    1. The street guide for Waco 1939
    2. Teresa Parrish
    3. I sat down and perused this. It not only gives the street but directional infor and intersections. For instance... 1st N- From 100 Bridge av north beyond Jefferson av (not open between Washington and Jefferson al) Then it lists all those who live in that area. :c O Wow!! I am still figuring out how to read this. Some of the streets I have come across I have never heard of. Like Canal. The above example goes on.. after 118 N 1st is another note about it not being open between Washington and Jefferson al and then says Jefferson Al begins (al meaning alley) Jefferson av intersects... 1st S -from 100 Bridge av S beyond city limits (not open between Grant and Border) at 105 is the Chisholm Hide Co {no wonder, the Chisholm trail used to take cattle across the river on the suspension bridge} Bankers Al begins, Franklin av intersects.. Now I am totally lost, I have no sense of N, S, E, W...just tell me at what landmark to turn... :c) .... I recollect hearing of Banker's Alley in stuff on the '53 Tornado, it apparantly must have been near the Square...right?? Oh, I get it! Mary av intersects, STL SW railway crosses, Jackson intersects... I know where I am!! I think. Mary and Jackson are still active, the tracks on Jackson I think are dead and the ones on Mary still active or it's vicey-versy...and there is a huge block, where a Courtyard Mariott now sits in addition to the convention center parking lot and the tennis courts, that would have split 1st street (at one time this was called The Reservation, part of it, and it was when Waco legaized prositution and it was where they lived and worked). But I have to wonder, the numbered streets currently go as far as 3d...so 2d and 1st must have fallen to progress because I am thinking where they should be is where our city hall is and convention center and new Heritagae Square..in the area of the Square which the tornado obliterated. Oh, there are surely bits and pieces of 1st and 2d, but not downtown... Ah!! I can't get over the alley's being named. You have, say Clay av and Clay al, Ross av and Ross al....hhhmmm. Past Ross a Alabama av ended...I never knew we had such a street...likewise with Jones and Ahhhh!! Canal ends!! As you con't on on 1st S you intersect with Walnut Plaza and Walnut av, Lee ends, Johnson ends, Grant ends (not open between Grant and Border), Border ends, Leila intersects...boy, I need to get a current map and see what happened to those streets...progress or renaming..who knows?? Whoa!! the last street to intersect 1st S is Bosque!!?? and there is the city limits... That is where Texas Textile Mills Inc and Waco Cotton Mills were located. Then it goes to 2d S-from 126 Bridge av south beyond city limits and moves S..at least that is what I gather.. Past the intersection of 2d and Cottonwood, which I think I know where it is (near Baylor?), after Bosque intersects with 2d, then Lowell and Lasalle ea intersect with 2d..now how on earth do you pass Bosque before you get to Lasalle. It sure don't happen now!! Was there another Bosque? Then it goes to 3d S-from 300 Austin av to city limits... This is neat-o! I note at least one name change so far...Tilley al became 3d St Alley it run from Speight av south 1 blk, 1 west of S 3d... I recognize some streets and where they are, but streets they intersect then floor me. Of course, ya'll know Waco is laid out backwards. They thot the Brazos run north and south..hence while you are traveling either direction on a N & S freeway (I-35) you go under SOUTH Valley Mills drive. On same said freeway, travelling North, say, East Waco should be to your right..uh-huh, it is more left, on the WEST side of '35. Going south you'd expect to run thru South Waco, nope!! it's mostly to your right...WEST of the interstate.. eee-gads!! I heard tale one time, in the 70s a construction company from out-of-town gave up the contract for hiway work because they couldn't find anything..kept getting lost!! Hey, Waco Dr./Bellmead Dr./Hwy. 84 runs almost parellel to '35 in Waco and Bellmead, yet is marked as E and W.. ;c) Now that I have thoroughly confused you, I'll quit so you can take an aspirin.
