    3. Posted on: Llano County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Llano/10444 Surname: COWAN, GARRETT, MOORE, BUFFALOE ------------------------- I have some info on a W.O. Tow. It is actually court records that came about with his murder trial. W.O. Tow was charged with murder of James Cox. James was the son of Francis Cox Cowan. It seems W.O. charged his wife Homa Jean of having an affair with Joseph Vinson Garrett. JVG was my gg grandfather. He testtified at the trial as did his wife. I am not sure if his wife is my gg-grandmother because he, evidentally, married sisters. I don't know which sister was there. Mrs. Tow also testified. W.O. was found guilty of second degree murder, and this was appealed. The appeal was granted and the conviction was overturned. I do not know if there was another trial. It states in the records that W.O. had taken his wife back to her mother several times for having this affair, but always came back to get her. Mrs. Cowan, his mother-in-law, had told him not to come back to her property again or she would blow his head off. This particular time he came and she picked up her shot gun and backed him out of house and back towards a wood pile. At the wood pile she picked up an ax and held in stiking position. From behind Mrs. Cowan a shot rang out, but missed its target (W.O. Tow). W.O. fired back and his bullet hit Mrs. Cowan's son James Cox in the leg. W.O. ran. He sent a neighbor back to get his horse, and the neighbor did go get it and the doctor, but James bled to death. W.O. was charged with his murder, but it sounds more like self defense to me. This info was shared with me from Pam Sanders. I could send you a copy if you like. Just let me know where. I would also like to know what happened on the appeal. He was originally found guilty of second degree murder and sentenced to five years. Will try to find more.

    3. Posted on: Llano County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Tx/Llano/10433 Surname: Hughes, Scott, Gray, Rogers, Ratliff, Windham ------------------------- I'm looking for ancestors/descendants of my gggrandmother Rhoda R. Hughes born April 1853 in Texas and died 1930 in either Llano or Burnet, Texas. She is buried at Hoover Valley cemetery in Burnet county. Rhoda married John R. Scott on July 1, 1873 and they settled in Llano and had the following children: 1. Dollie (1874-1954) 2. Nora Edna (1877-1908) 3. Clara Victoria (1879-1961) 4. Ernest O. born (1881-1978) 5. Leslie C. born (1884-1977) Nora married William Thomas Rogers and later after she passed away he married Dollie. Ernest married Millie Windham on July 3, 1903 in Llano Co., Texas. (Millie was the daughter of William M. & Sarah A. Windham) Leslie married Maggie Ratliff on Jan 3, 1906 in Llano Co., Texas. Clara Victoria married Thomas Franklin Gray. I have had no luck in finding parents or siblings for Rhoda. On the 1870 Llano Co. census there is a James E. & Malinda Hughes with children listed as Caroline, Margaret, John, Henry, William, Mary Catherine, Betty Jane and Malinda. This family is also found on the 1880 census but I'm not sure if they are found on the 1860 census or not. My question.... are James & Malinda the parents of Rhoda? On the 1870 Burnet census there is a Roda Hughs listed by herself of the correct age but am not sure if this is my gggrandmother. I'm hoping to find descendants of Rhoda & John's so that maybe I can find the answers to my questions.

    3. Posted on: Llano County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Tx/Llano/10431 Surname: ASHFORD, CULP, STEELE, GEORGE, REAGOR ------------------------- I am researching the ASHFORD family and can share what little I know (or suspect) ... Martha E. ASHFORD was the daughter of Henry ASHFORD and M. Jane CULP. She was b. c1866 in Ellis Co., TX, and married J.L. STEELE, 30 Aug 1883 (per online Llano County marriage records). I have no info on her after this date. Martha's father died apparently in Ellis County before the 1870 US census. I believe that her mother md/2 Benjamin F. REAGOR, 26 Jun 1871 in neighboring Navarro County. The last record that I have on this family was found in the Ellis County deed records: 16 Dec 1885 - Mrs. Harriett J. MILLER* and Miss Maggie J. BEARD, both of Ellis Co., TX, say under oath that they were well acquainted with Henry ASHFORD and wife, M.J. ASHFORD, during the lifetime of said Henry ASHFORD, now dec'd, and that the said Henry ASHFORD died near Ennis in Ellis County and that his widow married (unreadable) REAGOR, and that Henry ASHFORD at his death had three living children: Laura A., William B. and Martha E. ASHFORD ... and that Laura is now Mrs. D.M. GEORGE, Martha is now Mrs. J.L. STEELE, and William B. ASHFORD is 21 years old and residing in Ellis Co., TX. (Ellis DB 42:62-63) I found on the web that Benjamin F. REAGOR md/2 Emily Frances GILLESPIE, 24 Aug 1891 in Llano County (the online marriage records list her as Mrs. E.F. REAGOR). This implies that M. Jane CULP died before that date. If you have any info additional info on the ASHFORD-STEELE connection, I would love to hear it. I hope this helps! * Harriett MILLER (nee ASHFORD) was the aunt of Henry ASHFORD; Maggie BEARD was her daughter from her first marriage.

I took my scanner with me and brought back quite a few images as well, including records from one of the old Risinger Bibles. I do have photos of Cynthia E. Smalley Risinger, William Risinger, his wife Sarah Josephine Barnett Risinger (William's second wife -- she is a sister of your Adelia Barnett Risinger from Llano County), and William's first wife, Emily Barnett (who apparently was NOT related, or at least not closely related to Josephine and Adelia Barnett. Some of the photos are from old tintypes. But the one with William Risinger, Sarah Barnett Risinger and Cynthia Smalley come from a large portrait (16X10) made from a photograph of the family outside the Risinger family homestead near Lake Victor, Texas, taken prior to 1905 and hand tinted. I scanned the individual people in the portrait at a high resolution, and they came out quite well. There are no negatives available. I also came across William Risinger's application for a Confederate Veteran's Pension from the State of Texas, which contained quite a bit of information about where he was from, and the unit he served in.
