There were many people there that night, most with tears in their eyes. There was a small cluster of older (it seemed to me in my youth) ladies clinging to each other and whispering comforting words to each other. Of course at the time I had no understanding of what was really happening, but there was an article in The Paris News the following day with a picture that I will never forget. The picture showed that in the midst of all the ashes there was a huge white cross that was not hurt at all in the massive blaze. It's possible that a church in my old neighborhood is the next generation of the members of that beautiful old building. That church is called Oak Park United Methodist church. Garrett Memorial was somewhere in the vicinity of 15th street S.W. and Kaufman, West Austin, or Bonham Streets. I'm sorry I can't get closer than that, but I really was quite young when it happened. I can even remember asking my mother the next day if her family had "owned" that church, but we are not related to these, obviously very generous, Garretts. Janet Anderson
