    3. That's very interesting, David. I would have assumed a case of illegitimacy, as well. We appreciate your willingness to share your findings with the rest of us! Jayna Quinn -----Original Message----- From: David Strickland [mailto:dstrickland@optekinc.com] Sent: Friday, June 23, 2000 11:24 AM To: TXMIDLAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TXMIDLAN] Texas birth records 1926-1949 on Rootsweb I ran into an instance where the father was identified as ***DO NOT ISSUE***. I then checked for that name for the father and found 21,585 such records. I could not believe that there were that many "protected" unwed fathers, so I contacted the Texas State Dept of Health for an explanation. It seems that when a person dies and the Department can identify his birth certificate, they change the father's name to ***DO NOT ISSUE*** as an internal code to not issue a certified copy of that birth certificate to anyone claiming to be the deceased person! Obviously they are not catching very many death/birth relationships as I only found 1 out of the 100 or so deceased people I have checked. Anyway, thought all the listers might "enjoy" another instance of the bureaucratic mentality of dealing with a legitimate issue. 3. In response to a request of availability of Cemetery Records for Midland Co., I checked them out and at the same time looked for Gowl, which had an inquiry previously. I found the following: James Vance Gowl, born iin Edgar Co. IL, July 29, 1872, died in Midland , TX Oct. 17, 1940, buried in Fairview Cemetery. There probably will be an obit for this date. No other Gowls were listed. As to Cemetery Books, the following are published: Cemetery Records of Fairview Cemetery in Midland, Midland Co. TX Vol I 1885-1989 Compiled by Juanita Butler Hancock Cemetery Records of Resthaven Memorial Park of Midland Co. TX Vol II 1949-1990 Compiled by Juanita Butler Hancock Record of Midland County TX Confederate Air Force Museum American Airpower Heritage museum Records of North Resthaven Cemetery & Mausoleum Greenwood Baptist Church and Cemetery Marriage Index (1885-1940) Midland Co. TX Vol III 1856-1994 Compiled by Juanita Butler Hancock Inside the cover, is a notice that the books can be ordered from: Mrs. Juanita Hancock P.O. Box 3822 Midland, TX 79702 or Mrs. Cindy Lou Hill 3360 Big Flat Rd. #17 Missoula, Montana 59801 One of our members thought that Juanita may have died. I could not find a phone number to call. Hope this helps, Dave Miller

Midland leased it's Sloan Field to the War Department for a dollar a year in June 1941. The article states: "Midland's old Sloan Field gave way to Midland Army Air Field (MAAF), site of the "world's greatest bombardier college" and home of the "Hell-from-Heaven Men." The first class graduated on April 30, 1942. Midland ended up with the "number-one bombardier school in the country." The article does not mention anything about paratroopers, but there very easily could have had some. My dad and uncle entered the service at MAAF, and neither of them flew. Another interesting tidbit - "All-told, more than 6,600 MAAF bombardier cadets dropped 1.2 million practice bombs from twin-engine Beechcraft AT-11 aircraft, armed with Norden bombsights, over targets etched in the West Texas plains." 3. My dad, Harry Strickland, worked for Humble (now Exxon Oil) from 1946 until his retirement in 1979. Needless to say, we moved around quite a bit as he was first a civil engineer, then a petroleum engineer. We lived in Midland 3 different times. In 1947 for a bout a year on South Mineola Street, now in a rundown section of town, in 1953-1955 on North Main Street near Crockett Elementary, now a vacant lot, then from 1957 thru 1967 on West Lousiana. I graduated from R E Lee HS in 1965, that being the first class to attend Lee all 4 years, 9th thru 12th. I have many fond memories of the people of Midland and the good school system, but not of the climate! I have no relations left in Midland and seldom get to visit anymore, but do think of it on occasions.

My grandfather,Russell Gowl Swiger, lived in Midland for several years, not sure how many. This James Vance Gowl was born in the county just above the one my grandfather was born in,so,James could be Russells father-in-law. I really have no ties to Midland now as my grandfather had moved to Burleson and died in 1971. Here is a question not tied directly to genealogy but could you tell me if there was an Army Airbase in Midland during wwll and if they did any paratrooper training there? I am not completly alien to the area,I lived in Odessa until I was nine years old. Thanks to the list once again. 3. Homer, we do not have the staff to do basic research, however we can do lookups through our GenWeb page. Ann Auburg is a librarian and a very competent genealogist. I would recommend that you contact her. Also, I recommend that you post a query on the GenWeb page at www.rootsweb.com/~txmidlan/ and also on our GenConnect page at http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/TX/Midland/ Our obit file does not go back as far as you are interested. I have checked the 1920 census and do not find a Gowl listed. Maybe one of the eight subscribers can help you. Also, looked at out funeral home records on line and did not find her. Good luck Dave Miller

    2. Well Dave now that you bring it up I will ask you if you do look ups out there? I have a funeral notice for a Mrs. Mary Ellen Gowl that died Aug. 20 1923. Is there any way you could find out who she is for me? If you find an obit that may list her next of kin or tells who attended the funeral may give a lead.My grandfather,Russell Gowl Swiger lived in Midland about that time so I figure it must be some relation to him because of the Gowl name. I know wher he was born and where he died but I know nothing of his parents and so on.It is hard to imagine that a place the size of Midland only has 8 people on its list. Thanks in advance Dave. 2. Hello to all 8 of you, I actually have all of the information I need on my lines - NANCE & TIDWELL and their descendants, and joined the list to try to be of assistance to anyone having questions about Midland, and to just keep an eye on the queries. I am a native Midlander. My grandfather moved here in 1907 and our family has been here ever since, except for a few years between 1920-1935, then they came back. If there is anything I can help you with, please let me know. Kay Nance Linn

    3. Hi, Listers, I am David Miller and it is my duty to get some activity going. I live in Midland TX and am a member of the Midland Genealogical Society, which is maintaining this list. You may want to vist another page that we sponsor - the USGenWeb page. I t can be accessed at - http://www.rootsweb.com/~txmidlan/ The society maintains a lookup person, which can be reached from that page plus there is a lot of information about services that are available to genealogists in Midland. There are only four of you subscribed to this list so you should get personalized attention. Please post the surnames you are researching to: TXMIDLAN-L@rootsweb.com Also, I have all of Midland Co. census records on my computer, so if you need that information, just ask. I had better hear FOUR postings or I am going to come looking for you <G>. Dave Miller dgm@iglobal.net
