T. H. Begely died in this city on Wednesday, October 13 in his 76th year. He has been a minister of the Baptist domination for forth-two years and for all that time had preached the gospel in Milam, Burleson and adjoining counties. He was one of the pioneer preachers of the county, having settled here in 1848, when the buffalo were plentiful here as jackrabbits are now. He was widely known throughout central Texas sterling qualities and his uncompromising religious faith. There was never a time in his ministry that he would not have gone to the stake rather than compromise one tenet of his faith. He was an ex-confederate soldier, having served thought that war in Greene’s brigade. After the war ended he with a colony of others went to Brazil to escape the reconstruction regime of the federal government. He was not pleased with that country and returned to his old home in Milam county at the end of four years. He leaves a widow and one son and his adopted daughter, Mrs. J. M. Alexander, lives in Rockdale.

At 2 o’clock in the afternoon the motion was heard and on application of the defendant a change of venue was granted by Judge Taliaferro to McLennan county. In June 1892, there lived a country maiden, Miss Mollie White on the banks of the San Gabriel River, in this county, and on a beautiful moonlight night in that month, while she slept peacefully in her country home, some one slipped to her room about midnight and with one incision with a knife, near the middle of her throat, murdered her. She struggled to her father’s room, for there was a connecting door between the two rooms, called one time, fell gasping, and expired. The news of this crime spread like wildfire and the neighbors gathered to administer to the bereaved and pay their last tribute of respect to the dead. Parties scoured the whole country in search of the perpetrator, but to no avail. The defendant was suspected and arrested and so strong was the public sentiment in that community against him that it was only by the vigilance of the officials that he escaped being lynched. But the cooler heads controlled and the law was allowed to take its course, and at two former trials the defendant has been found guilty and given the penalty of life imprisonment. But the judgments have been reversed by the court of criminal appeals, and he now stands for another trial. = = = = Dallas Morning News, 30 May 1898, p. 5 Dallas, Dallas County, Texas “Jim Bob Crow Case on Trial” Waco, Tex., 29 May – In Judge Sam R. Scott’s court the case of the state vs. Jim Bob Crow is on trial. It is a case, which was moved on a change of venue from Milam to McLennon County. The defendant is charged with killing Miss Mollie White on July 10, 1892, on the San Gabriel, about 20 miles from Cameron. The young lady was slain in her room in the night. Her father, B. F. White and his three sons are attending the trial. It is a very interesting case. This is the fifth trial of the defendant. There are many witnesses to examine and it is likely that the trial will last several days. = = = = = Dallas Morning News, 15 Sept 1898, p. 4 Dallas, Dallas County, Texas “Witnesses Complain Because They May Have to Go to Another County” Cameron, Tex., 13 Sept. – The case of the state vs. Jim Bob Crow, which was carried from Milam to McLennon county on a change of venue, has been set for the 22nd of September. Judge Sam Scott refused to permit the issuance of further process, holding that the witnesses were under the court of this, the twentieth judicial district, and were bound to follow the case wherever it goes. This ruling caused some complain among the witnesses, many of whom are ill able to pay railroad fare to Waco. Crow is on trial the third time for the alleged time for the alleged murder of Miss Mollie White on the San Gabriel River in this county in June 1892.
