is found and located in the 1870 census for st. landrys parish living in the home of his grandparents. The mother never saw her son again after he was weaned .( He was named: james M. Patterson, born tx 1862). We have lost him in LA in 1880-1900. WE do have a wife name for him--but do not know his fate. L.T., 6, M, AL-Louis taylor dodd, is in san augustine census in 1860- not found in 1870, wed victoria asenath collins 1872 Brazos county tex-moves to bandera co. with mother, cousin mary bowen and wife 1880, milam by 1885. Amelia Jane Louisa, 1, F, AL-married d.a.bowen and died in childbirth-had one child mary bowen grabener-who grew up and died in childbirth--her son lived two weeks less than two years.(married her first cousin charles grabener of milam co. texas) one young son of ashley and lucy- born after census-1852 by name of henderson dodd. This young man shows up in the 1860 census for san aug. tx and then disappears. We think he is the child known as "malcom" who was killed by the kick of a horse to the chest--according to a written family letter of Maude McLean DODD . He and his older brother louis taylor dodd were trying to gentle it to ride. (no father alive-older brother james dead in war- Uncle living in another county-no men to help the boys) DODD, JAMES, 20, M, Planter, AL, james riley dodd was in CSA surviver/ pensioner - in walker co. tex by 1860 . Married 2. mrs. m.a. jackson( 1874) and 4 . mrs Mahala Bankston williams dodd( 1899). he died in 1900 jan. (we have found one other marriage #3, for this guy and one divorce) Sarah, 19, F, AL-sarah caves dodd, dies before 1874- unknown CAVE relationship to her sister in law or the milam co. cave family of Henry cave(brother to lucy ann dodd) Larra D., 4, F, AL-laura ann marries LAGRONE Fordonia, 2, F, AL-louisa fordonia unknown other children: martha louise dodd: married james hairston in milam co.(age 15-raises her stepchildren of her cousin millie cave hairston) bears other children to james j. hairston. William Henry DODD marries betsy elliott (certificate) and dies or disappears young-possibly one child?Betsy (elizabeth elliott married a widower : monterville cotton,(certificate) with children and in just a few months gave birth to a girl called: Estella (stella) cotton and this young woman grew up to marry the oldest son of louis taylor dodd and victoria collins) Paternity / william henry dodd/ and betsy elliott? is unknown as his fate is unknown--the monterville man raised the girl as his own child--(could have been a love child ? speculation-no data) Lucy DODD, unknown(last child of sarah caves dodd and james riley dodd) He had others by one of the three women he married in texas. He divorced one-because she called him an "OLD FOOL" outloud to his friends and family(per data divorce papers and marriage papers, found by researcher James Williams of Milam Co). The last one he lived with for less than a year, got a new set of teeth and died smiling(as per letter lynette schroeder ). (grinjudy) I have long searched for earlier family for our jonathan dodd of choctaw co. alabama.( 1784-1860?) WE think the chatham co. will is him...by virtue of age and place of birth on the census...and its the only jonathan we have ever found by the sirname of DODD.( thanks to gordon howard) HE may have been taught (apprenticed-guardianship?) by the john DODD, who had a gunsmith shop advertized in charleston, Virginia, , who made guns for general washington.(see washingtons personal papers in nat archives)? It is possible however NOT PROVEN IN ANY WAY--that John DODD of Charleston VA had any indenture or guardianship- of a relative or son of william dodd, by the n ame of Johnathan dod (dodd). Jonathan Dodd is listed as a gunsmith in the 1850 choctaw alabama census and he leaves a long rifle to his son james riley dodd who carried it throughout the civil war and returns to texas with it and gives it to a son and child of Berrin Williams and mahala bankston williams dodd, the stepson of james riley dodd). I have been unable to locate any record of a DOD (dodd) gunsmithy or shop in Choctaw co. alabama. He is listed as a gunsmith-but his sons are listed as planters. WE have been unable to track a George DODD and have lost the track of William, HENRY and ISAAC and CAROLINE dodd of this census..ALL other people we have found their lives and data and documentation. Nothing for these tho.(a woman of the mcDowell lineage said that William, Henry and Isaac M. were raised as DODD men but were in actuality McDowells. I have been unable to prove this and it remains a legend) We have not been able to truthfully document caroline, either. Any help with a marriage for jonathan dodd ? He was born 1784 and the woman of the 1850 census presumed to be his wife, Loucendia b. 1802 (is said by the mcdowell woman to have been a Martin---AGAIN--unproven.) It is said a lucendia mcdowell wife of the man Henry (dodd?)McDOWELL, is buried in bladon springs. ala. ??again unknown data. Help with any probate or wills or burials would be a miracle as the choctaw co. courthouse burned not once--but twice. I have been unable to find any burial in washington or clark counties--which the farm did not move-but the boundries of the counties did move. The Dodds of Johnathan Dodd the old gunsmith, left Johnston co.NC and was in washington co. and clark co. and choctaw co.by 1830-40-50 and Loucendia Dodd is shown as head of household in 1860 choctaw co. alabama--with a 14 year old boy name of Dugal Dodd (unknown relationship) Johnathan dodd is listed on the slave index as owning a young girl slave in 1850 very young-- 14 ? Their land was registered BLM in st. stephens land office.(now a vanished community) ( I have been unable to find if the MARTIN or MCDOWELL families had land or homes near- by the DODD farms.?) There are many DODD familys in ALA in the perion of 1780-1880--some went to georgia and some to mississippi? Our clan went almost straight through Louisiana and TX. James Riley Dodd brother to my gg grandfather ashley haywood dodd moved to walker co. texas in 1860 and married three texas women around milam co. dying in 1900. My gg grandmother lucy ann (louisa CAVES) Rabon/dodd/ autry( certificates) is said to be buried in the sand grove cemetery of Hurt/Graham in the very old section-in the Henry CAVE family plots in a unmarked and unlisted grave-but plainly an occupied grave--having the memorial marker on top of the depression--naming the wife of Henry Cave as Nancy BASS cave and she lies in a different county in tx. (So, we believe lucy lies to the right of her brother-and in that same section is her child amelia bowen-also unmarked and her grand daughter mary bowen grabener and the child of mary grabener, lucys great grandchild(these two being marked grabener graves but smack dab in the middle of the CAVE family plots and a great mystery of the CAVE family for many years) The Bass family has declined to move the memorial marker from the occupied ground. --as it was most probably nancy bass cave who granted lucy caves rabon dodd autry the burial space in the first place?. (per data from Mrs. Burch) Associated lines are: CAVE, REED/REID,BROWN,SEALES(sears?), POUNDS, COLLINS, GRABENER, BOWEN, LAGRONE, HAIRSTON, PATTERSON. Hardy, Petty, Massey, Kite, Sampier, Crutcher, Cleveland, Norrid, Carpenter, Kunkel, Nelms, Batten. THANKS FOR THE HELP. JUDY HUGG GRIMES, YORBA LINDA CA. -=-------------------------------- Judy, Gary, A couple years ago or so, There was a lady that lives in MO obtained copies of the early wills for the Dodds of Johnston Co. I have been looking through my database for days trying to locate her ID so I could email her. She has been there (Johnson Co) and was the one that sent me the will for Captain David Dodd of Sampson Co. I don't know why a copy of his will is on file in Johnston Co., unless in some way they are related. So, according to my understanding, there are five early wills there, David Dodd plus William Dodd and three others, names I cannot remember. There could very well be information on Jonathan Dodd contained in one of the wills. Sure would be worth a try. I will keep looking in my database. The gentleman I told you about recently, McDuffie I believe, is descended from the William Dodd. He lives in Fayetteville, Cumberland Co just to the south of Johnston Co. Good hunting, Gordon -----I was unable to find the McDuffie connection. I did find with Gordons help a william dodd will in chatham co. NC on rootsweb archives. There seemed to be other dodd related lineages mentioned in wills of that county. I have found nothing of a birth or marriages--death for a johnathan (jonathan) DOD (dodd). He is presumed to have died before 1860 enumeration of census--I have not found a mortality index for alabama choctaw co. 1860. I have not found death for Isaac M., William, Henry, or the woman presumed to be Lucinda (MARTIN??) DODD (MCDOWELL??) or any marriage records of other marriages--land sales or burials. There are many McDOwell men called william and Henry in Clark Co. alabama. And the CAVE/REID or REED sister to lucy ann (cave)rabon /dodd/autry who was known as loucendia cave reid--lived in the ashley haywood dodd home in the 1850 census-as per the original digital copies--but do not show up on the transcriptions. bY 1860 SHE IS in clark co. and we believe she died young. Johnathan DOD (Dodd) his mother, his(Loucendia MARTIN?) wife's maiden name? His possible first wife possibly an ASHLEY FAMILY? ? His burial, remains a mystery. His brother George also a mystery? ----------------------------- thanks judy hugg grimes
