To the List: If you have Tennessee roots you will be interested in a new publication titled "The Reconstructed 1810 Census of Tennessee." To be published in June, this 600-page volume will include more than 30,000 records of citizens of Tennessee in 1810. Since nearly all of the original census was destroyed many years ago, this reconstructed census will be an invaluable research tool. The work is based on names extracted from tax lists, court minutes, church records, wills, deeds and other sources dated 1809-1811 in Tennessee. The author made this extensive effort to track every adult male in Tennessee. In addition many entries for women, children, free blacks and slaves were also located. The book was complied by Charles A. Sherrill, a well-known Tennessee genealogist, librarian and lecturer. His earlier works include "Tennesseans in Court" and "Tennessee Convicts." For a sample page of text and ordering information, contact the author at this e-mail address: [email protected]
There has been enough interest expressed to justify my efforts. I'll scan each page over the Memorial weekend and e-mail them, 5 at a time, to anyone interested. Hope that won't overload anyone's isp. Anyone interested - please give me you e-mail address at [email protected] I'll be happy to send just 1 or 2 pages, but please don't ask me to do individual lookups in the cemetary books themselves. I've always got too many projects going at once anyway. Thanks for all your interest and encouragement. David Strickland
I am VERY interested! Thank You for your offer Cindy [email protected]
There was a Mrs. Morrow (her first name escapes me at the moment) who did a complete set of 11 or 12 volumes of cemetary inscriptions of all known cemetaries in Freestone County. I believe that they were published in the mid to late 1980s. I also believe that Mrs. Morrow passed away earlier this year. Soon after she finished her last volume I did a complete surname index for the complete set. At one point I had her written permission to distribute the Index to anyone asking for a copy - in the hopes of increasing her sales. If anyone is interested I could scan my surname index - giving the surname, cemetary, volume and page number, for her works. I'm not sure of the legal status of her transcriptions, but at least one could know which cemetary and volume to check out. I know the Library in Mexia has a complete set of her works. Not sure about the library in Fairfield. Contact me privately at [email protected] if you are interested in this index. I have no objection to posting it on the Freestone County Rootsweb Website if the administrator deems it appropriate. Thanks David Strickland Dallas, Texas

Hello, I am new to this list. I am trying to find out about the Henry G. SANDERS family that lived in Limestone and Falls Counties in Texas. He was born in 1832. Henry married Mary M. Gage in Limestone County in 1857. Their children were George E. Sanders; Ella wife of H. A. Paine; Julia wife of James Marlin; Rhoda wife of John Atkinson; H. Edward; Mary Dodie wife of W. W. Miller. Henry served in Co. F 15th Texas Cavalry in the Civil War. A Edward M. ALTSON served in the same company. In the 1870 census of Falls County, the son of Edward M. ALSTON, George ALSTON (age 12) was living with Henry G. SANDERS and family. Would like to know if there is a relationship between the two families. Any time and consideration would be greatly appreciated. Janet Gardner
Harper Cemetery is just east of Waco, off Hwy. 84 in Elk, McLennan County, Texas. At one time this cemetery may have been called Harper's School Cemetery. Volunteers and neighbors have cared for the cemetery over the years but it is a very big undertaking. The cemetery is about 3 acres and is in need of cleaning and upkeep. There is a group of people who met in January and again in February for two very successful days of cleaning. We will meet Sunday May 20th, at 2p at the cemetery for our first organizational meeting. You are invited to join us. Please feel free to pass this on to any interested persons. You may contact me for any questions. Sandra Carter Van Wyk

Hi, Sharon! In a recent very interesting posting you made on the Limestone County Texas site at RootsWeb, you were discussing several different migration patterns into Texas. Throughout the discussion, you continually made reference to "Texas Territory", which I am assuming to be a term you are using to refer to the lands of what is now the State of Texas prior to 1845. I'm wondering out loud if this is correct. The word "territory" applies to many states of the United States before they were formally admitted to statehood. The United States Congress recognized the various "territories" and they actually had governors and laws and such. But Texas was never a "territory" of the United States in this sense. >From 1836 to 1845, it was the "Republic of Texas" and before that, it was part of Mexico, but I don't believe it was considered a "territory" of Mexico. Maybe it is just my old pride of being a Texan, but it just doesn't feel right to say these people went to "Texas Territory" in the same context of "Missouri Territory" or "Arkansas Territory". But I'm not sure what the proper term would be for the pre-1836 time period. Judd Stiff A Texan Living in California
