    1. Re: Mart Schools and Superintendant Allen

    3. I've been thinking about Professor Allen today and have to say more about him. He was such an inspirational teacher that when my grandmother, Mamie Dew/Hunter was in her 80s she was still talking about him. As a result of his teaching and inspiration my grandmother became a teacher and inspired many students including my brother and me. After my mother was born, her mother, Mamie Hunter reduced her teaching responsibilities to teaching piano lessons. I have no trouble surmising that Mamie was inspirational in the classroom because of her gentle way of teaching me piano. While in her eighties she still had the patience and knowledge to tutor me in English and geometry. (Can you imagine!) Mamie taught her taught her daughter how to play piano, but she did not have her in a regular classroom setting. Mother always said she didn't take well to school, but then both of her children did. First, my brother started teaching in the late 1950s in a university setting. He taught for many years and was known throughout the South for his inspirational teaching as well as his prolific writing in the fields of literature, politics, and history. I taught hundreds of students over a period of 29 years, and many of my students are now teaching others. This just goes to show the influence of Professor Allen. Hats off to you Professor Allen! Thank you for teaching in Mart and not being a mediocre educator. I forgot to ad that Eddie and Joe Hunter were brothers at the school, and my grandmother married Edward Lawrence Hunter. Could have been my grandpa. Rosemary Bradford Grant daughter of Ruby Hunter/Bradford sister of Dr. M.E. 2. Ann Avery Hunter
    3. If marriage records for McLennan Co. are accessible to the public for this time period, could someone check for a marriage for the following: Florence THOMSON/THOMPSON & Silas A. MCGHEE Silas McGhee, age 24 and his wife Florence, age 18, were living in Waco with her mother, Virginia THOMSON/THOMPSON in the 1920 census. Florence was also in Waco with her mother in 1910, so I'm assuming that's where she was married. I am mainly interested in learning who was listed as her father on the marriage record. Thanks very much for any help. Ann -- Ann Avery Hunter Richmond, Virginia mailto:annh@erols.com

His father was Manuel Reyes and Mother Paulina Sanchez Castellano. I have their marriage record from The county of Mclennan. They were married in the city of Waco in Dec 1,1922. I would also like to find the death record of Manuel. He died around the time my father was 8 years old. I haven't been able to find that records. I have a record of pauline sanches Castellano from being born in Beaumont, Jefferson county in june 22 '1906. Any help I would be glad to give you if I could. 3. Carol, Sounds like you have a very interesting job. I'm glad you have this job as I know you will be a great steward of the books. You are so nice to offer your help once again just as you have in the past. Billie Brem, someone on our list, found this listing for my greatgrandmother, Sarah Jane Bolton Askins. In the Fall & Puckett book compiled by Mr. John Usry was the following: ASKINS, S. J., Mrs. 76 years of age. Funeral ordered by G. W. Carter. Date of death Mar 4, 1901, Hemorage of lungs. Interred at Mart, Texas, March 5, 1901. cost of funeral $37.00, recorded in Book 19 page # 5208. Her date of death was 1901 and you said your information is 1913-1930. But I thought possibly you might have something earlier. I am looking for the cemetery she is buried at. My husband and I walked the City of Mart Cemetery and didn't find her. Of course it was 40 degrees and misting with a cold wind, so we didn't do a very thorough job. Thanks again for your caring Sandra Denton County Texas ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Couch" <ccouch@hot1.net> To: <TXMCLENN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 12, 2001 3:15 PM Subject: Mart, Texas > I don't know if there are many of you interested in the Mart area but I will offer this up. > I recently started working at Mart City Hall, and to my delight discovered that there are > 3 volumes of death and birth records that were never sent to the state. I recently started working at Mart City Hall, and to my delight discovered that there are 3 volumes of death and birth records that were never sent to the state. These three books are in fragile condition, so no xerox is allowed, but if you have a birth or death record you are searching for from the Mart area in the 1913-1930 time frame, email me and I will see what I can do. Also, I am slowly transcribing these volumes ( to the best of my ability to read their handwriting) and am looking for suggestions of places to list these records. Where do you think is a great places to have them? I will take all suggestions. Carol Couch
