    1. Volding, Earl William - obit
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Volding, Girda, Helmer Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hkB.2ACE/9667 Message Board Post: Rockdale Reporter, Thur., 22 June 2006 Earl William Volding was born on March 8, 1926, to Otto and Girda Volding in Louise. He has one younger brother, Don (aka “Cotton”) who currently lives in the Dallas area. Earl was a graduate of UT Austin with a major in economics. After a short assignment with the U.S. Navy, Earl joined Alcoa in 1949 as an accountant at the company’s Point Comfort Works. He was quickly transferred to the Rockdale plant where he met and fell in love with Joyce Helmer, his boss’ daughter. They married in Rockdale on Feb. 12, 1954. The corporate office in Pittsburgh, PA, beckoned Earl to move that same year. Earl developed a fine taste in antiques while in Pittsburgh. He enjoyed spending weekends shopping for antiques in the countryside and many an evening found him refurbishing prized possessions. Earl and Joyce had two children, a daughter Paula and a son Daniel. Earl’s career advanced and in 1969, he was transferred to Alcoa’s Century City, CA, office as vice president of finance and administration. He enjoyed playing tennis in California and made friends quickly. Joyce continued to entertain and became a gourmet cook in their Pacific Palisades home. In 1973, the Volding family underwent another lifestyle change. Earl was transferred to Kingston, Jamaica, where he was second in command for Alcoa Minerals of Jamaica. He enjoyed his position with Alcoa and continued to make lifelong friends with many Jamaicans. He became a Paul Harris Fellowship Member of Rotary International and was on the board of directors of Priory School. The Voldings enjoyed traveling abroad during their years in Jamaica. They loved visiting friends in England, Scotland, Greece, Spain, Portugal and especially Italy where they returned often. Unhappy with the concept of early retirement, Earl parted with Alcoa after 35 years of continued service. He continued to live and work in Kingston and built a penthouse apartment on the north coast of Jamaica. He enjoyed perfecting his skills at tennis, bridge and poker in between his evenings at social functions. Earl was a devoted husband, friend and father. His journey ended back in Rockdale were he and his wife reunited with old frieds and Texas roots. Earl will be remembered for his passion for life, wisdom of economics, knowledge of finance and compassion for giving so freely to others. Those who knew him will agree he was a soft spoken, gentle hearted, true southern gentleman. He will be missed by many.

However, I recognize the Meadows and Lee connection from Jackson County, TN though my records included a male Lee and female Meadows, the reverse of your couple-quite possibly siblings. Look at the Jehu Lee family in Jackson County after 1800 when Jehu and half-brother, Abner Lee, moved from VA. If you can connect you will go back to Richard Henry Lee of Buckingham Co. VA who had children by two wives-Mary Grisham and Elizabeth Miller. Their children were born mid 1700s. I would look for Meadows in Buckingham Co. and Washington Co. VA

    1. Pool, Smith, Slaughter, Feltz/Felts
    2. Carlie Currer
    3. Hello List, I am seeking information on the following people: Julius "John" Henderson Smith and his wife Arimenta Prentice Felts James William Pool and his wife Mary Elizabeth Slaughter Julius Henderson Smith married Arimenta Prentice Felts in Hinds County Mississippi on May 9, 1855. The 1860 Census shows them living in Canton, Mississippi with one child, Albert. In 1870 they are living in Carroll County Mississippi with one child, James 11 years, I believe this is the same child Albert from the 1860 Census. In 1880 they are living in Milam County with two children Jonas A. 21 years and Nonia E. 7 years. According to this Census Julius was born in Maryland and so were his parents. Arimenta said she was born in Mississippi and her parents were both born in Virginia. According to some family history that was put together by a family member in the 60's Julius was born in Baltimore, MD in 1825. He died April 1907 according to the same info. In 1900 Census he is living with his son Jonas Albert Smith who married Emma Addie Pool and their children in Milam County. I have no idea where Julius Henderson Smith is buried. Emma Addie Pool is the child of James William Pool and Mary Elizabeth Slaughter. James William Pool (1829-1926) is buried in McCann Cemetery near Rogers. For many years his grave was unmarked. But a few years ago one of my cousins saw to it that he got his headstone, he served in the Civil War. I have no idea where Mary Elizabeth Pool is buried. I also do not know anything about either of their parents or sibling. I did find a 1860 Census for Colorado County, Texas with a W.W. Slaughter as the head of household, wife Mary E. Slaughter, and two children E.M. Slaughter and Ellen. At this point I can't be sure this is the right family. Her obituary says she was of the "Barclay section". I am assuming this means they lived near Rosebud. It also says she is buried in Woodland Cemetery. Family members have told me that she has a Woodsmen of the World headstone, but I have been unable to find it. In 1880 James and Elizabeth were in Milam County with their children Emm! a, James W.W., Thomas M., and George C. Also living with them is Elizabeth's mother M. Slaughter. In 1900 they are living in Precinct 5 of Milam County with their children Warner, Victoria and Nona E. Elizabeth's mother is still living with them, she said she was born in Virginia. I don't know where she or her daughter are buried. If there is anyone who has any info on these folks I sure would love to hear from you. Thanks in advance. Carlie
