The Waco-McLennan County Library has a set of books that list those persons who died within the city limits of Waco. That might help you find the exact date of death so you won't have to search through the newspaper, as it is not indexed except for obits up through 1916. Thanks for the information. I will have a limited amount of time in Waco. Diane
The Waco-McLennan County Library in the Genealogical Section has all of the Waco Times Herald (currently the Tribune Herald) newspapers from 1898 to the end of 1999 on microfilm. They have a dozen viewers and 3 machines that will print directly from the microfilm. They have a very extensive collection. I am searching for an obit for William Cooper Simons. He died in Waco in the last half of 1948. He was born May 17, 1873. I believe he is buried somewhere around Waco. He had four brothers and four sisters. I do not know his parents names, but I believe that they lived outside of Waco on a farm. He was married in 1898 to Carrie Belle Bays in Erath county. They were divorced in 1913 or 1914. If anyone can help with information I would be grateful. If I can manage a trip to Waco, would the newspaper or the library be more likely to have records of the papers from that era? Diane Farabee

Hi, In an effort to obtain copies of my grandfather's paperwork, from a fraternal organization that he belonged to in the early 1900's, I ran into the following brick wall! Initially, I was told that the records could not be released because of the federal privacy laws. I contacted representatives of the U. S. Federal Government and NARA, both agencies stated the federal privacy law (Freedom of Information and Privacy Acts) only pertains to federal records. I was told that since I am the next of kin, I have the right to request my grandfather's records. When I sent the information to the fraternal organization, I received the following reply: Our Records Department has forwarded your request for any and all records that XXXXX possesses and that relate to your grandfather. It is my understanding that you are interested in receiving copies of anything XXXXX might possess for purposes of a genealogy search. On November 12, 1999 (may have been 1991), President Clinton signed into law the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act ("GLB Act"), Pub. L. No. 102-106 (1999). This law limits the instances in which XXXXX, as a financial institution, may disclose nonpublic personal information about consumers and customers. The GLB Act is applicable to all financial institutions, including insurers. In addition, state insurance regulators, as the functional regulator, have adopted regulations implementing the requirements of the GLB Act. As a result of these new laws, XXXXX does not disclose any consumer/customer nonpublic personal information (including whether or not an individual is or was a customer of XXXXX), unless such disclosure is permitted by law. I have contacted the Library of Congress to obtain a copy of the Public Law. I was unable to identify it on their website. Has anyone had this problem? Is there a way to get through this brick wall? Thank you.

Many of you may not have noticed this yet so I thought I would share. Through the efforts of many dedicated helpers, over 200 obits from the late 1890's - 1920's are now online. You may research them at: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/tx/county/mclennan/ or http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/mclennan/mclobits.html Also, the CTGS has now posted some of the Fall & Puckett Undertakers records online. These are extremely valuable records. You can view them at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txmclenn/ Hope that these sites are helpful to all of you. Carol Couch
I am interested in the Stephensons that lived in West,TX. around 1900. There was a Morris Holt Stephenson born around 1905 in West,TX, McLennan County,TX. His father believed to be Samuel Stephenson. Siblings of Morris Holt Stephenson were Myrtle, Oak, Trav, Lank, Edmund,Elmo and Ernest(twins) and Cecil. I believe the father of Samuel Stephenson was Sylvester Brown Stephenson and his wife Mary Holt of Ellis County. Samuel Stephenson went on to St. Simon's Island,Georgia. I am also interested in a Francis F. Stephenson who I know was living in McLennan,Texas in 1886. Her maiden name was Jennings or Jordan. Any help in finding information on these Stephensons is greatly appreciated Tom Stephenson

I'm new to this list and looking for a Charles Hart. According to a relative, he died around 1883-1884 and is buried in Waco, TX. Is there anyone who does cemetery lookups or is there a cemetery book that has been published? I know the State of Texas did not require death certificates until 1903, but did McLennan County keep death records prior to that date? If so, does anyone know how far back they go and how much the county charges for a copy of the record? Thanks in advance for your time, Delores in Colorado
I'd very much appreciate a lookup for the obituary of Edwin R. KERLEY who died in Waco on July 19, 1983. Thanks, Ann -- Ann Avery Hunter Richmond, Virginia mailto:annh@erols.com
