HILLIER FUNERAL HOME = = = = = Bryan-College Station Eagle, Fri., 6 Oct 2006 Bryan, Texas Sam Rowland was a man who loved the Lord, his family, his friends and the Law. He believed in the promises of God and the justice of Law. He went home on October 3, 2006. Some people just leave a larger space when thy leave. Sam is one who will. Sam was born in New Blaine, AR on February 9, 1934 and died October 3, 2006 in Bryan, Texas. He is predeceased by a son, Scott Edward Rowland, his parents Wordna Reed Rowland and Ray Davis Rowland and his sister Wanda Vorlop. He will be greatly missed by his family: his wife, Betsy Kay Rowland of Bryan, daughters Melinda Claire Rowland of Lafayette, LA, Michele Hanlon of San Antonio, sons, Stuart Ellison Rowland of Arlington and Sean V. Ryan and his wife Glenda Mitchell Ryan of Tyler, brother-in-law Bill Vorlop of Dallas and two nephews and their families. Sam was blessed in recent years with the addition of two grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren through Sean and Glenda Ryan. Sam came from a family of educators. He graduated from Highland Park High school in Dallas; Texas A & M in 1955 with an accounting degree and in 1960 from SMU School of Law. He like to say he got his education at A & M and did his trade school work at SMU. He came to A & M on a Baseball scholarship and had a life long love of "the game". He loved Texas A & M sports and traditions and he loved the Astros. Sam had a long an interesting business career. He began his corporate experience at Texas Instruments in Dallas and went on to form a pubically held company in the early days of microchips. He spent many years in the corporate world before opening his own Law Firm in Houston, Texas in 1972. Sam loved the practice of law and was a member of the bar for 46 years. He liked to say "that is why they call it the practice of Law and I'm not quitting until I get it right!" He was the senior partner of Rowland and Keim in Houston for 18 years. In 1990 Sam decided to come to what he called "God's Country" and opened Sam E. Rowland, P.C. He practiced in Bryan/College Station until his death. He had the privilege of teaching a course at Texas A & M College of Business for 18 years teaching young Aggies about starting their own business . Many of these students did start their own companies and allowed Sam to be their attorney and of this he was very proud. Sam was a member of the Corp of Cadets at Texas A & M, the 12th Man Foundation Executive Board, Past president of the A & M Letterman's Association . He loved his table of buddies at the Bryan Rotary Club each week. He was a member of the Silver Haired Supper club of Highland Park, The Texas A & M Past Presidents club of both Houston and San Antonio. He was an Member of the Houston Bar Association and the Brazos County Bar Association. His believed that his most important affiliation was his relationship with Jesus Christ and truly believed that his job as an attorney was the role of a "parakletos, one who comes beside you and brings counsel. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Bryan for 20 years and a was now a member of Little River Baptist Church in Jones Prairie, Texas which had become very dear to his heart as well. Please remember Sam, when the Aggies kick off and the Astros are at the plate, it was the nearest he could get to heaven on earth. Hillier Funeral Home
