    3. James D Yankie was living in Mart in 1950. Born 1876 Limestone County. His sister Alder B Yankie Ayers, born 1885, may have been living in Waco at her death in 1964. Is anyone familiar with this family that started in Freestone County? 3. I was listing on eBay a Bewley's cookbook. Sprinkled through-out are a few comments from Texas women who had used the flour. Well, on pg. 28 was one of those ladies and she was from Waco!! What Miss Georgia McCluskey, 1900 Mitchell Street, Waco, Texas had to say about all-purpose flour (I assume she used Bewley's): "I always use all-purpose flour in making my finest cakes. I reduce each cup of flour by three tablespoons, and sift it six to eight times. I also sift the sugar I use in my cakes. I fine that all-purpose flour gives body, flavor, and the fine texture that I want in a cake." When I come down the Old Dallas Road from the credit union towards 'town', to get to Behren's Circle, there is an old white bldg. that looks like it might have been a store once. It's situated next to a trailer park. Very faintly you can see the old advertisiment painted on the side for Bewley's!! Teresa G.O.S.P.E.L. - God Offers Sinful People Eternal Life

    1. The "40" Singers Club
    2. Teresa Parrish
    3. Well, I went rummaging out at moma's for stuff to eBay. I found this neat little booklet. Front signed by Harry D Hoffman 1948. I have no idea what this was, a club or what. Maybe someone on the list knows. On pg. 2 is a little paragraph I'll summarize. It says the "40" Singers were organized Feb. 4th, 1904. Those signing this were deeply grateful to MR. E. J. Sparks for making it possible for this great gathering. They reference it to bringing back memories of nearly half a century ago. They reference themselves and other members as "Forties". This intro. was 'signed' by: Henry Stubbledfield Harry Hoffman Harry Bahl Earle Westbrook Willie Brown Perry Duncan Executive Committee Pg. 3 list those members living in Waco. Most are in Texas, a few out of state. Pg. 6 in an 'In Memoriam' page, unsure if these are Wacoans or what, I am listing them: Minor Byars, Shell Carter, E.J. Cortines, W.B. The on pg 7 is an interesting note, Editor's Note: There are two on the list, one Chester Dewey, two Luther Lowry, address unknown. If by 1988 the next Convention we do not find them we will have to put them on the dead list. Ex-Committee How odd?? 1988. Hmmmm??? So does anyone have ideas on what this club was for? Estimate two cups to a person, fill a small cauldron with cider, adding the maple syrup and cloves proportionately. Bring to a boil. On serving table or dining table, have small plates of lemon, a bowl of butter, and a shaker of cinnamon. Each cup is made separately-the cider being kept hot on the serving table in a chaffing dish (being constantly replenished from the cauldron in the kitchen.) Each cup being presented by a guest is filled with a ladle-full of cider, a slice of lemon, a dab of butter, and a final dash of cinnamon from the shaker. By making a ceremony of it the guests enjoy the fun of something new as well as the beverage itself. -Alma Graeter This concludes the recipes. 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Teresa Parrish To: ewbranham Sent: Thursday, September 05, 2002 5:47 PM Subject: Re: More re 67. I have seen part of the old hwy 6 when the lake was low. I had always heard when it was low, folks would use the old hwy 6 as a ski jump. In one of the pictorial history of waco books, either conger's or davis', conger's I think, it shows a pic of the old hwy crumbling under the wrecking ball, or whatever they were using. Now as you do down Valley Mills Dr. it becomes Lake Shore after a sharp curve. If you look straight from there (the curve), that was the path of the old hwy. Mom says she recalls the Massey farm out there as the state home would take the kids out there to help on the farm or something. Even the old McLennan family place is under. That is way over on the other side of the current hwy, the twin bridges. Looking at the 1958 map from the comprehensive plan is interesting. Over the then current lake was the proposed lake, the proposed shoreline. Under water was Lake Waco Golf Course, several roads around the Speegleville and Airport sides of the lake, Lake Dr., what looks like a rd. called Wright which run off Lake Dr., Old Walker's Crossing, Lake Shore Dr. (it was moved up to it's current path), part of hwy 6 off of which run the old Lake Shore Dr., part of Fish Pond Dr., McLennan's Crossing. See then Fish Pond joined up with McLennan's Crossing on the right and on the left with Midway School Dr. (now Estates). So now when you come to the end of Fish Pond you face the service rd. You turn right to a via duct and get to the other side. Now when you go on beyond Estates to Midway Park, the road ends to what I think is a boat ramp but may've been part of the old Midway School Dr. It's from comparing a current map to this one that I know the current Spur 412 from abt. Dosher Ln toward the lake is part of the original hwy 6. Also, Park Lake run off of Lake Shore then, and part of Park Lake is under water as is part of Hillcrest and Stewart Dr.. It is like this: off the old hwy 6 you went right to get onto Lake Shore Dr. After a ways you came to Park Lake first to the left, then the veer to the right took you onto Hillcrest. Off Park Lake then you had a left turn to get onto Lake Drive and then to the golf course. If you bypassed Lake Dr while on Park Lake you'd intersect to the left with Old Walker's Crossing. Stewart Dr. ended at Old Walker's Crossing. Today, there is a wee part of Stewart Dr. across the present day Lake Shore, but it dead ends because the rest of it went under. Same with Hillcrest. You can only go so far, the remainder of the original is under water. Also, back over near Fish Pond, there was a road that run off that about where the present day via duct is now. From this map it seems part of Ridgewood Country Club went under too. Ah, even part of Speegleville Rd went under. Actually, I heard tell that town was displaced to it's present location because of the lake's enlargement. So I am thinking the three Speegleville Parks, now with new names to ease confusion, may be on part of the old communtity. And off subject, also on this map is the proposed I-35, also called U.S. 81. And what we know as Loop 340 ain't in sight, there is no hwy beyond 6 to Bellmead as Loop 340 now runs. To keep this short I'll do another email telling where the cemeteries were that had to be moved. By 1964 there wouldn't have been any state hwy 67 left. It met its demise when the lake got enlarged. Way back when, without radios and all, I reckon a meandering hwy was the only way to break the monotny of a long road trip. :c) Teresa ----- Original Message ----- From: ewbranham To: Teresa Parrish Sent: Thursday, September 05, 2002 2:34 PM Subject: Re: More re 67. Not sure why you would go through Glen Rose to get to Ft Worth... but that is where 6 meets 67. Must have been to see bluebonnets. You said that C W Davis lived in the 3400 block on Memorial Dr. I am trying to remember my aunt's house number on Dutton. Seems like it was 3005, or some such, and the then new Baylor stadium parking lot was their extended back yard... so 3400 would have been just beyond Loop 6. On the 1964 Texas map which I have just found in my map box, US Hwy 67 ran from Dallas to Stephenville where it merged with 377. And FM 67 didn't do much of anything except provide a way to get from Covington to Blum. No State Hwy 67... at least none anywhere near Waco. ----- Original Message ----- From: Teresa Parrish To: ewbranham Sent: Thursday, September 05, 2002 2:54 PM Subject: Re: More re 67.
