Baskin was born Nov. 29, 1926 in Cameron to James Dollar Baskin Sr. and Ruth McKinney Baskin. He received his elementary education in Cameron and attended junior high and high school in Austin. He received a bachelor of arts from the University of Texas in 1948, his J.D. in 1950 and his master of arts in government in 1953. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946 and was a U.S. Army Lieutenant from 1951-1953. He married Joan Marie Ragsdale June 25, 1952. Baskin was active in numerous community groups, including Midland ISD's Academic Programs and a lifetime member of the Parent Teacher Association. He served as a municipal court judge from 1953-1958 and a state district court judge for 12 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Judge Jim Baskin Jr. of San Antonio. He is survived by his wife, Joan Baskin of Midland; children, Becky Ferguson of Midland; Bo Baskin of Austin; Steven Baskin of Marble Falls and JJ Baskin of Austin; grandchildren, A. Graveside services were held Saturday, May 28, 2005, at Sharp Cemetery in Rockdale. Mr. Garner died Wednesday, May 25. He was born Dec. 2, 1937, in Milam County to Hicks and Bessie (Williams) Garner. Mr. Garner was a graduate of Sharp High School, received his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech University and his law degree from Baylor University School of Law. He began his 45 years of practicing law in Lubbock and in 1977 he moved to Amarillo. Mr. Garner was a partner of Whittenburg, Whittenburg, Garner & Stein at the time of his death. He was certified as a civil trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and certified in civil trial and personal injury law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. In December 2003, he was honored by the Panhandle Trial Lawyers Association as its first recipient of the Temple Houston Award in recognition of his skills and successes as a trial lawyer. Survivors are his wife, Carolyn Walden Garner; a son, Robert Kyle Garner of Amarillo; three daughters, Synde Garner and Ronald Matschek of Amarillo, Jan Garner Tankersley of Lubbock, Jennifer Garner and Tim Nicholson of Amarillo; eight grandchildren, Carter, Kelsey, Camron and Casen Matschek, Avrey and Allye Tankersley, Dolan and Margaret Nicholson; five sisters, Mildred Holcomb of Lubbock, Bonnie and Clayton Dark of Lufkin, Helen and Henry Abel of Buckholts, Martha and Dan Garth of Lubbock, Beverly and Norman Key of Austin. For some reason I did not receive a notice when you replied and I just now found your response. I will continue to try to solve this puzzle. According to some sources online (?) it was James' younger brother, David William, who married a Kavanaugh and had a daughter named Ella. What I do know is that a James F. Arnett, born 1831 in MS, married in 1859 to a widow, Nancy Parsons, who had 2 children, Hugh and Sarah(Sally). They are listed in the Milam Co. census 1860. In 1880, Nancy was widowed and living with her son, William Hugh Parsons. I am trying to see if the two James F. Arnett's are one in the same. Thank you, Toni

The family story is that Luther entered a poetry contest and won a wedding at the fair (Rockdale?). They were given their wedding outfits and furniture to start housekeeping. Does anyone know where I could find more information on this and especially get a copy of the poem?

Frank Hubert, 89, died at his home at Minerva, seven miles north of Rockdale, Monday. Funeral services will be held at Minerva Tuesday. Hubert was one of the few surviving early day settlers of Rockdale. He was born at Nacogdoches, but came as a young man to this section of Milam County and soon after the founding of Rockdale, he opened a hardware and saddle business. He was the last surviving member of the old Rockdale Social Club, organized by a group of bachelors in 1874, the year Rockdale was established. Hubert married Miss Minerva May Sanders, whose grandfather came to Milam County in 1853 and for whom the town of Minerva was named. He had engaged in the farming industry at Minerva for many years and was known for his fine grape vineyards. He is survived by his wife, five children, Dr. J. S. Hubert of Cameron, Mrs. C. W. McBurnett of Dallas, Mrs. David Robertson and Ralph and Frank Hubert of Minerva, and one sister, Mrs. John S. Bonner of Rockdale.
