New updated McCulloch County Cemetery Burial books will be available in several months. This book will contain records from all funeral homes in McCulloch County, official death certificate information from the courthouse records, and obituaries from old newspapers in addition to the tombstone readings from the 1985 burial book. Full names and dates of birth and death have been listed when possible and many burial names and dates are listed for lost graves without headstones. If you would like to reserve one of these books, please let me know. I need a tentative count in order to make arrangements for printing and to receive a definite cost per book. The book will be hard bound and the price will be around $25. Thanks, Louann
My grandfather Francis Marion Duncan Hopkins Jr. (F.M. Hopkins) owned a farm near Voca, McCulloch County, Texas from 1885 until his death in 1926. Actually this farm stayed in Hopkins family until 1933 or 1934. I have notes which various family members have shared with me of my grandfather Hopkins. It is said that he was a farmer, blacksmith, builder and bridge engineer. His public service included that of school trustee, and election judge. In 1892 he was elected to two public offices. Beginning 1 Jan 1893 he served one term as Precinct #2 Count commissioner, and 2 terms as Justice of the Peace. Do you know how I can confirm this? Any pointers will be helpful. Thank You,

I'm not sure if my earlier message reached everyone so will re-send it. I have several people doing research for our queries. If you will send me the names of the people you are interested in researching and the approximate dates they were in McCulloch County, we will watch for these names as we search for others. We have names from the queries that are now posted, but many of you are on the mailing list who do not have a query. These are the names we would like to have. There are several new queries that are not posted yet, but have been answered. These names are already on our list so you do not need to reply. Send your reply to the list if you'd like or email us directly. To: louann@centex.net CC: "C. F. Whitesell" <cfw@centex.net> (The 'CC:' is to Anna Lu Whitesell who has volunteered to help answer queries and locate information for people interested in McCulloch County research.) See information about Ransom (Rance) MOORE b abt 1820 AR; mar 1st abt 1848 to Permelia _____ (possibly Permelia CAMPBELL of Anderson Co TX??); in 1850 living in Milam Co with two children; apparently divorced or widowed by 1860. Rance MOORE mar 2nd about 1860 probably in Milam Co TX to Hettie (Hattie or Etta) SHARP; they appear on the 1860 Milam Co Census. They moved to the Bear Creek area of Kimble Co TX by 1862 with six children (including five children of first mar). They had eight more children, all born in Kimble Co except possibly one in Mason Co. About 1867 the family moved to Mason Co for safety during Indian raids, but they soon returned to Kimble Co where they lived until about 1875. About 1875 the family moved back to Mason Co where shortly afterward Rance died. Rance was bur in Koocksville Cem, Mason Co TX next to his son Daniel (see below). After Rance MOORE's death, Hettie Jane remarried Gabriel HURT (possibly HUNT). Unknown if any children born of this last marriage. Family legend says Hettie Jane died in Truth or Consequences NM, probably sometime after death of Gabriel HURT. Children of first marriage: Ann (m James BRADBURY Jr), William, Daniel (d 1867 & bur Koocksville Cem, Mason Co TX--accidental gunshot), Elizabeth and Mary. Children of second marriage: Sarah Ella (b 1860 m 1875 Lou M. WALTON in Kimble Co TX), James (or possibly another Daniel), Robert, John, Thomas, Creed, Lillie (Lettie) (m Charlie ERVIN), Josephine (m John BAKER), Kitty (m Light TOWNSEND). O. C. Fisher lists another child "Leaf who married J. A. BIRT". Late last year I pposted this query to these same lists and received a couple of fine responses. I am posting again in case there are new readers who might be able to provide information about Hettie Jane's life after her third marriage (to Gabriel HURT) and to confirm if she did, indeed, later relocate to NM. Thanks for your interest. Jo Morgan in Washington State
This is a transcription of a letter that my grandmother had. It tells of the murder of Lewis (John Lewis) McDOWELL in McCullough County on 5/11/1868. The author of the letter is the 2nd wife of Lewis McDOWELL, Nancy (maiden name unknown). His 1st wife, Emeline TIPTON died in 1866 in McCullough County and is buried in the Cox cemetery next to Lewis McDOWELL. The letter is addressed to Lewis McDOWELL's oldest daughter Elizabeth Jane McDOWELL and her husband James Alford DYKES who were living in Gabriel Mills, Williamson County TX. The minor children of Lewis McDOWELL came to live with the DYKES family in Williamson county. There is no punctuation in the letter, but I have added "/" to indicate the breaks in the narrative that appear to be sentences. The spelling and capitalization is as close as I can manage to the original. Cousin Caroline is looking for a SELF woman (first name unknown) who married James (Edward?) WATSON. She was born in Wood County, TX and may be buried there as well. She is said to be a full-blooded Cherokee and possibly James Watson's second wife. Her daughter, Martha Ann Watson, was born in September 1863 in either Arlington or Abilene, TX. James Watson was born in 1830, lived in Cross Timbers, TX after the Civil War, and was a justice of the peace there. He was possibly a descendant of Patrick Alfred Watson of Arlington, TX.
