Funeral service was to be at at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2005, at St. John Baptist Church, with the Rev. Louis Simpson, officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m. August 26, 2005, at E R Johnson Family Mortuary, followed by a wake from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church (30th and Sealy). Herman was born August 2, 1929, in Bay City, Texas, to Archie, Sr. and Marilyn Jones Fields. He was a 1950 graduate of Hillard High School in Bay City. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He proudly served his country and was honorably discharged. Herman would then move to Galveston, where he met and married the late Azie M. Francis on May 23, 1955. He retired after many years of services from the L.L.A. and was member of the St. John church, where he served as a usher and in the Brotherhood until his health failed. He was preceded in death by his parent; wife, Azie Fields; two brothers, Isaiah and Archie Fields; and two sisters, Ella Grice and Fostena Edwards. Cherish memories will linger in the hearts of his two sons, David Lee Jones and Tyrone Fields of Galveston; grandchild; three brothers, Jimmy Fields of Houston, Hallard Fields (Jo Ann) of Freeport, Texas, and Tommy Fields (Brenda) of Galveston; two sisters, Mary Lee Tolson (Ernest) of Bay City, Texas, and Marilyn Lacy (Rev. Byrd) of Houston; three sisters-in-law, Ora S. Fields, Gertrude Nicholas of Galveston and Johnnie C. Fields of Bay City, Texas; brother-in-law, Frank Nicholas of Galveston; uncle, Lawyer Fields of Bay City, Texas; devoted friends, Claudine Jones, Ruby A. Hill, Freddie Merida and T.L. Young; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family sends special thanks to the Island Dialysis Center and Pastor Simpson and the St. John church family. He was a resident of Van Vleck since 1955. He came to Texas in 1939 and worked first for Abercrombie in Sweeny for 15 years, during which time he also served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941 until 1945. He retired from Brown & Root Construction Co. in 1981, after 26 years as a welder and pipe fitter. Survivors include: two daughters and a son-in-law, Robin Vos Havard of Wharton, Texas, and Janet Vos and Michael Amtower of Lake Jackson, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Gary A. and Angela Vos of Katy, Texas; brother, Glenn Vos of Almyra, Arkansas; and seven grandchildren, Kelly and Marc Amtower of Denton, Texas, Randie, Jeff and Carly Havard, all of Wharton, Texas, and Brandon and Lindsay Vos, both of Katy, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Alma Faye Vos. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 25, 2005, at the First Baptist Church in Van Vleck, with the Rev. He attended high school in Blanco, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University with a BA and master’s degrees in agriculture education. He taught agriculture for 10 years before becoming a rice farmer and rancher near Palacios in 1958. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a First Lt. in the 54th Armored Infantry, 18th Division. On November 27, 1944, his squad was captured by the Germans during the battle at the Siegfried Line. After five months as a P.O.W., he was liberated by the American troops in April 29, 1945. He is survived by: his wife of 58 years, Beulah Mae (Gunter) Sparks of Palacios; his sister, Mary M. Hickman of Midland; nephew, Jack Hickman of Midland; nieces, Shirley (Gunter) Kelly of Ganado, and Joyce (Gunter) Bannerot of Austin; great-niece, Rachel Hickman of Midland; great-nephews, Travis Rogers of San Diego, California, and Gunter Kelly of Ganado; and by his sister-in-law, Willie M. Mrs. Wilson was born March 4, 1942 in Baytown, TX to the late Herman and Ruth Marie Burns Ash. She died Aug. 10, 2005 at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, TX. Mrs. Wilson was a member of the First Baptist Church in Palacios, a resident of Palacios the past 2-1/2 years and a former longtime resident of Dallas. She was a member of the Palacios Chamber of Commerce, Palacios Area Historical Association and a board member beginning in 2005, incoming Athena Club president, and Century Club member of Friends of the Palacios Library. She organized the Red Hat Ladies, was a volunteer at the Palacios Community Medical Center and was a school mentor. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law: Ranelle Fowler of Dallas, TX, Eve and John Watson of Woodstock, GA, and Sarentha and Rob Kessler of Palacios; step-son Greg Wilson of Austin; step-daughter Amy Wilson both of Austin, TX; brother Paul Ash of Baytown, TX; and six grandchildren: Jake Wilson of Takoma Park, MD, Audry, Timothy and Daisy Kessler all of Palacios, and Matthew and Hanna Watson of Woodstock, GA. Martinez was born on the second day of December, 1932, to Juana and Prospero Martinez in Cuero, Texas, County of Dewitt, and died on August 11, 2005, at the Veterans Memorial Hospital. Sergeant John S. Martinez proudly served in the Armed Forces of the United States. He was stationed in Korea from 1953 through 1955. After an honorable discharge, he took residence in Bay City, Texas. He worked hard in the gas and oil field during his life and until his death. He was a familiar face loved and known by all. John was the proud father of two surviving daughters, Martha Belinda Sardelich and Melinda (Lynn) Anguiano. He was a loving grandfather to Anntasia, Zachary, Matthew and Seth Anguiano, and a great-grandfather to Summer Fern Baker. He loved children and was a step-parent to many children who entered his life.
