Jones, an executive of an international accounting firm and a notable worker for civic, cultural and charitable organizations, died of cancer Thursday in a Houston TX hospital. He was 56. At the time of his death, Jones was managing partner of the Houston office of Deloitte & Touche, where he had worked for 35 years. With 1,200 employees, the office is the largest accounting firm in Houston, said Jerry Bennett, the firm's regional public relations manager. Jones "approached every task, both in business and in his personal life, with utter determination and absolute competence," said Grant Cook, a lawyer and friend. "Everything he did was done extremely well." Among the organizations that Jones served in as a board member are the Greater Houston Partnership, Junior Achievement of the Southwest and Theater Under the Stars. In 2002, the University of Houston-Downtown honored Jones as an Outstanding Volunteer for his work as chairman of the Red Rose Ball fund-raising event in 1999 and 2000. He also headed the UHD President's Advisory Council. Jones also raised funds for the art project at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, which sells Christmas cards featuring the drawings of children who are patients at the hospital. Larry Glenn Jones was born Sept. 12, 1948, in Paris, Texas, the son of Roscoe and Edith Johnson Jones. He graduated from Paris High School in 1966. In 1970, Jones graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin. Shortly after, Jones joined Deloitte & Touche. Survivors include his wife, Lyn Wood Jones; daughters, Jennifer Jones of Nashville, Tenn., and Cary Jones, of Los Angeles; and stepdaughters Wende Dunaway, Stacy McNair, Channing Dry and Logan and Whitney Wells, all of Houston TX. JONES died peacefully on July 14, 2005 in Houston,TX after waging a lengthy and determined battle against cancer. Larry was born in 1948 in Paris, Texas, the son of Roscoe and Edith Johnson Jones, both of whom predeceased him. Larry was an honor graduate of the University of Texas at Austin in 1970 where he was a member of Kappa Sigma social fraternity and a number of honorary societies. Upon graduation, Larry began his lifelong successful career in public accounting at the international firm, Deloitte & Touche, where he recently celebrated his 35th year with the Firm. Larry was Managing Partner of the Houston Office of Deloitte & Touche. Larry was a member of the American Institute of CPA's, the Texas Society of CPA's, and the Houston Chapter of the Texas Society of CPA's. In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by his sister, Sherry Kay Jones. He is survived by his loving w! ife, Lyn; and his daughters, Jennifer Jones of Nashville, Tennessee and Cary Jones of Los Angeles, California. He is also survived by his step-daughters, Wende Dunaway, Stacy McNair and her husband Stephen, Channing Dry, and Logan and Whitney Wells; and grandchildren, Stephen, Jake and Dylan McNair and Alexis Pratt, all of Houston. A private graveside service, for the family to attend, will be conducted at Memorial Oaks Cemetery on Monday morning, the 18th of July. The memorial service for Larry will be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Monday, the 18th of July, in the Sanctuary of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive in Houston. Following the service, all are invited to a reception in Larry's honor at a location to be announced in the church service bulletin. In lieu of usual remembrances, the family has suggested that memorials in Larry's name be directed to the University of Houston Downtown, Dress For Success, or one's charity of choice.
