Alma was born September 23, 1913, in Austin, Texas, to Charley and Emily Janie Maxey Ray. She was raised near Wood Hi then moved to Port Lavaca as a young woman. She married Martin (M.L.) Crow in 1932. They moved their family to Bay City in the late 30s. She rolled bandages as a volunteer during World War II and worked at Q-P Supermarket. She was widowed in 1952, then married Henry Legg in 1958. They moved to Victoria, Texas, in the 60s, then to Houston. After Henry’s death in 1990, Alma returned to Bay City. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and of the Missionary Sunday School Class. She enjoyed the activities of the Jet Set, especially playing 42 and their breakfast meetings. She also was active for many years in the Rebekah Lodge. Mom was very loving, kind and considerate to all. She will be greatly missed by many family and friends. Alma was preceded in death by: her parents; two husbands; three brothers, Jasper, Charles and John Ray; and two sisters, Mary Bell Newell and Janie Ray. John always was an avid outdoorsman, his interests including fishing, hunting and camping. He was also a gun enthusiast and an active member of the NRA. She was born Nov. 18, 1900 in Uvalde, Texas, to the late Robert and Rosa Emma Marek Bullard. Mrs. Glaze was a resident of Sargent from 1934 until 1997, when she moved to Bay City. She was a member of the Sargent Baptist Church and she and her late husband owned and operated the Sargent Grocery for many years. Survivors include: two sisters, Grace Keener and Lucille Rodgers, both of Bay City; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Lonnie Glaze; sister, Emma Foltyn; and brothers, Cliff, Marion, Mike, Oliver, Henry and Bill Bullard. Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, with the Rev. Zach Nicholson officiating. Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. He was born Nov. 19, 1924, in Manchaca, Texas, to Joe Birkner, Sr. and Mabel Green Birkner. Butch was a lifelong resident of Bay City and member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a quiet, sensitive man who was a devoted caregiver to many family members and friends in their time of need. Otis first worked on Birkner’s Dairy, later as a brick mason/building contractor, and then as a partner in Birkner Lumber Co. In 1976, he and his wife Doris purchased the business, and it became known as Birkner Paint and Fireplaces. Butch was happiest when “wetting a line” in the river, or deer hunting with family and friends. He truly loved being outdoors. Those who knew him well enjoyed gifts of harvest from his prized vegetable garden or receiving a rose grown with special love. He is survived by: his children, Cindy Duncan and husband Terry, Linda Burgess and husband Larry, all of Bay City, and Donna Sutherland and husband, Gregg, of Wadsworth, Otis Birkner, Jr. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Charles Birkner and wife Jill of Magnolia; grandchildren, Shelly Duncan Graves, Sharon Duncan Jensen, Lauren Duncan, Robert Baish, Christopher Sutherland, Zachry Birkner, Taylor Birkner, Kaili Birkner and Rylee Birkner; and great-grandchildren, Maycee Baish and Anna Jensen; brothers, Joe Birkner, Jr. of Bay City, Otha “Skeet” Birkner of Vanderpool, Texas, and Jack Birkner of El Campo, Texas; sisters, Mary Kiesling of Kenedy, Texas, Anna Ruth Klein of Tomball, Texas, and Kathleen Stevens of Fort Worth, Texas; and cousin, Kenneth Birkner of San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by: his wife of 59 years, Doris Gest Birkner; parents, Joe and Mabel Birkner, Sr.; and sister, Mabel Birkner Wakefield. A funeral service was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, at the First Methodist Church, with the Rev. Pauline Harvey and the Rev. Kevin Young officiating. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck. Pallbearers were Wyatt, Tim, Donald and Jack, Jr. Birkner, Jeffrey Klein and Richard P. Stevens.
