(sic) Love assassinated in his office at the capitol in Austin. [very lengthy article] = = = = = Handbook of Texas On-Line LOVE, ROBERT MARSHALL (1847-1903). Robert Marshall Love, son of James M. and Theresa Evelyn (Braden) Love, was born in Franklin, Texas, on January 11, 1847, eleven years after his parents had arrived as pioneers in Texas. The family moved to Tehuacana, where he attended the common schools. At seventeen he gave up a short-lived teaching career to volunteer in the Confederate Army; he enlisted in Company G, Sixth Texas Cavalry, Ross's Brigade,qv in 1862 and served throughout the war. After the war he returned home and successfully farmed and raised livestock in Tehuacana. On January 12, 1870, in Hickman County, Kentucky, he married Lucy Townes Morgan. They had ten children. Love began his political career as deputy sheriff of Limestone County in 1872. He was sheriff of Limestone County, 1884-90; United States marshal for the Northern District of Texas, 1894-96; and state comptroller, 1901-03. He also was elected president of the Sheriff's Association of Texas from 1886 to 1894. Love and his brother John helped end Reconstructionqv in 1873, when they armed themselves with pistols and stood at the foot and head of the Capitolqv stairs to protect the members of the legislature who had been prohibited to convene by incumbent governor Edmund J. Davis.qv Richard Cokeqv had been elected governor, but Davis contested the election. The Love brothers enabled the Fourteenth Legislature to organize and administer the oath of office to Coke. Rumor states that John Love kicked Davis in the seat of the pants as he exited through the Capitol rotunda door. Love belonged to many organizations, including the Knights of Honor, the Knights of Pythias, and the Knights Templar. He was a leading member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He built a church on his own farm and devoted himself to the construction of many others around the state. In 1903, while serving as state comptroller, he was shot at his desk in the Capitol at Austin by W. G. Hill, a former employee of the department. His last words were, "I have no idea why he shot me. May the Lord bless him and forgive him. I cannot say more." He died several hours later in Austin and was buried at Tehuacana. 1. [TXMILAM] 1873 - Rockdale & the railroad
    2. Lynna Kay Shuffield
    3. Galveston Daily News – Sun., 12 Oct 1873, p. 4, c. 2 Miscellaneous - Milam Messenger: Oct. 8 - The International railroad bridge across the Brazos was swept away by the late flood. We understand there is a construction train on this side, together with a considerable supply of material for track laying and the company will, for the present at least, suff no serious inconvenience. The overflow of Little river, last week, was a great calamity to those who were so unfortunate as to have crops in low localities. Galveston Daily News – Sat., 1 Nov 1873, p. 1, c. 4 Miscellaneous - Milam Messenger, Oct. 29: We were happy to meet in our town yesterday, Col. Burnett, who says that the bridge across the Brazos will be rebuilt and trains running over the International in less time than a week. It will then be but a little while until th road is completed to Rockdale, the resent terminus. We expect to see, within the next 60-days, a flourishing railroad town at Rockdale, where an immense lumber trade will be carried on, together with the great variety of other business that they wants and resources of this country demand. Galveston Daily News – Sat., 22 Nov 1873, p. 1, c. 3 & 4 Miscellaneous - The grading on the International Railroad is completed to Rockdale, 30-miles westward from Hearne and it is confidently believed that trains will be running to that place by December 1st. Rockdale is in Milam county, 50-miles from Austin. Galveston Daily News – Sun., 23 Nov 1873, p. 4, c. 4 Miscellaneous - Milam Messenger, Nov. 19 - W. L. Lutner, now a resident of our embryo city, Rockdale, informs us that the place is building up rapidly. The bridge across the Brazos was to have been finished Saturday, but wh have as yet no positive assurance that it was completed. The company is anxious for the road to reach Rockdale at an early day and are using every exertion to effect that much desired object. Galveston Daily News – Tues., 4 Dec 1873, p. 4, c. 2 Miscellaneous - Milam Messenger, Nov. 26 - We paid a flying visit to Rockdale last week and was proud to see so much animation and enterprise among its citizens; houses are springing up as if by magic, and already the place is attracting a good local trade. Great difficulty is experienced in procuring lumber which has much retarded the growth of the town. Scores of buildings would not have been completed had material been plentiful. The repeated accidents to the Brazos bridge has, of course, seriously affected Rockdale, but it is to be hoped that the company have experienced such lessons in the past as will enable it to avoid these unfortunate catastrophes in the future, and that a permanent bridge will be speedily completed. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Lynna Kay Shuffield P. It would be quicker and easier for us to exchange information that way. You have some children listed in the 1880 census that I do not have and vice versa. Perhaps some of them are listed by middle or nicknames and some of mine were born after the 1880 census. No, I do not know the names of James White's parents. So many unanswered questions. Are you researching the White line as your main focus or the Henderson line? I have a lot on the Henderson line but little on the Whites. I live in Willacy County, Texas. Where do you live? M. Williams. On last Saturday night, Deputy Sheriff Green, with a small party went out in the vicinity of the residence of Boyles, for the purpose of obtaining some clue to the whereabouts of the murderers of the lamented Williams. Soon after Sheriff Mitchuson left with another party for the same purpose, but did not know the precise locality of Green’s party. The last party was making their way through the woods, Ben Traynham in advance, who was halted by W. Smith, one of Green’s party. Traynham responded, “friends and sheriff’s party,” but unfortunately Smith did not comprehend him, seeing with Traynham squatted and cocked his gun and demanded of Smith who is was. At this juncture Smith fired and Traynham fell. Happily for all, the gun was loaded with duck shot, otherwise the consequences would have proven fa! tal. As it is, Traynham is painfully, though not dangerously, shot He is doing well, and with no doubt be up in a few days.
