You should call the Kaufman Chamber and ask these questions - 972 932 3118 - they will be open next Tuesday after the holiday. There are NO big manufacturers or campanies here - this is a rural area - people who work for those type places drive into Dallas to work. We have one company that make stainless steel tables, one that makes boxes, and a steel fabricator that makes those huge power poles seen on the side of highways.....all manual labor jobs - most of which are low-paying and held by our large hispanic population. If you want to make more than $10,000 a year here you either teach school or drive into Dallas to work. I wrote you and answered your same questions earlier this week - ( what? you didn't believe my answers.....? ) Just in case you didn't get them - Here they are again: Closest BUS STOP is in Terrell, 10 Miles north of Kaufman. It is a GREYHOUND Bus Stop inside a Convenience store - no transit buses here. There is no public transportation in Kaufman County - closest is in Dallas County. Not even a Taxi here...... Closest Airport with Commercial carriers is DFW Airport, about 60 miles from Kaufman. Best way to find housing is to call the Chamber of Commerce - 972 932 3118 or Check the On-line Rental Ads of the Kaufman Herald - the weekly newspaper here. But Rentals here are hard to get - most ofd teh time they get rented before the ad even comes out, via word-of-mouth. We do have trains here - they run straight through the county - very loudly & too quickly-----they have Amtrac, but you have to travel to Dallas or Shreveport LA to get on or off the train......unless you're a hobo..... For someone willing to move here, seems you have done no research as to what this tiny place is like.....this place is NOTHING like anything, any place in Pennsylvania - hell, even the Amish back there are more populated than we are! Most northerners who move down here, immediatley go into Culture Shock, then hurriedly move back North or move to Dallas! Kaufman County has no 4 **** restaurants - no Sushi, no philly steaks, no haogy's, no Thai.....there are no theaters, no dance clubs or Hard Rock Cafes - it's 10-15 miles between every town, and that's on 2 lane roads with nothing inbetween but farms, trailer houses, 100,000's of acres of cotton growing (when the drought isn't in full force - like it is now) and LOTS of cattle. Demographically we are on the POOR side of the financial scale, the LOW side of the population graph and our schools aren't recognized as being anywhere close to the Best - and there are no Universities here - only junior colleges! "Continued" education has to be continued outside this county.... Actually we LIKE being away from the Big City ( that is encroaching too fast for us). Traffic flows well unless one of our farmer's is driving his tractor into town for new tires or it's 20 minutes til 3 and all the dang school buses come hauling out and jam up Washington Street (the Main road thru town) or it's Sunday noon and the Baptist church is just let out....but that only lasts til everyone has crowded into the Dairy Queen for lunch. Oh - we are modern - We have 4 Signal lights! Yep- FOUR! To put it in context - We ain't Mayberry (yuck!yuck!) but we sure ain't Phillydelphium! BTW - This List is for Genealogical purposes, not relocation purposes. Hi Justin, Yep, you described Kaufman to a T. I grew up near the Trinity River at Bristol, Texas and acquired the name "River Rat" and I learned to fight early and hard when my Garrett, Texas "friends" called me River Rat Kid. As I grew older, and we wanted adventure my friends and I would travel to Kaufman for fun. It's a lot more there than Bristol. :-) Plus, sometimes we came home via Kemp, Texas, my birthplace.
