A SHIREY BENJAMIN ROYCE SHIREY died on 12 April 2004 at Houston's Plaza Specialty Hospital, his family at his side, after an extraordinary year fighting to recover from cancer and multiple medical complications. Ben was born on 21 September 1924 in Blackwell, TX to Abram and Elizabeth (Montgomery) Shirey, and had six siblings. His family farmed in East Texas, struggling through the untimely deaths of his parents during the Great Depression. Upon graduating from Milano High School in 1943, Ben served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He fought on Omaha Beach during the D-Day Invasion at Normandy, France; and in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He completed his military service as a chaplain's assistant. Ben was married to Naomi Hull on 27 April 1957 in Fort Worth, TX by his brother, William. The couple lived in Houston for 45 years, and then relocated to Tucson, AZ. Their son, Cleve Royce Shirey, was born in Houston in 1962. Ben worked as an accountant, retiring in 1987 after 20 years as the inventory control accountant for the Houston I.S.D. Ben was a deep and quietly spiritual man. His role as an active founding member of The Foundry UMC (Houston), where he served extensively, was one of his proudest experiences. Most recently, he was a member of Christ Church UMC in Tucson, AZ. A tall man with a dry wit, ready smile, and gracious manner, he was known for his honesty, integrity, and compassion. Ben took pride in his appearance and conducted himself as an unpretentious gentleman throughout his life. He was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Naomi, and encouraged her to pursue her own career as an educator. He was a loving and compassionate father to his son Cleve, providing him lifelong support and guidance. Ben is survived by his wife, Naomi Hull Shirey; and his son, Cleve Royce Shirey, MD of Anchorage, AK. Also surviving him are his sister, Lottie (Shirey) Moseley of San Marcos, TX; brother, the Rev. William "Bill" Shirey of Fort Worth, TX; numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and -nephews. Naomi and Cleve thank the healthcare professionals and the professional and lay clergy of various faiths who provided care to Ben at both MD Anderson Cancer Center and Plaza Specialty Hospital. The Shirey family especially thanks their beloved friend, Doris Lantz, who has provided unbounded love and support to them in so many ways this past year. Visitation begins at 11:30 AM, with a memorial service at 1:00 PM on Monday 19 April 2004 at Forest Park-Westheimer in Houston; the Rev. Godfrey Hubert officiating. A ODOM On Sunday evening, April 18, 2004, LONNIE FAYE ODOM, affectionately known as Granny, answered Heaven's call. She departed this earth surrounded by the love and support of her children, grandchildren and extended family and friends and landed safely in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Lonnie Faye Williams was one of 12 children born to the Rev. John and Mattie Williams on February 22, 1919. She was raised in Milano, Texas and attended Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas, where she lettered in varsity debate (is that where we get our arguing skills from?). She married Harold Odom on September 6, 1940. She had a passion for teaching and taught at various levels over the years before retiring from the Ft. Worth Independent School District in the 1970s. During that era, she was also founding member of the Fort Worth Chapter of Jack and Jill, a member of the Maids and Matrons Club and the Ethel Ransom Social Club. After cracking the code to a racially discriminatory testing system, she worked with a group of others to help break down barriers by becoming the first Black postal workers hired in Tarrant County. Granny was an extremely creative seamstress, milliner and florist, operating Odom's Floral Shop with her husband Harold in Fort Worth for many years. Her designs, hats and floral arrangements were a hit in the community. Her other passion was music. She had a voice like an angel and sang in her church choir and at many other concerts and musicals. One of the highlights of her music career was the annual musical at Baker Chapel AME which she participated in as a soloist and a choir member until her health begin to fail. Her beloved husband Harold A. Odom Sr., nine of her siblings and both parents preceded her in death. To mourn her passing, she leaves her siblings Gloria Gray, John Williams and wife Mildred; beloved in-laws S.T. Odom, Oletha Woods, James Odom, Arzela Cole, Larutha Clay and husband Matthew, Elzie Odom and wife Ruby; special aunt, Arvetta Cooper, sons Harold Jr. and wife Pat, Donald and wife Rose, Ronald and wife Doris; grandchildren, Al and wife Kim, Robin Owens and husband Hawkins III, Ronald, Jr., Donald, Jr. and wife Erica, Eric, Andrea Campbell and husband Donovan, Kevin and Allison. The Family wishes to thank Trina Carter for her loyal devotion and patience while providing care for Granny. The Family wishes to especially thank Catherine Morrow, for extending Granny's life exponentially and being an extension of our family. You have done more than words can ever express as you loved and cared for Granny so unselflessly. We are forever in your debt.

State Trooper David Yarbrough said a 1995 Mitsubishi driven by Jennie Tena, 31, was westbound when it veered off the right side of the road, struck a guard rail, and rolled into Walkers Creek, landing upside down. Tena and her passenger, Aaron Aguillon, 28, were pronounced dead at the scene at 5:36 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Chip Dunsmoor. Yarbrough said both were residents of CR 265 in the Maysfield-Branchville area. Yarbrough said Tena was wearing a seat belt and Aguillon was not. The Cameron VFD responded to the scene. = = = = = Cameron Herald, Thur., 12 May 2005 Two dead in accident near Maysfield by MIKE PECK, Managing Editor Two Maysfield area residents died late Monday afternoon when their automobile left FM 485 and plunged upside down into Walker's Creek about two and one-half miles east of US 77. Jennie Tena, 31, the driver of the 1995 Mitsubishi Galant, and the owner of the car, Aaron Aguilllon, 28, were pronounced dead at the scene of the 4:35 p.m. crash. Milam County Precinct 1 Peace Justice O.C. "Chip" Dunsmoor, conducted an inquest and ordered that autopsies be performed on both occupants of the car. The bodies were transported to the Travis County Medical Examiners office in Austin. Dunsmoor said late Tuesday that preliminary autopsy results from the Travis County Medical Examiners office indicate that Tena and Aguillon died of drowning after their auto overturned in the creek. Milam County Department of Public Safety Trooper David Yarbrough said the Mitsubishi was westbound on FM 485 when its right front quarter panel made contact with the bridge railing. "It appears the car traveled up the guardrail, hit the bridge with its left front end and then rolled over to the right and came to rest upside down in the creek," Yarbrough said. Yarbrough said Tena was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash and Aguillon was not. Tena was pulled from the wrecked auto by a resident of the area who heard the crash and went to investigate. The resident tried unsuccessfully to locate another passenger in the auto. Aguillon was discovered in the wreckage after emergency crews were able to right the auto. Yarbrough said family members indicated that Aguillon had arrived home from work and the couple was enroute to town when the crash occurred. Emergency medical personnel worked to try and revive both victims. Two emergency services helicopters also made landings at the accident scene, one on FM 485 and another in an adjacent field. However, both were waved off of the scene shortly after landing. Yarbrough said authorities have not determined what caused the car to strike the bridge rail.
