Add orange juice, orange peel, and vanilla. Stir in flour sifted with salt and soda. Add oats, chopped dates and nuts. Drop from tsp. onto greased cooky sheet. Bake in 375 degree oven 12 to 15 minutes. Makes about 4 dozen. -Evelyn Childers pg 41 Scotch Fruit Bars 1 1/4 cups flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1 cup quick cooking oats 1/2 cup shortening 3/4 cup brown sugar 1 1/2 cups moist mince meat Sift flour, measure; add oats, sugar, salt, mix well. Cut in shortening with fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Spread half the crumb mixture evenly over bottom of greased square pan 8x8x2 inches. Spread with mince meat, then with remaining crumbs. Press down lightly with back of spoon. Dip a spatula in milk and spread lightly over crumbs. Bake 30 minutes in hot oven. Cool, cut in bars. Mix well. Shape in small balls; place on ungreased cooky sheet. Bake in hot oven 400 degrees about 10 minutes. Roll in powdered sugar while still warm. Store overnight before serving.
