He would not turn up in my searches of just Hammond on the soundex form of spelling for me on Ancestry. Soundex will usually turn up most spellings of names unless they are just totally mis spelled. I know where he is I found him reading the 1870 Limestone census . I just though some one else might be looking for him. Are you using Ancestry ?
