A gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life was held Saturday, February 18, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, North Carolina. Mr. Long was born on November 5, 1934, in Bristol, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Charles Edward Long, Sr. and Violet Knoll Long. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a former commander of the U.S. Power Squadron. Mr. Long had a passion for boating and fishing in Barnegat, New Jersey, and also just outside Sargent, Texas, in the Gulf of Mexico. He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Survivors include: his wife, Betty Cook Long of Charlotte; children, Cynthia Falkowski of St. Paul, Minnesota, Charles Austin of Sargent, Texas, Edward Long of Levittown, Pennsylvania, and William Long of Charlotte, North Carolina; and six brothers, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials in his memory may be made to erect a steeple at Bastrop Bayou Baptist Church, 130 CR 605-C 3, Angleton, Texas, 77515, where he was a member. Arrangements for the family are in the care of Heritage Funeral and Cremation Service, Matthews/Weddington, North Carolina. An online guest book is available at hertiagefuneral.net.
