    3. From: Clovis LaFleur To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, April 26, 2005 4:15 PM Subject: Rev. Oliver Porter Stark Hello, My name is Clovis LaFleur and I am doing research on the Descendants of Aaron Stark [1608 - 1685] who came to New England from Scotland about 1630 and settled in an area that became Groton, New London County, Connecticut. As a reference, I've been using a text titled, "The Aaron Stark Family, Seven Generations," by Charles Rathbone Stark, published in 1927. In his book he wrote: "Rev. Oliver P. Stark was a Presbyterian minister, born in New York State. He labored for many years as a missionary among the Choctaw Indians, and afterwards founded the Lamar Female Seminary at Paris, Tex., where he remained until his death in 1884." Oliver was the son of Nathan Stark and Mary Porter. My research revealed there was a Nathan Stark living in Newburgh, Orange County, New York in the 1830 census who had a son between the ages of 5 and 10 and others in the household which agree in approximate age to the Charles R. Stark Text. According to the CRS text, Oliver's ancestors were: Parents were Nathan Stark, III and Mary Porter Nathan Stark, III was the son of Nathan Stark, Jr. and Rebecca Palmer Nathan Stark, Jr. was the son of Nathan Stark, Sr. and Anna Fitch Nathan Stark, Sr. was the son of Abiel Stark and Mary Walworth Abiel Stark was the son of Aaron Stark, Jr. and Mehitable Shaw Aaron Stark, Jr. was the son of Aaron Stark [1608 - 1685] and his wife Sarah (Unknown) I am a descendant of Aaron, and my branch of this family moved to Newton County, Texas via Genesee County, New York at the time of the Texas Revolution. Have an interest in descendants of Aaron who eventually made their way to Texas. I have found considerable information on Oliver and his family on your Lamar County Rootsweb site and would like to express my appreciation. My comments on Oliver follow and after sign-off, I've placed a Descendants report on Oliver and his wife Harriet McCormic using much of the data I found on your website. If there are any descendants on the list, would be interested in hearing from you. Again, many thanks to those who have contributed to the Lamar County Website and if your website has any interest, your more than welcome to any of my research on this family. =============================== Comments by Clovis LaFleur, April 2005 Rev. Oliver Porter Stark was born August 8, 1822 in Newburgh, Orange County, New York. [1][2][3] He was the son of Nathan Stark and his first wife, Mary Porter. Sometime before 1850, Oliver was ordained a Presbyterian minister and about 1849 or before, he married Harriet McCormic. They had 10 children; Mary B. Stark (born about 1850), Frances L. Stark (Born about 1851), Cyrus Kingsberry Stark (Born July 2, 1857), Nathan Henry Stark (Born about 1859), Kate Stark (Born in October 1860), Elizabeth Stark (Born July 24, 1863), Helen Stark (Born December 12, 1866), Ida Stark (Born in March 1869), Oliver Porter Stark, Jr. (Born about 1870), and William B. Stark (Born about 1872).[3][4][5] From 1850 to about 1870, Oliver was a missionary working in the Indian Territory of what later became Goodland, Oklahoma and was superintenant of the Goodland Indian Orphanage. [1][3][6] About 1870 and before 1872, Rev. Stark and family moved to Paris, Lamar County, Texas, where for some years he supervised a school for girls, remembered by older residents of Paris as Lamar Female seminary. Oliver died April 12, 1884 and was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery. [7] --------------------------------------------- [1] "The Aaron Stark Family, Seven Generations," by Charles R.
