The victim is a promising young man, John Cole, a resident of Rockdale and lately a brakeman on the I. & G. N. railroad. Cole it seems, was attempting to board a freight train and missing his hold, was crushed beneath the wheels, severing his left arm near the shoulder and crushing his left leg below the knee. Owing to some delays that it seems could not be avoided, the patient lost a good deal of blood. Dr. Morrison and Dr. Markin of this place and Dr. Horton and Dr. Walker of Rockdale are in attendance, but up to 8 p.m., Cole was too weak from loss of blood to endure the amputation of his mangled limbs. There is little hope for his recovery. Galveston Daily News – Tues., 4 June 1878, p. 1, c. 4 Death - Rockdale, June 3 - The funeral of John B. Cole, killed by being run-over by a train at Hearne on Thursday, was largely attended and all stores were closed. No event has ever shocked this community more.

In trying to sort our the Henry W. Cave family in Milam, I have been following the Hairston messages.....and I am lost. Some say Martha Dodd Hairston (1855-1941) is dau of Sarah Cave who is d/o Henry W. Cave. I find twelve children for H.W. (no Sarah): John B., Martha, Nancy Elizabeth, Clark Uriah, Henry Wayne, Francis Marion, Lucy Ann, Mary Jane, Hiram David, Permelia (called Mellie), James Monroe, and Jefferson Davis. Seems the "Mollie Cave" stated as cousin of Martha Dodd would be Amelia "Molly" Cave possibly born abt 1848 Clarke Co. Miss. who married James J. Hairston. Appears her marriage is recorded to a J.J. Houston in Burleson Co Dec. 21, 1865. John B. Cave had another dau Louisa Ann who md Ashley Haywood Dodd and their son was Charles Madison Dodd. If Mollie & Martha are both nieces of Lucy (dau of Henry Cave), they would be cousins. But, maybe they were not? I am missing something? Galveston Daily News Sat., 9 March 1878, p. 4, c. 6 Rockdale Messenger - On Monday, Rockdale witnessed a strange phenomenon. It was a shower of leaves. As far as the eye could reach the heavens above were filled with them, resembling one of the days of the grasshoppers. There was no commotion of the atmosphere to be observed in any direction on the horizon. The supposition is that they were lifted up by an immense whirlwind and carried a great distance. They were falling all day long. Rockdale Messenger - The editor paid a flying visit to Davilla. As far as the eye could reach on every side could be seen new farms being opened and new houses being built. That section is fast becoming one of the most thickly settled in our county and that by a class of people who have been drawn there by the guarantees held out in the past course of its citizens, who are temperate and law abiding, and have built schools and churches. Davilla has three churches, a Methodist, Baptist, and Christian. Prof. Ragsdales school numbers 130 pupils. There are 51 in the male, 36 in the female and 43 in the primary departments. All grades are taught from the a-b-cs to the highest classics - Latin, Greek, Spanish and French. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Lynna Kay Shuffield P. O.
