Dear Limestone County List, After YEARS of trying to identify my Permelia Smith on the 1860 US Census of Personville, I have finally put this family together, I think. There have been others on the list working on these names. I would appreciate any of their imput. Permelia is found on the 1850 US Census of Shelby County, TX living with her husband, James Smith. In their household is: 1. James Smith, age 59, born in NC 2. Permelia, age 39, born in SC 3. Mary A. age 18, born in Texas 4. Rachal, age 16, born in Texas 5. Wm. age 12, born in Texas 6. John, age 9, born in Texas 7. Charles, age, 5, born in Texas 8. Catherine, age 4, born in Texas (my ancestor who married John A. Cotten) 9. Stephen, age 25, born in Tennessee 10. Narcissa, age 25, born in Alabama. Next door is: 1. Thomas Peoples, age 25, born in Tennessee 2. Sary E. age 25, born in Tennessee (I think this may be a daughter) 3. Stephen age 6, born in Texas 4. Robert, age 3, born in Texas 5. Mary A. age, looks like 12 months, born in Texas Now when I go to the Personville, Limestone, TX 1860 Census I find these listings: Precinct 5, dwelling 322: 1. Permelia Smith age 49, from SC (no husband on census) 2. Jno. age 18, born Texas 3. Chas. age 13, born in Texas 4. Catherine, age 12, born in Texas 5. Henry, age 9, born in Texas 6. Emily age below one year, born in Texas (If this is Permelia's daughter, did her husband just recently die or could this be a grandchild?) 7. Jane Holoway, age 8, born in Texas (Who is she?) 8. Stephen Peeples age 13 born in Texas. ( Thomas Peoples and Sary E.'s child?) Next Door: 1. Stephen Smith age 30 born in Tennessee 2. Narcissa, age 30, born in Alabama household 327 next to Permelia Smith 1. William Smith age 22, born in Texas ( I think this is son of family) 2. Lucinda age 17 3. Jno.H. age 9 months. household 321 next to Permelia Smith 1. Elisha Baty age 45 from SC 2. Mary A. age 27 from Tennessee (could this be her daughter, Mary A.?) 3. Wm. R. age 8 born TX 4. Jas age 2 born TX 5. Harvey Moody age 25 These pieces of this Smith puzzle are interesting. First, James Smith is 20 years older than Permelia. Perhaps she is the second wife, and the older children are not hers. But then she could have married very early. On the 1870 US Census of McClennan County, TX I found a Charles Smith, age 25 married to a Narcissa Smith age 39 from Alabama. Could this be Stephen Smith's widow married to the younger brother? There is also a William and Lucinda Smith. I would really like to correspond with any researchers interested in this family from Shelby Co. TX and Limestone Co. TX. Thanks, Betty
