The victim is a promising young man, John Cole, a resident of Rockdale and lately a brakeman on the I. & G. N. railroad. Cole it seems, was attempting to board a freight train and missing his hold, was crushed beneath the wheels, severing his left arm near the shoulder and crushing his left leg below the knee. Owing to some delays that it seems could not be avoided, the patient lost a good deal of blood. Dr. Morrison and Dr. Markin of this place and Dr. Horton and Dr. Walker of Rockdale are in attendance, but up to 8 p.m., Cole was too weak from loss of blood to endure the amputation of his mangled limbs. There is little hope for his recovery. Galveston Daily News – Tues., 4 June 1878, p. 1, c. 4 Death - Rockdale, June 3 - The funeral of John B. Cole, killed by being run-over by a train at Hearne on Thursday, was largely attended and all stores were closed. No event has ever shocked this community more.
