Hello, My name is Clovis LaFleur and I am doing research on the Descendants of Aaron Stark [1608 - 1685] who came to New England from Scotland about 1630 and settled in an area that became Groton, New London County, Connecticut. As a reference, I've been using a text titled, "The Aaron Stark Family, Seven Generations," by Charles Rathbone Stark, published in 1927. In his book he wrote: "Rev. Oliver P. Stark was a Presbyterian minister, born in New York State. He labored for many years as a missionary among the Choctaw Indians, and afterwards founded the Lamar Female Seminary at Paris, Tex., where he remained until his death in 1884." Oliver was the son of Nathan Stark and Mary Porter. My research revealed there was a Nathan Stark living in Newburgh, Orange County, New York in the 1830 census who had a son between the ages of 5 and 10 and others in the household which agree in approximate age to the Charles R. Stark Text. According to the CRS text, Oliver's ancestors were: Parents were Nathan Stark, III and Mary Porter Nathan Stark, III was the son of Nathan Stark, Jr. and Rebecca Palmer Nathan Stark, Jr. was the son of Nathan Stark, Sr. and Anna Fitch Nathan Stark, Sr. was the son of Abiel Stark and Mary Walworth Abiel Stark was the son of Aaron Stark, Jr. and Mehitable Shaw Aaron Stark, Jr. was the son of Aaron Stark [1608 - 1685] and his wife Sarah (Unknown) I am a descendant of Aaron, and my branch of this family moved to Newton County, Texas via Genesee County, New York at the time of the Texas Revolution. Have an interest in descendants of Aaron who eventually made their way to Texas. I have found considerable information on Oliver and his family on your Lamar County Rootsweb site and would like to express my appreciation. My comments on Oliver follow and after sign-off, I've placed a Descendants report on Oliver and his wife Harriet McCormic using much of the data I found on your website. If there are any descendants on the list, would be interested in hearing from you. Again, many thanks to those who have contributed to the Lamar County Website and if your website has any interest, your more than welcome to any of my research on this family. =============================== Comments by Clovis LaFleur, April 2005 Rev. Oliver Porter Stark was born August 8, 1822 in Newburgh, Orange County, New York. [1][2][3] He was the son of Nathan Stark and his first wife, Mary Porter. Sometime before 1850, Oliver was ordained a Presbyterian minister and about 1849 or before, he married Harriet McCormic. They had 10 children; Mary B. Stark (born about 1850), Frances L. Stark (Born about 1851), Cyrus Kingsberry Stark (Born July 2, 1857), Nathan Henry Stark (Born about 1859), Kate Stark (Born in October 1860), Elizabeth Stark (Born July 24, 1863), Helen Stark (Born December 12, 1866), Ida Stark (Born in March 1869), Oliver Porter Stark, Jr. (Born about 1870), and William B. Stark (Born about 1872).[3][4][5] From 1850 to about 1870, Oliver was a missionary working in the Indian Territory of what later became Goodland, Oklahoma and was superintenant of the Goodland Indian Orphanage. [1][3][6] About 1870 and before 1872, Rev. Stark and family moved to Paris, Lamar County, Texas, where for some years he supervised a school for girls, remembered by older residents of Paris as Lamar Female seminary. Oliver died April 12, 1884 and was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery. [7] --------------------------------------------- [1] "The Aaron Stark Family, Seven Generations," by Charles R. Have you searched the Lamar County Cemetery records on the LCGS webpage? This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: RAGSDALE UNDERWOOD BARNES FARRIS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YlB.2ACI/2000 Message Board Post: My grandfather,Thomas James RAGSDALE,was born in Logan Co,Ark in 1880. My Dad always told us he was part Indian, probably Cherokee. His parents were John Benjamin(b.1851 Ark)RAGSDALE and Nancy Ann UNDERWOOD(b.1855 Ark). His paternal grandparents(by LDS records) were Benjamin(b.1824 Tn,maybe Hickman Co)RAGSDALE and Caroline(b.1826 Tn)STOVALL. From other records, I believe that Benjamin's father was William (b.1782 NC) who was next to him in 1850 Johnson Co,Ark. William's line goes back to Godfrey in the 'Elijah Ragsdale' book by Mrs.June Hart Wester. Thomas married Clara Lee BARNES at Brushy,Sequoyah Co,I.T.(near Sallisaw,Ok) 22Nov 1903 by W.M.Grose, MG(Minister of the Gospel). They lived on the farm (probably in the Sadie community) of William Isaac (Ike) Copeland who had a son named Anderson Copeland. My father Albert Abner Ragsdale was born near 'Tater Hill' (Potato Knob?) about 11 mi southwest of Sallisaw in 1913. The midwife who named him was named Aunt May McGlouthin. Tom and Clara 'separated' or 'divorced' about 1915. He joined the Army in WW I in 1918 from Groal,Ok(I have not been able to find where this was located-may be Grove?). He served with the 90th Army Division at Ft. Sam Houston,Tx but was never sent overseas as far as I can find.He was in Lamar Co,Tx in 1920,shown as 'divorced'. I have researched county records and written to all nearby counties but there seems to be no record of their 'divorce'. Tom and his mother Nancy Underwood Ragsdale and sister Louisa Ragsdale Farris and her husband Levander (Van) Farris became members of the Mormon Church in Lamar Co,Tx in 1924.They were in El Paso,Tx in 1930. Tom worked for the WPA there. Nancy and Louisa and Van Farris are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in El Paso. Tom died in Jan 1943 and is buried at Ft.Bayard, Silver City,NM. Clara remarried in Faulkner Co,Ark in 1918 to James Tom POTTS. I am looking for descendants of Thomas's siblings:Louisa Caroline Farris(m.Van Farris),George Washington(m.Maud Lowery),John Malachi(m.Annie Bloodseal),Martha Elizabeth(m.Henry Pharis,Curt Moore,William Underwood),and Henry Benjamin(m.Iva Reeder). Henry died in Odessa,Tx in 1978 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Paris,Tx. His son Gentry B.Ragsdale was in Brownwood,Tx in 1995.
Thank you Trena, I am not sure about the relation yet. I am still trying to trace the kids but this will be good to hang onto in case.
