    1. [TXMILAM] Re: Obituary of Elijah Goodnight
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Goodnight Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hkB.2ACE/614.914 Message Board Post: I do have a copy of an obituary for Elijah from the Cameron Herald, it was given to me years ago and the date was not noted. The obituary mentions "something" from the Waco Tribune-Herald. Perhaps, a search could be made for it. Last Soldier Of Mexican War Buried On Texas Grounds Central Texas can lay claim to being the final resting place for the last soldier of the Mexican War, Elija Goodnight, who is buried at Concord near Waco. Goodnight, as was told in the Waco Tribune-Herald recently, was from one of the famous old pioneer Texas families. Elija hit Central Texas when the Indians were still raiding the settlers. He fought in the Mexican War and later he was a forager with the Confederate Army in the Civil War. He was a freighter and farmer. He was a big man, not fat but had a big frame. The Goodnights originally came to this country from Germany and settled in Pennsylvania. They came to Texas when Elija and his brother, Charlie, were only boys and Texas was still a Republic. Here they settled near Old Nashville, at the junction of the Brazos and Little Rivers, in Milam County. Elija joined the Army when he was only 17 and fought in the Mexican War. For a while after the war, Elija was a freighter driving an ox team between Calvert and Houston. He often stayed on the prairie outside of Houston because the town was filled with Yellow fever and he was afraid of the disease. In the Civil War Elija served the South by rounding up cattle and taking them to the Confederates so they could feed the soldiers. Elija once owned the land where the General Tire plant is now located. Part of the James Connally Air Force Base is on land that was in the Goodnight farm. Elija has many descendants in Central Texas. Among them is Ed Westbrook, a grandson, of 100 West 15th St, Cameron. When he died on Dec. 1, 1920, he was 89 years old. He was buried in Concord Cemetery on the Old Corsicana Road. A marble marker at his grave lists him as "the Last Mexican War Veteran, 1848."

    1. [TXMILAM] Rockdale - Sept. 1877
    2. Lynna Kay Shuffield
    3. Galveston Daily News – Fri., 21 Sept 1877, p. 5, c. 7 "Rockdale" In Milam county, about 20-miles West of Brazos river, about 16-miles South of Cameron, the county seat of Milam county, was opened for business in Feb. 1874 and now has a population of 1,500. There are two hardware stores, two drug stores, six dry goods stores, eight grocery stores, and others; one church building and three schools. The Odd Fellows are erecting a two-story house, the lower room for school purposes and the upper for the Lodge room. There are ten brick business houses now in the course of erection. Rockdale gets trade from the counties of Milam, Bell, Lee, Burleson and a portion of Williamson. The greater part of this county, especially the southern part, is timbered, the northern and Western parts being prairie. Corn, cotton, oats, wheat and millet are grown, and yields are, 60 to 100 bushels per acre; corn, 30 to 50 bushels; cotton, ½ to 1 bale; wheat, 15 to 25 bushels; millet, 2 to 3 tons. Fruit and vegetables grow well. The western part of this county is well adapted to raising cattle and sheep, the prairies yielding rich grass, the timber affording shelter from the occasional northers which visit it. The rich bottoms of the Brazos river on the east and the Little river, which runs through the center of the county afford thousands of acres of land unsurpassed in any country for fertility and endurance. lands vary in price from $2 to $23 per acre. In this county the timber upon the land bought is usually sufficient to fence it and build a log house. Near this town it is thought that the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe [rail]road, when built, will cross the International and Great Northern railroad. Lands can be rented at $5 per acre, money rent; or for one- third of corn and one-quarter of cotton; or where the landlord furnishes everything, for half the entire crop. Farm lands are paid from $12 to $15 per month. Lumber sells at $20 per thousand feet rough. The present crop is large, and immigrants will find provisions low. Five hundred immigrants can be supplied with homes and lands to cultivate upon the terms herein stated. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Lynna Kay Shuffield P. O. 1. [TXMILAM] HAIRSTON/GRABENER MARRIAGE
    2. Hello, the list. Below is a portion of a letter trying to figgure out some Hairston/Grabener family relationship. Familys : DODD, CLENDENNIN, COTTON, KITE, WILLIAMS, HARDY,PETTY,MCLEAN, LOWREY, BRYANT,GRABENER, ELLIOTT, PATTERSON,POUNDS, COLLINS, GREEN, KELLAR,CRUTCHER, SAMPIER, NARRID, and a dozen others at least---ALL were in MILAM CO and intermarried. Cecil E. Grabener as being "Single". Later, you mention an Elva Grabener. Cecil and Elva Hairston were man and wife. I knew them well. Dad and Cecil use to be fishing buddies and Dad always call Cecil "Grab". Elva worked as a clerk in one of Rockdale Dry Goods Stores. I forgot which one---Lowensteins, I think. Cecil is a son of Charles Madison Grabener and brother of Kay Grabeners dad, Kermit Doyle Grabener. So Elva is a Hairston? As in a descendant of the daughter: Martha Louisa Dodd Hairston, child of James Riley Dodd that married James J. Hairston? So that would have James Riley DODD's granddaughter marrying Cynthia Dodd Graebner's grandson? James Riley DODD and Cynthia DODD Grabener were uncle and niece. Anyone know other relationships in the Hairston family that connected to the families listed up above? ---------------------------------- CYNTHIA DODD GRABENER and MARTHA LOUISA DODD HAIRSTON were first cousins with their fathers being brothers. (and both of their mothers were of maiden name: CAVE)

    1. [TXMILAM] Pension testimony of Martha Hairston
    2. Pension file for mahala dodd last wife of james riley dodd-(pension file papers from austin-CSA records) Jeff T. Kemp, county judge, Milam Co. Cameron, TX State of Texas: Co. Of milam. "Before me the undersigned authority on this day personally appeared Mrs. Martha Hairston, known to me to be a credible person, who, being by me duly sworn deposes and says, " I am the daughter of the late J. Dodd. I was a child during the Civil War, but I well remember that my father was a Confederate soldier. I know tht he rendered valuable service to the Confederacy and that he did not desert. I remember his coming home from the army with a case of measels and giving them to the rest of the family." Witness my hand this 29 th day of January, 1925. Martha X Hairston (her mark) Sworn and subscribed to before me this 29th day of January 1925. signed: jeff T. Kemp, county judge, milam co. tx. pension file 40534 ---------- Jeff T. Kemp, county judge, Milam co. Cameron TX. feb 4, 1925 Hon.S.H. Terrell, Comp. Austin, TX. Dear Sir, ............ .................."In this case I tracked the law as provided in Article of 6270: I knew the old man, personally, and I discussed the matter with his neighbors and I also made a special trip to ROCKDALE, and secured an affidavit from his daughter, Mrs. Hairston, who remembers that her father was in the army and that he brought the measles home with him. I have no copy of this trip to Rockdale. I will say in this connection that I will not let one of these old people pay me one cent for my trouble. I make this recommendation in good conscience and while I know that you do not have to grant the pension upon same, still I hope that same will satisfy you and that you will grant it. Yours very truly, Jeff T. Kemp, county Judge --------------------------------------------------------------- the census of Walker co. tx. shows her age 1 in 1860 with probably birth year of 1859? For her to sign the papers for her step mother: mahala bankston williams dodd, she was of age: 66 by my subtraction in 1925.

    1. [TXMILAM] Hairston Family and allied lines
    2. This letter from Ed came last year and has good solid data on the Hairston family-although it does not answer the WALDEN question. From: (Edward Bregenzer) To: MEGBR549@aol.com Judy : The Hairstons first arrived in America about 1729 , there was the father called Peter 'the immigrant' Hairston and at least 4 sons, Andrew , Peter , Samuel and Robert . The were first in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, but only for a short time period, just long enough to get some land patents there and then they crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains into Virginia . They soon became some of the largest land and slave owners in Virginia . Samuel never married . Andrew and Robert married and most of Robert's family stayed in Virginia , except for one 'vagrant' that went to Mississippi and died there about 1852 or so. Andrew's children were mostly girls and the 2 sons he supposedly had I think died rather early and they never married. Some of the girls married and one of them married a man named Amyx and some of those offsprings came to Texas and Oklahoma. Peter, the other brother did marry and he went into South Carolina and it is from Peter that all the Texas Hairstons stem from, but more exactly most of them are from Richard Hairston. Now to the details about your James J. Hairston , As is usually the case those census birth records can be confusing , if not inaccurate , When I checked my data base I found that I had recorded 2 marriages for James J. Hairston and further I had your Martha's last name listed as "WALDEN" . We have James being married to Martha about 1871/1872 , as on the 1910 census they state that they were married for 39 years, which would make it about 1871/1872. It further stated that they had 9 children andin 1910 there were still 5 alive. The birth date for James J. Hairston we have as December 1845 and is probably accurate, as he would then be a son of Richard and CatherineGriffin Hairston . He would have been born in Texas , even though on onecensus it shows he was born in South Carolina [We attribute this to a'census taker error' , then census taker probably asked him where his father was born and South Carolina would have been correct] . Let me give you a couple census records . 1880 Texas - Milam County James Hairston - born 1848 South Carolina [This is the error] Martha - wife born 1857 Mississippi Ann - daug born 1868 Texas [Probably from first marriage of James or even Martha. On one of these census there is listed a lady name "WALDEN" as a mother-in-law]. Martha - daug born 1871 Texas[This also could be from a 1st marriage ofeither one] Richard - son born 1872 Texas Henry - son born 1876 Texas John - son born 1877 Texas 1900 Texas -0 Milam County Henry R. Hairston - born August 1875 texas Fannie [Dukes ?] - wife born August 1874 Texas Mattie K.[Kenton] - son born November 1894 Texas Fredonia A. - daug born December 1897 Texas-(martha l. DODD Hairston had a sister named Fordonia ) 1900 Texas - Milam County - City Of Rockdale J. J. Hairston - born December 1845 Texas [This is most likely right date] Martha - wife born Oct 1855 Mississippi [This also is probably correct] Martha - daug born August 1869 Texas [In 1910 she was a saleslady in a dress shop, she could have been from either marriage]. Minnie - daug born May 1882 Texas Susie - daug born April 1890 Texas Alma - daug born October 1894 Texas >From what I have gathered these male children were what was known as 'truck farmers' . In other words they would grow the produce and then truck it to Dallas to sell. It appears that the Dallas Hairstons came from this family. Several years ago I was in contact with them and a young man by the name of David Hairston [about 25 years old in 1995] wasin College Station Texas at the University there. Trust this doesn't confuse you, but I rather suspect that both James and Martha were married twice. Ed. Bregenzer/Fort Worth , Texas ---------------- Martha Louisa DODD Hairston was the daughter of James Riley DODD and Sarah CAVE of Choctaw Co. Alabama. Her aunt was Lucy(Louisa) ANN (CAVE )Rabon/DODD,Autry and her uncle was: Ashley Haywood DODD( 1815-1860). Her father married thee other women in Milam co. area from 1874 to his death in 1900. Martha Louisa DODD Hairston gave testimony to the county judge concerning her father's military service for the CSA and said that she well remembered him being in the army. When her father returned from war he gave the entire family the measles. Her step mother who was filing for the pension was Mahala Bankston WILLIAMS DODD and the last wife of James Riley DODD. When Martha Louisa DODD Hairston wed James J. Hairston, he was a widower. His first wife, Molly CAVE Hairston had died and Martha raised the stepchildren with her own. It is my belief that Sarah CAVE DODD (Martha's mother) and Henry CAVE (Martha's uncle?) and Lucy (louisa) ANN CAVE DODD (Martha's aunt) were all related in some way? We have not found how Sarah CAVE DODD relates to Henry and Lucy.(who were brother and sister). (1.) We are seeking descendants of Martha Louise Dodd and James J. Hairston. (2.) We are seeking a picture of Martha Louise DODD Hairston and her husband and children ,if possible, one exists?. AND if we put our hopes on luck? We would hope sincerely, that someone has a picture of old james riley dodd and his daughter martha louise dodd hairston-maybe together? (3.) We are seeking any story or legend of Martha (the mystery woman? grin). Thanks sincerely to all who help--and if this letter should make its way over to the Hairston Reunion in Milam co.? We offer a grateful Hug. judy hugg grimes and texas milam co. kin

    1. [TXMILAM] Meissner--Johnson family
    2. janemc
    3. I am looking for descendants of a Doctor Meissner and his wife Martha Johnson Meissner who lived in Milam County and perhaps Bell County back in the late 1800's and early 1900.s. Martha Elizabeth Johnson was born on Aug. 19, 1876 in Texas to Redden Hezekiah Johnson and Cecila Ann Fortenberry Miller Johnson. Cecila Ann ran the hotel in Buckholts for years and Redden had a blacksmith shop there. Martha's oldest brother, William Benjamin [Ben] Johnson was my great grandfather and he was married to Mary Susanna Salina "Mamie" Little whose family lived next door to the Johnson's in Milam County in the late 1800's. I was told that after Dr. Meissner died that Martha Meissner moved to Bridgeport, Texas or somewhere close to there. We found a marriage certificate for a Oscar Herman Meissner and a Martha Elizabeth Johnson in Milam County for Nov. 6, 1891 and they were married by M.G. Raney, Minister of the Gospel. If this is the same one as my Martha Meissner, I also found them in the 1900 census with their children listed as: 1. Elsie W. Meissner--born Dec. 1892 2. William A. Meissner--Sept. 1894 3. Lonie Meissner--born 1895 4. Caroline or Ceclise A. Meissner 5. Annie Meissner--born 1987 6. Max Meissner born Sept. 1899 7. Theodore Meissner--born 1903 8. Herman Meissner--born 1905 9. Liz Meissner --born 1907 10. Cecil Meissner-born 1909 11. George Meissner [I didn't find this in a census record but I know that she had a son by this name and they used to have Meissner family reunions in Bridgeport. Martha Johnson Meissner also had a sister name Mary Virginia Johnson called Mollie who married William Bud Pollock and then Frank Yaws after Bud died. They also had a brother named Francis Marion Johnson who was a druggist in Buckholts and he was called "Med". He was married to Maglene Rawls and they had three children, Elbert Johnson, Dennis Franklin Johnson and Marion Lovey Johnson who married Bardon Umphlett. After Maglene died, Marion took her back to North Carolina to bury her and he stayed up there and married a Rosa Jane Eure and had a daughter and son by her. I have corresponded with the son, Milam Johnson. There was another brother named Joseph L. Johnson who died at age 13 and he and my great grandfather, William Benjamin Johnson are buried side by side at the Bryant Station Cemetery. I would love to hear from someone in this family. thank you..... Jane Little McEndree janemc@airmail.net
