Kemp September 11, 1932 - August 3, 2005 John E. Kemp, 72, of Winnie, died August 3, 2005 at his residence. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 6, 2005, at Broussards, 134 W. Buccaneer, Winnie, with the Reverend Kenneth Hodges officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be George E. Kahla, Claude Kahla, Buck Stobart, Todd Williams, T.J. Williams and Dallas Burgess. John E. was born September 11, 1932, to Turney W. Kemp and Sue (Andres) Kemp. He grew up in High Island, Texas. He served in Korea with the U.S. Navy, and married Emily Johnson Kemp. In 1957, they moved to Matagorda, Texas. He was employed as an operator at the Colorado River Locks. He lived 40-plus years in Matagorda and retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as Lock Master. In 1999, Emily went home to be with the Lord and Juanita (Tookie) became his loving wife and sweetheart, shortly after his moving to Winnie. Dad was a member of the Matagorda UMC, for many years, then continued to serve as part of the body of Christ, as an elder in several Bay City area non-denominational churches. Dad was also, at various times: president of the Matagorda school board, president and a member of the fire department, Scout Master of the Order of the Arrow, an advent fisherman and a cattleman (sporting a large handle-bar mustache for many years). He will be remembered most for his serving his family in love. Survivors include: his loving wife, Juanita (Tookie) Kemp, of Winnie, Texas; son, Vernon Kemp, of Matagorda; daughter, Rhonda Westbrook, of Bay City; two sisters, Betty Jean Barrow, of High Island, and Joyce Kemp of Houston. Dad was blessed with three grandchildren, a grandson, John Hayden Ellisor, of Houston, and two granddaughters, Shareth Wallace, of Bay City, and Kimberly Kemp, of Matagorda; great-grand-daughter, Baylee Lane Wallace, also of Bay City. After a courageous battle with breast cancer leukemia, she left this world to be present with her Lord on July 15, 2005. Sno was the youngest of four children born to James C. and Jean Harris (now deceased) in Bay City, Texas. She graduated from Bay City High School in 1973. Giving her life to Jesus at an early age, she served him faithfully during her lifetime. She is survived by: her loving and devoted husband, Arno Jack McCall. They were married October 3, 1980, and made a home together in the Richmond area. She is loved and survived by: her precious daughter, Ashley Clair Cooley, husband Chet and grandson Carson, who reside in Tyler, Texas; stepchildren, Kristen Lyle, husband Mike and granddaughters Kimberly and Kortney, Karen Kimble, husband Mike and grandsons Jack, and Luke and Kevin McCall and wife Cynthia; sisters, Pat Pool and Carolyn Bartlett; brother, Jim Harris; and in-laws, Jack and Gladys McCall of Houston, Texas. Sno was employed by Lamar Consolidated ISD, and worked in BF Terry’s attendance office. Over the course of many years, she served others by volunteering for numerous charity organizations in Ft. Bend County. She was “larger than life” and people gravitated to her positive and charming manner. While often finding humor in others, she was the first to laugh at herself. She has many family members and dear friends who will greatly miss her. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 18, 2005, at the First Baptist Church in Richmond, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters and 4 brothers, her husband Robert G. Zipp (August 2, 1981), her son-in-law Thomas J. Anderson (Sept. 7, 2002). She is survived by her baby brother Raymond (94) of New Braunfels, TX, 2 sisters-in-law (Bertie Foerster of San Antonio and Marie Kirmse of New Braunfels) her daughter Verna Hazel Anderson of Bay City, TX, 3 grandchildren and their spouses (Kitty Anderson Wainner and husband Ray, Tommy Anderson and wife Faye, Jack Anderson and wife Terri), 9 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Katie was raised in Schumannsville and worked on her parents farm where she performed a variety of chores to include hoeing and picking cotton. She married Robert, her childhood sweetheart, in January 28, 1920 and they made their home in San Antonio where Robert owned and operated a very successful business, Zipp's Men Store, for 45 years. Katie enjoyed homemaking, working in her garden, and being "Grandma" to all her grandchildren. She traveled some in her later years to include the far-away locations of Taiwan and Norway and spent time with her family at her New Braunfels ranch on special occasions. She resided in Bay City [Matagorda County, Texas] at The Legacy long-term care facility from October of 2000 and was looked after by her daughter and son-in-law Tom until the time of her death at the golden age of 106. Katie Zipp was known as a loving and caring person who was generous to all. Her life was a full and remarkable one, as she lived through 2 different millenniums,! 3 different centuries, and saw commercial transportation transition from horse-n-buggy to the advent of the airplane and automobile. She was truly loved by her family. God speed Katie, we love you and will miss you dearly. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to historical Schumannsville Cemetery Association. He was a retired US Postal Carrier for Rt 1 in Vidor, TX for 25 years. He also was a veteran of WW II serving in the US Army. He served in the Pacific Theater and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and 2 Bronze Stars. He was preceded in death by his sister: Clarice Adams; and brothers: Floyd and Willie Mizell.
