He died Thursday, July 25, 2002 at his residence in Rockdale. Mr. Pontruff, a lifelong Rockdale resident, was born Jan. 3, 1951 in Brenham to the late Clarence George Pontruff and Mary Inez (Cryer) Pontruff. He was a maintenance person at Wal-Mart of Rockdale for over 15 years, single father, VFW Post Commander of Post #6525 for three years and was a US Air Force veteran serving in Vietnam. Mr. Pontruff was preceded in death by his parents and a half-brother, Jim Jackson. Surviving are: Daughters, Heather Amber Pontruff and Melinda René Pontruff both of Rockdale; brothers, Benny Pontruff and wife Deborah of Milano and Clarence Pontruff and wife Brenda of Cameron; sisters, Deborah Pontruff Morales and husband Richard of Amarillo and Anna Pontruff Templin and husband Willie of Cameron; half-sister, Dessie Jackson McClain and husband David of Longview; half-brother, Bill Jackson of Longview. = = = = = = "Suicide ruled in death of local man" The shooting death of a 51-year-old Rockdale man Thursday morning at his Broadnax Street home has been ruled a suicide. Justice of the Peace Twila Harris held an inquest at the scene after the body of George E. Pontruff was discovered just after 11 a.m. by a visiting minister. A shotgun was used, according to police. "There was no doubt about it. No suspicion of foul play," Sgt. J. D. Newlin said. "Four suicide notes were found." Harris did not order an autopsy Two days previously Pontruff had been arrested for indecency with a child. He was released from the Milam County Jail on $50,000 bond.
