Tom Williams, whose cranium caught the ball, is still alive, but the physicians who have passed sentence on him say that, if he does not die, another damaging case will have to be recorded against the profession. The consoling though the negro’s friends have is, that he was shot in the head instead of some vital spot = = = = Galveston Daily News – Thur., 24 Oct 1876, p. 1, c. 3 Rockdale, Oct 23 - Tom Williams, the nergo who was shot in the head about a year ago, died here this morning. Though his physician, Dr. A. C. Walker, probed the wound when it was first made, and inserted the instrument at least 3-inches into the negro’s brain, the recovered, and, with the ball in his brain, has been doing hard manual labor ever since. As Dr. Walker predicted, however, he died suddenly of the pressure of the leaden bullet on the brain. It is a very singular case and interesting in surgery.
