Jim, Thank You so much for doing this. I will definitely make this one of my stops. I do think it is a shame it is in such disrepair. I wish I lived closer, that would be a good weekend project. I would love to see your pictures. Once again it pays off asking questions on the mailing lists and sharing information. Thank You again; Shirley in Henrietta, Texas Jim Giddens <jimgidd@suddenlink.net> wrote: Old City Cemetery. I am not well verse in Lamar County. I pulled in on a angle to make sure my trailer hitch did not drag. I did walk the entire cemetery and looked at every marker. I enjoyed seeing some of the old history names. I mentioned the A.H. Latimer marker. A.H. Latimer had a section of land in northeast Red River County that was an original land owner in Texas. Before the county seat was in Clarksville, in was in LaGrange (Madras) in A.H. Latimers house. It was he or Hamilton (or both) that was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. I took several pictures with my digital of the complete cemetery and of some of the interesting grave markers. Just for information. The Kirkpatrick Bates sounded familiar for some reason. I looked through my files were I had some Bates mixed in with some Beaty names I was collecting and found a KIRKPATRICK BATES married MIRANDA DAVIS March 28, 1869 in Fannin County, Page 40 Book Q. Hello list, I am researching my great -grandmother family. She was Mary Alice Robinson - b. Feb. 5, 1877 - Ark. - at some point she had to go live with the Lem Gilliam /Gillium family. She married H.C. (Henry) Frederick in Lamar County Dec. 24, 1891. Would appreciate any information- help on these - Mary Robinson -family; Lem Gilliam/Gillium family ; HC Frederick . It was said she was part Cherokee, but not sure about that. Thank you, P. Adams ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
I had a good visit to the Old City Cemetery. Maybe more details later but for now, the cemetery was freshly mowed and it good shape as for as the grass goes. Now worry about a gate or locked gate. I was looking for several names that were given. Lee, Hamilton, Tidwell, Higgs, Lynn and Emery. Lynn was the only one I found, many markers can not be read. I took over a dozen pictures of the interesting cemetery. Dessie infant daughter of Sml & Maggie Lynn born ??? 20, 1874(?) died July 23, 1875 Maggie A Lynn wife of S?? Lynn born Jan 13, 1851 died July 18(?) 1875(?) I did see a Mattie, wife of a A.H. Latimer, born 1844 died 1883 but no Hamilton. In the old Shiloh Cemetery in Red River Co. There was a marriage between a Hamilton and Latimer, early pioneer family came to RR Co around 1833. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx p.s. there is a vacant lot between Graham and the Cemetery. I parked on it close to the fence and walked right in after drive up on 6th st off Graham. I have been told by family that was living in Paris in 1982 (?) that this water tower was swaying when the tornado passed over. I was living in Dallas at the time but if I remember correctly there were 11 people killed in Paris by that tornado. It was a bad one. When I saw mention of the water tower, that was my first thought. I will may a drive to the cemetery later this p.m. and report back my observation. I will have my camera in case I want to take some pictures. Most interesting. >From the location given, I will be glad to drive by over the week-end and have a look and look for some grave markers. Maybe that could give you and headstart with your limited time. I have worked on Bonham and 7th and have driven this area of Graham street probably at least 300 times. I have never noticed a cemetery (and cemeteries usually get my attention). However, I probably need to get off of Graham to see it. I recall a Self Storage business on that area of Graham. Maybe the graves are around behind the selfstorage. Whatever, I will at least drive around the block tomorrow and then go from there. I am coming on Oct. 7th. I am meeting Winona Harper in Paris. Her grandparents were Clint and Sally Mae Lynn Tidwell, they are buried in Union Grove Cemetery, along with other Tidwell's and Higgs relatives. My great grandfather Virgie (William Virge) was Clint's brother. In 1900 my Great Great Grandparents Benton and Nancy Parlee Higgs Tidwell lived in Paris, Texas. Nancy was born and raised there. Benton died in 1906, someone said in Haskell county, while visiting his son. Cannot find where he is buried. Nancy died in 1923 in Spur, Dickens, Texas, while living with her son, Thomas Almon. But I cannot find where she is buried either. I am going to meet Winona in Paris at 10 am, my son is going to bring me and we will only be able to stay till about 3 or 4 because my son will have to get back to go to work on Monday. I am also researching Nowell. William Virge Tidwell married Mary Francis "Fannie" Nowell in Paris. They are buried in Grapevine, Texas. But Winona and I are going to focus on our Tidwell and Higgs on the 7th. We hope to meet someplace where we can look thru what material we each have and compare notes and then go to Union Grove and The Old City Cemetery and take pictures. Do you know if anyone else is working on the Tidwell, Higgs, Nowell, Lynn, Emery surnames? Debra, I cannot thank you enough for sending the info about the Old City Cemetery. I was really glad to read it. It makes you kind of sad that it was mistreated in a way. Do you know if it is locked or if you can get in to look around? Thanks again for everything; Shirley BBIRDSWIFE@aol.com wrote: Sorry, don't know that much. When did you say you were coming to Paris? Carolyn; I personally do not know but I will look on the 7th when I go there and see if I see that name. I will make a note of your info in this email and see what I can find. I have been told it is locked at all times, but I am going to check it out. Will let you know. Diane or someone else may know for sure. If the water tower just NW of downtown is still there, should be easy to find. Sorry I don't remember and didn't record the exact street. The self storage unit is 2 blocks West of that, on the corner of 7th N.W. and Graham. Debra ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
