Rockdale Messenger, Thur., 4 July 1901 Death - Nacogdoches, June 26 - The death of "Long John" Williams, briefly chronicled from Rockdale a few days ago in The News, was read with sad reflections; for, while he was only a private, he was as well known in the brigade to which he belonged during the Civil War as if he had been a regimental officer, and his notoriety enviable. He was one of the original Sibleys Cavalry Brigade that went to Santa Fe, NM fought the battles of Val Verde and Glorieta and in Louisiana the battles of Mansfield, Pleasant Hill and many others. He was not only noted for his long light hair, which gave him the name of "Long Haired John Williams," and for his being tall, lithe and slender, 6-feet 3-inches, hence called "Long John Williams," but also for his get there, his infallible success under all difficulties. His fellow soldiers always expected him to win the race, be ahead in the chase, escape danger and come through first. An instance illustrative of his character and characteristics was the big picket skirmish and famous 10 mile race in which about 30 of our men were run down and captured east of Vermillionville, now called Lafayette, LA. Seventeen of Co. H, to which Williams belonged, was on picket duty 12 miles east of Vermillionville under Captain Linn. The enemy were at New Iberia. Captain Alexander with his entire Co. H was sent to relive Linn and just after reaching the picket camp the enemys cavalry suddenly dashed in among ours, yelling, shooting and slashing with sabers. Friend and foe became mixed up in the confusion and our pickets retreated, at times going at full speed and occasionally halting and firing back at the pursuing troops. This a running fight on horseback upon the open prairie was kept up for 10 miles. Besides the heavy loss in prisoners, there were several Confederates killed and wounded. When Williams realized the danger as the race proceeded he struck off to himself, galloping across the prairie, and three Federal cavalrymen pursued him, firing at him as he ran. Two of them soon dropped back and one kept on. Williams had saved back two or three loads of his revolver, and as soon as the two pursuers were gone he gave his horse a sudden check, being a cowboy horseman, and the other cavalryman darted ahead. Williams shouted at him, "By---, one man cant run me -- surrender!" at the same time firing at him and dashing on after him. Mr. Yankee, as we called him, rolled off his horse quickly and dropping his gun said, "Dont shoot any more!" Of course Williams took him along. The two soon met a Confederate officer who knew the prisoner and told Williams to treat him kindly and said the prisoner had once had him a prisoner and treated him well. I think the prisoners name was Virgil or Vernon, and he was from Indiana. He was a genial, jolly good fellow. -- J. E. Mayfield in "Galveston News" ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Lynna Kay Shuffield P. O. Lynna, Thanks for that article. Look forward to seeing anything else that you might come across. I had heard that there was a fire there. Of course, there was also the fire in the courthouse in Cameron. Can't think of that date. Too bad. Woudln't it have been neat to have all of the Rockdale papers now. I certainly appreciate you making all of this available to Milam County researchers!! You do a great job. Thanks for the information. I just reviewed the site and found many of my ancestors buried there. Hilton Hunt
My Grays(my husbands) came first to Bell Co. then Milam in 1870s from Meriwether Co. Ga. The first one was Emanuel Gray and wife MaryAnn Elizabeth McSwain,he was in CSA in Ga. They had a dozen or more children,he is buried in Walker Creek Cem. in Milam Co. and she is buried in Coleman Co.,died several years later and lived with some of her children there. Their son William Allen Gray is my husband's ancestor, who is unmarked grave Walker's Ck. per family info. His wife was a Casper. There was anolther Gray family in Milam, unrelated I believe,a Dr. Gray and family. Marion

Hi, Marion ~:) I see that you are researching the GRAY surname in TX. Are you connected to any of the Milam Co GRAYs and, if so, which ones? I am connected by marriage to the descendants of Daniel H. GRAY & Naomi THOMAS, whose grandson, Seeley D. 'D.S.' GRAY, married my paternal great-grandaunt, Gatsey/Gatsie M. BULLOCK, in Milam Co., on 23 Dec 1880. After that, they seem to have "dropped off the face of the earth". I have been able to make contact with people connected to other branches of this family, but Seeley and Gatsey are giving me a headache from banging against that "brick wall". I am so pleased to be on the list, from the digest form which is not easy. I want to thank you for the news items from long ago. If our ancestors were "colorful" or vagabonds, thieves they are just that more fun.I thought for awhile most were saints as that is how several little 90 yr.old ladies represented theirs while helping me with genealogy. Just kidding. I keep in touch with a list in Ky. connected with Land Between the Lakes, formerly "between the rivers". They formed a group of volunteers and in the spring start their cemetery cleaning on weekends. They have been going several years now. They enjoy it and you can imagine how they have done"good". I enjoyed Asa's cemetery story and wonder how many more lost graveyards there are in Milam. I also appreciate the interest some have taken in the county's history. You call Alcoa at least 24 hours in ADVANCE and they will work with you. There are papers to sign and you will be accompanied. M-F is easiest because of plant staffing. Its well worth the trip and your time. Richards and Richards Providence or Richards Black are on Alcoa. I was there last week--but there are no Clouds there as I recall. Richards, Childs and those who were related to William T J Richards and Anna Humphrey Richards. Richards Providence is primarily fieldstones. They are in Noreen's book. Tom, There is a link from the main cemetery page of Asa Castleman's website to a page that has a hand-drawn map showing the location of Freezeout Cemetery, as well as an aerial photo of the area surrounding ALCOA showing the location of the cemetery. The URL for the map page is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~acastleman/freezeout_cleanup/alcoa_freezeout.htm If you would like to contact Asa directly, his e-mail address is: AsaLCastleman@aol.com (:~ HAPPY HUNTING ~:) Janice http://pages.ivillage.com/ancestorworld/ http://pages.ivillage.com/ancestorworld/milamcountykin/ ---------- At 03:38 PM 7-19-2002, you wrote: >how does one get to those cemeteries ? > >At 03:21 PM 7/19/2002 , you wrote: >Tom, there are no Clouds buried in the list shown on Castleman's tombstone >list of those buried in the Freezeout Cemetery (as he calls it).
