He was born October 26, 1922, in Rockdale, Texas, to Jerome J, Dreher and Myrtle Rozell Dreher. He was a lifelong resident of Bay City, he was a renowned and avid fisherman, a retired paint contractor, a member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Shriners, and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Flossie Gentry Dreher of Bay City; by his daughter, Denise Gentry Phillips of Houston; by his son, Robert W. Gentry of Houston; by his sisters, Vera H. Robinson of Houston, Estelle Muston, Jeraldine J. Hosek, Peggy L. Hosek, Marilin Orsak and Johnnie Sue Roberts, all of Rockdale; and by his grandsons, Ryne Genty Christesen and Preston Russell Christesen of Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2002 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Veterans’ graveside honors will be provided by P.H. Parker VFW Post 2438 of Bay City. Pallbearers will be Charles Hahn, Chuck Hahn, Jerry West, Wayne Bruening, Pete Hale and George Clements, Jr. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Bay City.

Mary Scarborough Morgan - may have remarried in 1878 to J. H. Garner. She was a sister to Amelia C. Scarborough Norris above. Moved to Milam County Texas in the early 1870s from Butler Co AL with her large family of daughters.

Raised in Milano, she lived in Artesia, NM, for 41 years before moving back to Milano in 1986 where she resided for the past 16 years. She married Harry E. Finley on Dec. 20, 1947, in San Angelo. Mrs. Finley attended school at Southwest Texas Teacher College (now Southwest Texas State University) in San Marcos and also at New Mexico State and Colorado State universities. She taught school in Artesia, NM, from 1945 until her retirement in 1972. She taught in Abbo Elementary, the first completely underground school in the United States. She also taught in Liberty, Milano, Friendswood and Lexington. Mrs. Finley was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Carlsbad, NM, a life member of New Mexico PTA, and a member of the Lake Arthur No. 24 Order of the Easter Star in Artesia, NM. Preceding her in death were her husband, Harry E. Finley; three brothers, Dan, Carl and Walter Herbert Newman; and a sister, Ester Mae Newman. Survivors are two sisters, Mildred "Tootsie" Martin and husband U.W. "Bully" of Garrison, and Evelyn Watson of Chesapeake, VA; a sister-in-law, Martha F. She married Caleb Warner Lewis in Leesville, LA, on Sept. 28, 1935. Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rockdale. Preceding her in death were her husband and four sisters, Nellie Edwards, Evilina Edwards, Sweetie Lewis and Eva Parker. On August 20, 1950, he and Lavona Bargfrede were married at Flora, Missouri. Rev. Appel served in parish ministry for 52 years. His churches included Hope Lutheran in Dallas, St. Paul Lutheran in Thorndale, and Christ Lutheran in Noack. He and his wife, Lavona have lived in Thorn! dale since 1959. Rev. Appel loved the church. He found the preaching of the gospel and visiting the sick and homebound especially rewarding. His Grandpa Jacob was the pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church of West Taylor and Wuthrich Hill and his father Carl was pastor of Christ Lutheran in Noack. Rev. Appel enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends as well as following Texas sports. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Carl Appel. He is survived by his loving wife, Lavona Appel of Thorndale; sons, Rev. Paul Appel and wife, Sharon of Rowlett and Philip Appel and wife, Kim of Helotes; daughter, Becky Merkord and husband, Joey of Maryville, TN; sisters, Dorothy Appel of La Marque and Ruth Roos of Pearland; six grandchildren, Jenny Cutter and husband, Thomas, Joel Appel, Tim and Melissa Appel, and Sara and Scott Merkord. That photo of the gray mare and buggy is attached -- the driver is Josephine -- the other woman is unidentified at this time. Rockdale Messenger, Thur., 2 Nov 1899. Accident - Mrs. W. P. Henry who has lived on the Cameron road, 3-miles from Rockdale for over 20-years left her son’s home on the Dr. A. C. Isaacs farm, about 3-miles beyond her home, to come home and as was her habit, she pushed her buggy animal, a GRAY MARE that she has driven for several years, into a lope....
