Posted on: Llano County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Tx/Llano/307 Surname: MEDLOCK, HUFFMAN ------------------------- I WELCOME suggestions, contributions, solutions, hints and clues on the resolution of this puzzle. Susan Gillberg Sep 21 2000 Family Group Sheet Husband: Charles Medlock #3961 Born: Jan 17 1834 in: TN/AR Died: Dec 13 1911 in: Austin, Travis Co., TX 1 Buried: in: Crabapple Cem, Gillespie Co., TX Father: Thomas Medlock #9826 Mother: Unknown Spouse Medlock #9827 CHARLES MEDLOCK Charles was m1 to unknown, m2 to Olivine Huffman Charles and Olivine may have lived in Palestine, Anderson Co., TX [Need the 1910 Census/Soundex, obits, land records, wills, etc] Acc to Mark Moss and Mrs Shirley Lawson, Charles and Olivine actually died in Austin, although they were shipped back to the [Lower] Crabapple Cem., in Llano Co., TX for burial Since both Charles and Olivine were in the buggy/wagon, with son Charles was driving the team, and both were injured when it overturned, then they both were injured in Austin? One history (I think that is Violet Tuttle Smith's) lists both of them as having died in Palestine, Anderson Co. There's a book [information was supplied by one of Charles' children or grandchildren] has them buried in Cup Bird Cem., wherever that is. Geog. Info. mapping system found NO Cup Bird Cem. in Anderson, Llano, Burnet, Gillespie, Houston counties, and found 3-4 cemeteries in Crabapple. Charles died on the 13th, Olivine on the 23, and I think Papa [Joel Sampson Smith] said the accident was on the 11th of October. Probably means that Olivine died in Austin, also, and was also subsequently shipped to the cemetery, but that depends on how badly injured she was, and whether she was removed from Austin prior to death and died in Palestine, Anderson Co., TX. Mike Moss further said that the Medlock place(farm or cemetery?) was in Llano Co., "just across the county line" (from Gillespie Co?), which means that when one County was formed from the other, one ended up with the Medlock place (farm?) and the other ended with the Cemetery. I figure someone took both of them there by wagon, unless they shipped the coffins by train to Fredericksburg? [Have to check the RR from Austin to Fredericksburg, and then check the route to the Cemetery.] Looking at the below items: Now, as you can see the POD is the same, Austin, Travis Co., TX, and that both histories have Charles b. in 1834, and that the name of what I myself think is the FIRST wife Melissa (m. Sep 29, 1859), whereas Olivine Huffman is definitely the SECOND wife of Charles -- and that m. date of 1859 would work very well for the two Charles Medlock, s/o Thomas, bro/o Thomas. since it would supply enough time for the 1st wife to have several children, die, and then for MY Charles to m2 to MY Olivine Huffman. Second [dumb] question I have was whether IN, AR, TN part of the SAME Territory before they each became a State in the Union? That needs research. Third question, where is Cub Bird Cem? Is that in Llano Co., Gillespie Co., Travis Co., Anderson Co., TX? That needs research. Or was [Lower] Crabapple Cem. renamed Cub Bird Cem? BLM-ES, GLO, etc. has no record of land patents for MEDLOCK in Texas HOUSTON County Texas ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/houston/land/houston.txt Survey Blk Grantee Leag Section Abs [NO HUFFMAN] [NO MEDLOCK] Also, in the 1850 Cenus, Houston Co., TX, 356-356 there is a THOMAS MEDLOCK, age 42, b. SC, farmer, $1600; Rebecca, 33, TN; Charles, 16, IN; Marey A, 7, MO; Thomas N., 6, MO; John C., 4, [no POB]; Rebecca, 2, [no POB]; Marrey J. Miller, 13, TN; Henry, 1, [no POB] so here is a Charles Medlock, b. abt 1834 in IN, s/o Thomas Medlock b. in SC. In the, 1850 Cenus, Houston Co., TX, 365-365, there is JOHN H. HUFFMAN, 23, IL, Farmer, $160; Elizabeth, 18, IN; Eli B (m), 16, IL [Is Eli B. the same as Elijah Huffman, listed in the 1870 Burnet Cenus?] LLANO County Texas ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/llano/land/llano.txt Survey Blk Grantee Leag Section Abs THOMAS MEDLOCK T. MEDLOCK 5 981 CHARLES MEDLOCK C. MEDLOCK 1037 CONCERNING the 1870 Cen, Burnet Co., TX, V3, S34, L33-37 I have listed [oral history] Anne Medlock, Jefferson Medlock [who m. Elizabeth Smith, d/o of John W. Smith and Delana/Caroline Wooten], and Elizabeth Medlock [apparently b. prior to 1870 Cen, Burnet Co., TX, V3, S34, L33-37 or deceased or living elsewhere, because they were NOT listed on as in Charles' household. On that Census were listed Charles, Olivine, Mary (who is Harriet), Jane and Charles Jr. Fourth question, in the 1870 Census in Burnet County (formed 1852 from Travis Co), Charles & Olivine are listed as b. TN/AR. Is that because of the Civil War, that being born in IN automatically made you a Yankee? I know of one case of a man and his brother, two men by the surname Record, both born in IN, who were lynched ca. 1868/72 in Dallas Co. because they were suspected (not proven) to have been Union/Yankee. That was the 1st husband of Sarah Susan(nah) Bullock who subsequently was the 2nd wife of my mother's paternal grandfather Burrell Bertram Howell. So, IF the Charles/Thomas Medlock of Houston Co in 1850 is the same Charles/Thomas Medlock of Llano Co., TX land records DID they choose to lie about that birth in IN? Subj: Charles Medlock Date: 9/19/2000 11:06:51 AM Pacific Daylight Time From: R-Slawson@MSN.com (Sheila Shannon Lawson) To: Sjg3587@aol.com Charles Medlock b. July 17, 1834 Indiana d.1911 Austin, Travis County, Texas m. September 29, 1859 Melissa Olivine Huffman b.October 24, 1840, Shelby County, Indiana d. 1911 Austin, Travis County, Texas They are buried in Cub Bird Cemetery. -------------------- So a possible set secenarios: *The CHARLES MEDLOCK age 16 b. IN and the CHARLES MEDLOCK b. AR/TN are NOT the one and same person despite similaries, oral history put in a book, LDS records, etc *Melissa Olivine Huffman was the 1st wife, Melissa Unknown, 1840-1861/62 and Charles m2. in 1861/62 Olivine Huffman 1845-1911 *Melissa Huffman 1840-1861/62 was the 1st wife and Olivine Unknown 1845-1911 was the 2nd wife THEREFORE *Harriet/Mary Medlock Lawson Smith was the d/o Melissa who died promptly after her birth of Harriet/Mary and Charles promptly m. Olivine, who raised Harriet/Mary who assumed Olivine was her birth mother *Melissa had 2 children (m. Sep 1859, d. 1862), and Olivine had the rest of the children. Acc. to Harriet Smith Dunn, "It's a pretty name. Grandmama had an older half sister named Elizabeth. Grandmama and Elizabeth were both born in Fredericksburg, TX. They spoke only German." which is what she was told by Papa (Granny Medlock Lawson Smith d. 1938 when Harriet was not quite age two, so it had to be Papa that told her about Elizabeth the half-sister.] The existence of Anne Medlock, Jefferson Medlock [who is reported to have m. Elizabeth Smith, d/o of John W. Smith and Delana/Caroline Wooten], and Elizabeth Medlock is so far only oral history from Harriet Smith Dunn, Joel Sampson Smith, Willie Faye Tuttle Tyler, Mark Moss, and several others, and I have not tried to track down these people on census or marriage records or burial records as yet. However, I have a solution -- perhaps -- for Melissa Olivine Huffman Medlock, in that I found on the 1900 Cenus, one Malicia (Unknown) Medlock, born Oct 1841, AR, possibly a widow, with one son in the household, Riley J Medlock b. Jun 1877, TX, and I don't know if they are related or not. --------------- Subj: Re: Charles Medlock Date: 9/20/2000 6:45:33 AM Pacific Daylight Time From: R-Slawson@MSN.com (Sheila Shannon Lawson) To: Sjg3587@aol.com My information is from a book. It is the History of one of the counties. I will have to find the my had copy to get the exact name, but the information was supplied by one of Charles' children or grandchildren. I will email the info as soon as I find it.
