Linda, I am proceding to resurvey the Coolidge cemeteries because the information is extremely outdated. Even if the older lists get typed up the surveys are missing a surprising amount of information. The older cemeteries probably won't change much, but cemeteries still in use need to be resurveyed. 3. I have been reading very carefully all of the instructions about converting from pdf to txt and have learned a lot. Thanks to all who have furnished this info. But when I get the info pasted into my word processor (Word) it is still as though it is "selected" and I cannot do any editing. I have tried the "save as" but that does not seem to be an option for me. Any suggestions here. 3. I am trying to get this organized. Please, BEFORE you start working on a cemetery, let me know so I can tell you if anyone else is working on it. I would hate to have to tell someone that their hard work was all for nothing - it makes me very uncomfortable. Mr Farmer has redone two cemeteries today too! You can still look at the cemetery directory to see what has been done. The ones that have been done are at the bottom in ALL LOWERCASE letters. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txlimest/cemetery/ I'm currently matching the Thornton cemetery against a printout I made. My husband's SPARKS family is buried at Thornton. -- Gina Heffernan Asst Coordinator, Limestone County

    3. Help!! Can anyone tell me what's really going on? It sounds like everyone is taking off in different directons. Last I thought I saw from David was to hang on to see if existing files could be changed, and now I'm seeing all these emails from individuals about having typed up some of the cemeteries. I've offered to type some but have been waiting to hear from David exactly what we are going to do. Maybe I missed something? Somebody needs to coordinate this then put out instructions on what is to be done and assign cemeteries to those offering to help. There's no sense two or three people typing the same thing. Please let me know if I'm supposed to be typing something, and if so, what. 3. That will be fine. You go ahead and walk the cemeteries and post to this mail list. If you allow me to, I will them put them on the web page and in the archives. In the meaintime, I hope ALL the cemeteries will be done, including the Coolidge cemeteriies, so we will have a copy of all of them. THEN, we can update them. Using Help | Contents | Index Back 103 Working with PDF Important: You cannot copy or export text and graphics from any PDF file if the security settings for that file are set to prevent copying. Copying PDF text and graphics to other applications Acrobat 5.0 gives you powerful commands for repurposing or extracting text and graphics in PDF files. You can use the Save As command to save all text in a PDF file in Rich Text Format (RTF) for import into your favorite authoring application. If your PDF files use tagged Adobe PDF, you can extract the text without losing the formatting. For example, you can save pages of tables from a PDF file for import into an application such as Microsoft Word and the table formatting will be preserved. Both (See “About the different types of Adobe PDF documents” on page 82.) You can also use the Save As command to save each page in a PDF file to an image format. You can use the Export command to export all images in a PDF file; each image is saved in a separate file. In addition, Acrobat provides several tools—the text select tool, the column select tool, the table/formatted text select tool, and the graphics select tool—for copying and pasting small amounts of text and graphics from a PDF file to your clipboard. While in a PDF document, you select the text or graphic and copy it onto the clipboard. Once the text or graphic is on the clipboard, you can launch the other application and paste the text or graphic into a file. Note: If a font copied from a PDF document is not available on the system displaying the copied text, a default font is substituted. 3. Well, thanks Gina. I learned something new. 3. Good morning Sandra and others, I have re-typed two (tiny) graphical pages this morning, trying to find out what the options are but I couldn't use OCR because the images are so blurred. I haven't found one yet that has text. When you open the file, there are two tools on the right side of the toolbar for Acrobat. One is a large T with a dotted box, the other is a circle? and a square inside a dotted box. The "T" tool is for text. You can click it and then outline the text you want to copy. Click the "Copy" tool then go to NotePad or Word and "Paste". If that tool doesn't work, try the other one. It is for copying and pasting graphics and you only have to copy the part you want. You can paste the graphic into Word or Excel or even Paint to print it, but the print is not very clear. Those are the ones that will need to be re-typed. I dropped them into Excel and then typed on the right side of them so I didn't have to print them. (I have my screen set to high resolution so I had plenty of room - you can also change Excel to show the page at 80% or so and have some room. I can convert almost anything to txt (Archives background) but I am not a fast typist. When you look at the index at http://www.rootsweb.com/~txlimest/cemetery/, the cemeteries which have been done are at the bottom because they start with small case letters, the upper case letters come first in sorting. Make sure the cemetery hasn't been redone before you start on it. The file sizes indicate (to me) that all of these are graphical. The Mexia cemetery is almost 5MB so we will probably need more than one person to work on it. Gina svanwyk wrote: > > Hi Gina, > > I was able to read them Acrobat Reader 5.0. 3. Sorry, I hit the sent button before I was fnished. I guess my next step should be to take the .doc file and convert down to an ascii text file, which I believe David can read. But I think there is someone else working on the conversions, so I'll wait to see what's needed. Thanks, Sandra Van Wyk > Hi Gina, > > I was able to read them Acrobat Reader 5.0. 3. Hi Gina, I was able to read them Acrobat Reader 5.0. I used a conversion program pdfedit995 and the program said the choices were to either Word or html. For some reason, and I think because of the way they were originally, it would only convert to html. Once at html, then I was able to convert to .doc files. It took several steps just to get the first cemetery file to .doc. David Morgan then said he can't read .doc files. If they are put on the internet in html, then they are readable. It appears that these are scanned pages; maybe he had a page with the headers already printed, then he typed the text on that page, then scanned the whole page. I got it to a .doc format, but you can't do anything with the text. You can only view it. I would almost suggest that the volunteers get a copy of what's readable, then retype them so they will be able to update the files. I believe someone said these cemeteries were inventoried a few years ago so need to be updated.
