These records are not 100 % accurate...you just don't know who talked to the enumerator. This was the only Evans family in Moore in 1900 census. The oldest living child, Lafayette, is indicated as being born Jan 1891 in Indian Territory. Mary had lost 2 children of the 8 that had been born during the 12 yr marriage. It appears they did not stay in Arkansas long after they married. Most of the 1890 US Federal census was destroyed in a fire in the 1920's but perhaps there may be some Indian territory records that may have some information. Try Rootsweb for those records. Oklahoma has a pretty good website for such things. His death certificate possibly would have his parents names on it. The 1920 record shows that his parents were from Missouri. I did find a Wm Evans in Lamar county in 1860 record who was 5 mos old and the parents were from TN ?

Petty, also known as Lookout and Dowlin, is a rural community at the junction of U.S. Highway 82 and Farm roads 137 and 1509 sixteen miles southwest of Paris in western Lamar County. It was first settled after the Civil War and was originally known as Lookout for its location on a small rise. After the Texas and Pacific Railway was built through the area in the mid-1880s, the town's name was changed to Dowlin, reportedly because passengers were frightened when conductors called out the name Lookout. In 1886 a post office was established, and the town's name was changed to Petty in honor of J. M. Petty, a local landowner. By 1890 the town had a church, a general store, a district school, several steam-powered gristmills and gins, a blacksmith, a furniture maker, a drug store, and an estimated population of 350. The town continued to grow during the 1910s and 1920s, reaching a peak population of 500 in the early 1930s. Subsequently the town steadil! y declined. The number of businesses fell from twelve in 1933 to only two by 1965; in the same period the population dwindled to about 100. In the early 1990s Petty was a dispersed rural community; it had an estimated population of 100 and two rated businesses. Handbook of Texas Online, "PETTY, TX," http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/ There were more Dowlin's than Petty's in Lamar county in 1880...no male Petty who seems to match " J M ". Due to the fire in the 1920's that destroyed most of the federal census for 1890, including Lamar county, land records would have to be searched to find this J M Petty. The 1880 census is on the LDS website.

Have you tried to run a search on the LDS site or with the Rootsweb.com? You would be amazed at what that will turn up sometimes.
I doubt that I have much for you, but will tell you what I know. From the writings of Judge A. W. Neville, an eminent Lamar County historian: "...the town of Petty was so named only after quite a contest in which there was an effort to call it Dowlenville. The railroad station was known as Lookout and when the post office was to be established the fight for the new name was brought on, the adherents of Petty being victors." As far as I can determine, there were no Petty families in that area at that time. There was a man named Z. R. Petty serving as county tax assessor/collector in 1866, but I do not know where he resided. The 1900 census for Lamar County shows three Petty families living in the Petty voting district. H/H are: Calhoun 46 AL SC AL, Fayette C 36 MS SC AL, Franie (F) 60 AL. The town of Petty was incorporated in 1888; but never set up any town government, and the county continued to maintain the streets (or street) in the town. It may be incorporated now, and probably is. I hope this is some help. The person who is coordinating the MURPHY DNA Project is Beverly WHITE whose email address is: [email protected] You should contact Beverly directly to join the project or for more information. "Succcess Story":What prompted my renewed interest in the MURPHY DNA Project is that I, Ken SHIRLEY, have already benefited significantly from the DNA project. My first cousin, Charles N. MURPHY, is a recent participant in the MURPHY DNA project and has received the results of his 37-marker DNA test. These results showed that the DNA sample of Charles N. MURPHY, descendant of Thomas L. MURPHY 1826-1901 [same line as me], matched 25/25 with a descendant of Bazil G. MURPHY b1822 AL and 24/25 with Solomon MURPHY b1822 AL, both of whom resided Southern Illinois per 1850 census and both of whom were completely unknown to either Charles N. MURPHY or to me. These results indicate that the three MURPHY DNA project participants have, with some degree of certainty, a common MURPHY ancestor. The connection between Thomas L. MURPHY 1826-1901 and the other two MURPHY men is not known, but it gives us many new avenues of research and more people will be involved in the search. A few reminders: A MURPHY DNA project participant must be a MALE with the surname of MURPHY [or any variation such as MURPHEY, MURFEY] or any male who thinks his surname might once have been MURPHY]. Female MURPHY descendants/researchers [as well as male MURPHY descendants/researchers who are not named MURPHY] can assist greatly by recruiting male MURPHY DNA project participants and/or assisting the male participants financially with the cost of the DNA testing. Hope you will contact Beverly WHITE soon and arrange to receive the DNA test kit or assist in finding project participants. Thank you for your interest. Ken Shirley Grantville, Kansas

The following e-mail is of great concern to any genealogists who use archives. Please read, sign the petition, then send this to any other Rootsweb or genealogy lists you're on. The President's budget recommendations for Fiscal Year 2006 slash or eliminate more than 150 federal programs. In that budget, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) has been targeted to receive NO funding. This includes no funds for the grants program and no funds for staffing to support the NHPRC programs. It effectively eliminates NHPRC. The Council of State Historical Records Coordinators, the Society of American Archivists, and the National Association for Government Archivists and Records Administrators are working collaboratively to address this threat to NHPRC and NARA. Archivists across the U.S. are rallying to save NHPRC while also ensuring that NARA has sufficient funding to sustain its current programs and continue to advance in areas that benefit all archival repositories and every citizen of the United States. As part of our efforts to continue to express to Congress interest in restoration of funding for NHPRC, we have created an online petition. Please consider signing this petition, and please forward it to any listservs, e-mail groups, or organizations and people you feel would be interested in helping with this effort. It is a quick and easy way for many people to assist. The petition will be forwarded to the House Appropriations Committee and Subcommittee on Treasury, Transportation, HUD and the Judiciary in late May. The petition can be access at: _www.savearchives.org_ (http://www.savearchives.org/) Click on the "petition" button. If you have not received a previous action alert on this issue, we encourage you to also write a letter to your members of Congress.
