He was born August 8, 1923, in Cut-n-shoot, to the late Miles James and Martha Ellen Adams Dowell. He was Rice Farmer and owned Calhoun County Pest Control Company, was a Deacon at Alamo Heights Baptist Church, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, member of VFW Post 4403, U.S.S. Pennsylvania Survivors Reunion, and honorary life director for Calhoun County Fair. Survivors: wife, Melba Dowell; daughters, Pam Janke of El Campo and Lori Strong of Port Lavaca; sons, Walter V. "Buddy" Dowell, Jr. of Port Lavaca, Chipper Dowell of Port Lavaca and Tommy Dowell of Snook; seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: one sister and six brothers. Services will be 10 a.m. today at Alamo Heights Baptist Church, the Rev. Tim Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Palacios Cemetery [Matagorda County, Texas]. Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home, 361-552-2988.
