Mr. White was born in Bay City, Texas, April 27, 1930, to Clinton Phillip and Vivian Ruth White. He attended schools in Boling Independent School District, graduating from Boling High School in 1948. At Boling High School he lettered in multiple sports and won a scholarship to play football at Wharton County Junior College. After graduating from high school, he attended Wharton County Junior College, Sam Houston State University and the University of Houston. He was also a graduate of management school at Louisiana State University. In 1950, Clinton joined the United States Air Force. Music was one of the many passions of Clinton’s life. He ultimately attended Sam Houston State University on a music scholarship, playing trumpet in the dance band, the Starlighters. During the early 50s he led Clinton White’s Dance Band that entertained locally. He was also a well noted avid collector. In 1951, Clinton married Wanda Head of Bay City, Texas. They lived and raised their family in Newgulf, Texas. He worked for 40 years as a dedicated manager of public and government relations for Texagulf Sulphur Company. Clinton was a member of St. John’s Methodist Church in Newgulf, Texas. Clinton White accepted his responsibility to his community in many ways. He was on the board of the American Red Cross, Girl Scouts of America, Wharton County Junior College Foundation Board and Wharton County Museum. He was past president of the Texas Public Relations Association and the Wharton County Junior College Foundation Board. He was a proud member of “Frankie’s Boys,” the Friday Club, and a founding member of Ducks Unlimited. Clinton was also a member of the Wharton County Historical Commission and the American Legion. He was an accomplished fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman. Clinton was active in Texas politics and loved his home state. He was appointed by Governor George Bush as commissioner of the Texas Historical Commission, where he served a six-year term. His many friends in Austin will surely be toasting him this week. Clinton White was also an impetus and guiding light for the reconstruction and preservation of the Wharton County Courthouse. Clinton and Wanda are the proud parents of three daughters, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to all of his family. He is survived by: his wife, Wanda; daughters and spouses, Cynthia and Frank Sinatra, Karen and Junior Herzik and Sharon and Bill Baker; grandchildren, Tammy and Scott Chambers, Jessica McMurrey, Tara Parker, Tiffani Harris, Brent Herzik, Marci and Chase Macek, Brittany Brink, Victoria Brink and MacKenzie Baker; and by his great-grandchildren, Kirby and Cale Chambers and Chase Macek, Jr. He was affectionately known as “Paw Paw.” He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas W. White, and infant son, Phillip Russell White. Visitation will be held at Wharton Funeral Home from 5 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1, 2006. Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, in Wharton, Texas at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2006, with Mickey Reynolds and the Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 87 of Wharton. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Pallbearers will be Scott Chambers, Chase Macek, Brent Herzik, Kostaki Chiligiris, David Lessenberry and Mike Robertson. Honorary pallbearers are his many friends and co-workers at Texasgulf.
