I think it's very possible that the Newton Ayres who was chairman of the board of the stores may have been related to James Polk Ayres, but thanks to the clues in the article you sent, I've just discovered that the Dukes who were connected with the stores came from Georgia to Texas. Much farther back, they may have been related to "my" Duke family, but mine came from England to North Carolina, then to TN, MS, AL, TX, etc. It would be really interesting to find out more about the possible connection. Thank you so very much for sending this. Best regards, Brenda

It was listed in the Kaufman Co. Business Directory, July 1929, according to info found online. A cousin (3 times removed) in my DUKE line, Hixie Rebecca DUKE, married James Polk AYRES in 1865 in Grimes Co., Texas. I can only find them in census in 1880 in Brazos Co., Texas, but according to another researcher, James Polk AYRES died in 1884. As far as I know, he and Rebecca had no children, but he had several siblings. I'm trying to figure out who the owners of the Duke and Ayres business were. If you know anything at all about the Duke and Ayres stores, please let me know. Thanks very much. Brenda

TN, Civil District 15, page 9B, you will find the answer to your quest. A. D. is Anderson Patton, his wife was Nancie C., both were about the same age, Nancy or Nancie was born in July of 1854 going by the 1900 census. Anderson is listed as Anderson C. Patton on this census, but on the 1880 census he is listed as Anderson D., so guess the D. middle letter is the right one. I hope this helps you. Johnny
Looking for the marriage of a Mr. McDonald to a Mrs. Nora (Tankersley) Whitton Lawrence Montgomery. The marriage took place between 1920-1945. She was a usual resident of Van Zandt county but this marriage is not on file there. So since this was a 4th marriage, am seeking the record in an adjacent county. Thanks Jackie

Mr. Hartley, there is listed a Mrs. N. L. Bowles May 06, 1848 - May 18, 1926 in Oakland Memorial Park Cemetery, Terrell Texas. I checked what obits I had for the year of 1926 and did not find one for her under the name of Mrs. N. L., Mary S., or Rilla Bowles. I also checked the City of Terrell death records and Anderson/Clayton Funeral Home records for Forney & Terrell and the Kaufman County Death Records for her. None listed. Hope this helps some. Lafayette Bowles buried in the Oakland Cemetery. He was born 04 May 1844 in Georgia and died 27 Aug 1900. He had been a member of Company B of the 16th Georgia Artillery or Infantry during the Civil War. That company was mustered in Jackson County GA. I believe this might be Nuldus L. Bowles who was in Forney TX as late as the 1900 census. What I need to know is if his wife is buried beside him. The 1900 census identifies her as Mary S. Bowles, but she might be listed as Rilla Bowles. She was alive as late as the 1920 census where she was living with her son, Clarence. Both Clarence and his wife Minnie Bowles are buried in the Hillcrest Cemetery according to online records. Can someone help me with this? Thanks, Charlie Hartley [mailto:hartley@iglou.com]
