He was raised in Bay City, Texas by the late Florence and Marie Robinson. Ernest died Saturday, October 1, 2005 at his residence. Ernest joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served approximately one and a half years. He returned to Bay City, Texas and completed high school with his class. He graduated from Hilliard High School in 1945. Afterwards, he studied optometry for two years at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. Later, he worked at Celanese in Bay City, Texas. He was the first black male to be hired with this company and retired after 20 years of dedicated service. Ernest was a loving and caring man who acknowledged his relationship with God. He was a people person and made many friends. His leisure time was spent playing golf, dominoes, and spending time with his grandchildren. He leaves to cherish: his wife, Mary Tolson; one son, James Austin, Jr.; three daughters, Charlotte Tolson Lott (Clarence), Patricia Ann Brown, and Margery Watt (Fred); 12 grandchildren, Monique, Jennifer, Courtney, Jason, Marcus, Lisa, Cathy, Derrick, Reginald, Shay, Derrick and Terrance; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Elbert Tolson (Ocie); great-uncle, Ernest Robinson; one aunt, Rhena Robinson, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She was proud to tell everyone that she was 83 years old and was looking forward to her 84th birthday. She left her earthly cares behind on October 3, 2005 at Victoria, Texas to join her Heavenly family. She had a deep and abiding faith in God and prayed daily for the safety and well being of her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Ervin Henry Preuss; a brother, Emmit Schultz; sisters, Mary Jane Hadley, Elsie Merton, and Myrtle Hinton. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Charlie and Vernice Schultz of Rosenberg, whom she loved dearly. She will be missed by: her children, C.A. and Nancy Preuss of Ganado; Gladys and Billy Bassham of Ganado; and Joyce and Mitch Richmond of Bay City. She was especially proud her grandchildren, Arthur Preuss (Donna) of Conroe, Jackie Vaughn (Randy) of Victoria, Bobbi Wigginton (Jay Paul) of El Campo, Vicki Schneider (Patrick) of Bastrop, Candiss Evans (Terry) of Katy, and Curtis Richmond (Rachael) of College Station. She loved to brag about her great-grandchildren, Ryan Muscik, Kayla, Eric, and Alyssa Preuss, Devin Fowler and Kendra Vaughn, Jason Sulak and Lauren Wigginton, Chelsea and Allison Schneider, Dane Evans, Madison Avants, and Austin Evans. She was looking forward to the birth of her fourteenth great-grandchild in December. She is mourned by a host of friends and extended family. She will be especially missed by her close circle of friends who enjoyed daily phone calls and trips around town and to church. Many have already missed seeing her red and white truck traveling the streets of Ganado. Mamie and Ervin are remembered for the wonderful barbecue they cooked and served at their restaurant, Ganado Barbecue Stand. Mamie loved telling everyone about her years of driving a truck during the time they owned and operated a trucking business in Ganado. She also enjoyed embroidering keepsakes for her friends and family. Mamie worked many long, hard hours along side her husband. She was a strong woman, a faithful wife and a beloved mother and grandmother who will be sorely missed by everyone she touched. Pallbearers are Charles Wayne Preuss, Marty Preuss, Mike Standley, Jeff Merton, Larry Gonzales, and Donnie Tegeler. He started as a roughneck, at the age of 17 while in Wharton High School and retired after 49 years of service with the Richard’s Drilling Co. as a Senior Vice-President. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in occupied Germany after WW II. He married Elwanda Stunz on October 2, 1957 in Houston. Bill was a 26 year resident of Bay City and was Methodist by faith. He loved family, fishing, hunting and being with his many good friends. Funeral services were held at 10 am Monday October 3, 2005 at the Wharton Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Morgan officiating. Private family graveside services and interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. She served in the United States Army as a second lieutenant in the Philippines during WWII. Bernenice was a member of the Appleton, Minnesota, VFW. After graduating from high school, he attended Prairie View A&M University and shortly after joined the United States Army. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Trina Williams on July 17, 1973. Two children blessed this union, Olympia and Broderick James. He was called home on Friday, September 16, 2005, in Houston, Texas. He leaves to cherish many memories: a loving wife, Trina James; two children, Broderick James and Olympia James of Killeen, Texas; four sisters, Edith Johnson of Bay City, Texas, Earnestine Murroy of Pledger, Texas, Bonnie Lola Allen of Bay City, and Tiny Faye James of Bay City; three brothers, Carlton Ray James and Freddie C. She was born to John and Joan Dickerson on February 27, 1955, in Bay City, Texas. Shane grew up in Bay City and lived her early adult years there. She graduated in 1977 from Southwest Texas State University with a degree in Interior Design. A member of ASID, she was co-owner and designer of Interiors by Shane in Bay City for many years, and later was a partner in Lagniappe. In 1988, Shane married Don Carter and moved to the Conroe area. The family has since resided in Walden on Lake Conroe. Because of Don’s career with Edward Jones, Shane had many rewarding friendships and experiences with the Edward Jones “family.” Shane was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and friend. A talented designer by training and instinct, she also was people oriented, as her former clients would attest. Shane possessed a lifelong passion for dance, from childhood recitals, to the disco dance floor, to her middle-age tap lessons and performances. Her positive outlook, her sense of style and her exuberant personality will be sorely missed. Services for Shane will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 29, 2005, at Metcalf Funeral Chapel in Conroe, with the Rev. Mike Landes and the Rev. Mike Steele officiating. A graveside service will be at 4 p.m. at Cedarvale Cemetery (north entrance) in Bay City, with the Rev. John Pope officiating. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Metcalf Funeral Home. Shane is survived by: her husband, Don Carter; son, Mark; parents, John and Joan Dickerson; siblings, John Dickerson III and Jane Dickerson; nieces, Evan Wheat, Lauren Wheat and Caroline Dickerson; and nephew, Hawes Dickerson. In addition, she is survived by Lynn Longwill, Barb Holt, Rita Hinds, Diana Mathis, Cindy Garrett, Bruce Larson (Mark’s godfather) and a host of other friends and family. Sanford Oct. 16, 1915 - Sept. 15, 2005 Ernette C. Sanford, 89, of Palacios, passed away Thursday Sept. 15, 2005, at her residence. She was born Oct. 16, 1915, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, to the late Ernest Franklin and Olah Case Courtney. She grew up in Shreveport and graduated from Fair Park High School in 1932 at the age of 16. She then went to Louisiana Tech and graduated in 1936 with a degree in business. She taught school for several years, including one year in Guatamala. In 1941, she moved to Galveston, Texas, to get her medical technology training. While in school in Galveston she met a medical student, E.B. Sanford. They were married at the Methodist Temple in Port Arthur on Oct. 17, 1941. The coming of WW II changed their lives drastically. After graduation, E.B. joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and Ernette moved with him to Des Moines, Iowa, and then to Atlantic City, New Jersey. In 1946, they settled in Palacios and started a medical practice together on the second story of the old Feather Building on Main Street. She was a teacher, a laboratory technician, and a mother. Mrs. Sanford was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Palacios and a resident of Palacios for 59 years. She also was a former member of the Harmony Club and Wednesday Bridge Club. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Rufus Lewis of Rockport, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Hope Sanford of Buda, Texas, and Charles and Cindy Sanford of Missouri City, Texas; grandchildren, Candace Robbins and husband Steve, Nicholas, Samuel, Matthew, Daniel and John David Sanford. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Palacios, with the Reverends Ray Wells and Clint Harris officiating. Interment will follow at Palacios Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ted Bates, Jr., Don Hyett, Samuel, Matthew, Nicholas and Daniel Sanford. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Price, Dr. Ed Ferrell, John David Sanford and Scott Trull. She was born Dec. 23, 1916, in Hamlin, Texas, to Hoyt B. Hamilton and Iva Mae Jones Hamilton. She was a longtime resident of Bay City, taught third grade in the Bay City ISD for 30 years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. In 1972, she was one of three chosen for Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America. She was a member of many church and civic organizations and educators organizations. Mrs. Renfro was quoted as saying, “The most important thing in my life is my Lord.” She is survived by: two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Kate Timmons and H.M. Timmons of Salem, Oregon, and Patsy “Pat” Ann Vanderhorst and T.J. Vanderhorst of Annapolis, Maryland; by eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert H. Renfro, and a brother, Edwin Hamilton. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at Taylor Bros. Chapel.
