    3. Along the tops of pages and along the outer margin are advertisements. Some are ordinary like Nash Robinson & Co adv. lumber, hardware, wall paper, and paint. Then you get those that seem to be 'working' like... Insist on Clifton's "Shade-Better" Brand Awnings * Porch Curtains * Venetian Blinds - Quality Insures Satsifaction * Clifton Mfg. Co. Phones 1700 and 1701 Above is an illustration, b&w, of a window with a stripped awning and below is a window with venetian blinds and drapes. There were catchy advertising slogans and claims then as now. Of course the media was just radio and print. Think of it, in 20-50 or so years someone will email and ask what was left on the corner and right on the price in Waco. For those that don't live here, it's Kirkpatrick and Witt Furniture. And it get's annoying after a few airings. Catchy. Unforgettable, nonetheless. Keep in mind that what I say about each is from the ad..only some of you can know if any of the claims were true or not. '39 was waaaaaaaaaay before my time! Do you remember... Cooper's Best Coffee, Steel cut or Drip Grind..."Quality Tells" Or the slogan from Reed's Florist, "Flowers from Reed's Always Please", ph. 321 and I do believe they still can be found at 1025 Austin!! to Use I.E.S. Lamps for your eyes' sake- Better light-Better sight Shop Where Electrical Things Are Sold Texas Power and Light Company, Waco shopping R.T. Dennis & Co., Inc. Furniture, Crockery, Stoves, Floor Coverings 426-428 Austin Telephone 4100 that Dr. Joel R. Chance, D.C., PH. C., also would treat you on evenings and Sundays by appointment?? And still is, but not at 220-31 N. 5th but out at Loop 340!! that "From Foundation to Chimney Top", you could get all kinds of building materials from Pennington Lumber Co., Val Pennington, 2211 Circle Drive Phone 7261 that Stratton-Stricker had 'furniture for everybody' that Monnig's was ' the friendly store' and the home of 'the town club hat' {what was that? a sandwich?} that Johnny Neumann offered a budget plan and complete "One-Stop Service", he served up Mobilgas and offered road service, too. 901 N. 25 Ph 955 that Ed Baurele was "the busy jeweler" and his ad is illustrated (b&w) up top with a pocket watch and a shining diamond at the bottom that Howell Radio Co. sold R C A tubes and Motorola Radios for your auto and home, that they had 12 yrs. of experience in service of all makes...oh, and the ad also warns us that "worn radio tubes ruin reception" that "The Progress Way Pleases" The Progress Laundry... Launderes, Dry Cleaners, Dyers, Fur Storage 1619-29 Franklin Ave. Phone 1300 that F. B. Jones Printing had of Character ..this directory is a product of our plant 707 Washington Phone 768 that you were to drink Royal Crown Cola "Because It's Good" Nehi-Royal Crown Bottling Co. Ph 858 that Burdette's Radio and Sound Service had the highest quality equipment and that "We Go Anywhere Anytime" 1007 North 9th St. Ph 1987 that Abe Therrell Cycle Co. had the "Best Equipped Shop in Waco" and Therrel offered auto loans, re-financing with "10-Minute Service" 608 Washington Ph 4124 when it was just F.M. Bolger-Haney...Dedicated to the Service of Others... Friendly, Understanding, Home-Like Service Columbus at 8th to drink Aerl's bottle milk which was proclaimed to sanitary, and having an airtight dacrocap to ask your grocer for Aerl's Grade "A" Pasteurized Sweet Milk..Butter, Milk...Cream, Cottage Cheese...Sweet Cream Butter...oh, yeah! and Ice Cream that Ray Rowell Furniture Co, Est. 1898, had Big Stock, Better Prices, Easy Terms..."Walk a Block and Save a Dollar" 305-307 Washington that "If It's Sporting Goods, The Holt Co. Do you remember... that C.H. Ruebeck Co. had everything in the building material line except lumber that United Tile Company had everything in tile the two-fold purpose of the "Pioneer" is to promote habits of thrift and to lend money to worthy people to acquire homes...the ad proclaims resources over one million five hundred thousand dollars Pioneer Building & Loan Association 706 Austin Ave The Hub Clothiers 418 Austin Ave.....and they are still there I think!! that Goldstein-Miguel had quality merchadise at lower prices... "Shopping Here Make Shopping Elsewhere Expensive" "Where Full Satisfaction Follows Every Transaction" "Waco's Greatest Department Store" Sixth and Austin {now..on Bosque Blvd., all that remains of Lake Air Mall..and the name is due to change} that Wood Bros was Central Texas' Largest Exclusive Men's Store {until a wild wind blew thru} that Williams Drug Company were the "Friendly Stores" 501 Franklin Ave. (Professional Building) Store No. 2- 9th and Austin Ave. that Southwestern Drug Corporation were wholesalers for the retail druggists of the southwest that to cook electrically was the modern method..it was economical..cool..the ad asks you to join the thousands of housewives who are enjoying this modern method of cooking...from Texas Power & Light Co. to say it with flowers from Reed's Flowers that Bolger-Haney, Waco's newest Funeral Home, had connections in all cities and were prepared to take care of every detail...and there was no parking worries at a Bolger-Haney Service...Private Parking Lot...Drive In when Wilkirson & Hatch had no Bailey...then as now at 1124-26 Washington Ave {Hatch Bailey added the Bailey name several years ago and they have a second location on Bosque Blvd. that opened in 2002} that, as of 1939, R.T. Dennis had 52 years of dependable service that is paid to shop at Piggly Wiggly...
