    1. Campbell family of Mississippi to Ellis & Kaufman Co, TX
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FkB.2ACE/1556 Message Board Post: John L M Campbell was born 22 Apr 1812 Tennessee and died 18 Oct 1888 near Hickory Flat, Union County, MS (you can find this family in the 1860 Census Desoto Co, MS, 1870 Census Marshall Co, MS and 1880 Census of Union Co, MS) and is buried in Old Oak Grove Cemetery, Union County, Mississippi. He married Elizabeth A M (Liza) Choate born 12 May 1823 Virginia and died 28 Jul 1915 Mississippi. She is buried in Old Oak Grove Cemetery, Union County, MS. Children were: Francis (male) Campbell b 1848 MS John M Campbell b jul 1851 MS (in the 1870 Census of Marshall County, MS (list on ancestry.com as Jall but it is really J M) 1900 & 1910 censuses of Ellis County, TX. Married Mary A E Stewart. Children were Cynthia (married William Edward Deatherage), Eliza A, Thomas Robert, Ophelia, Joella (married ? Deatherage), Emma E (married Albert L Godwin), Jettie, and Dessie. William A Campbell b 1854 MS (may be the family of the 1880 Census Tate County, MS) If he is in Tate County then his wife was ME, and kids were J L (male), W R (male), Ann, I L (female). Martha E Campbell b Oct 1858 MS married William A Belk. Had one stillborn child in 1883 who is buried in Old Oak Grove Cemetery. After John's death in 1888, Liza Campbell lived with this family until her death in 1915. Thomas Ephraim Campbell b 07 Sep 1860 MS - d 08 Jan Abilene, Taylor County, Texas. Married Melinda Jane (Linnie) Faires in Tate County, Mississippi. Some of their kids were born in Kaufman County, TX. Their daughter Minnie Bell Campbell married William Arthur Scarborough and they mostly lived around Ellis & Kaufman Counties of Texas. Other Campbell kids were Lillie Dell (married Edward Dodd Barfield), Parilee Frances (married William Edgar Lasley), Ada Louise (married William Luther Barfield, Jettie F (married Richard Wilkins), John Thomas (married Viola Frances Nolen), and Mildred Viola (married Thomas A Gracey). The Scarboroughs are my family. Robert Lee Campbell b 23 Jun 1863 MS - d 07 Sep 1937 probably Union County, MS. Buried in Macedonia Cemetery, Union County, MS. Wife was Dora Garrison. Children were Clyde J (married Claudie Eck Beckworth), Geneva, Donnie (married Wiley Robbins), Henry Fines, Ona S (married a Fields), Louis Eldredge (married Edna ?), Dewitt Talmadge (married Govie ?), Ethel, Hattie & Marie (the last 2 may be the same person, hard to tell in census records) According to the 1910 census of Union County, MS Liza Campbell listed that she had a total of 8 children, but only 5 were living. I believe Francis may be one of these 5 since I have yet to find a record of him after 1860. So the other 2 may have been infants. I also believe that John L M Campbell may have been related in some way to Cornelius C Campbell the son of Samuel Patrick Campbell and Margaret (Peggy) Brown as he is in Marshall County, MS which John's family moves in and out of, and his son (my ancestor) Thomas E Campbell ends up in his neighborhood in Tate County, MS in 1880. (Thomas is listed as F E Campbell and is 3 pages prior to Cornelius and his kids.)

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FkB.2ACE/1555.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Thanks again Justin for all the information. You have been most helpful. What I neglected to mention in my original post was a marriage between R. J. McNorton and Edny Pace on 23 Feb 1858 in Smith Co, TX as listed in Texas Marriages 1851-1900. I am assuming [and you know how dangerous that can be] that this is the same R. J. McNorton and Edna who gave birth to John in 1859 as listed on the 1860 census for Kaufman Co. And then Edna marrying Ludvig Anderson in 1866 and John 11 living with them in Cherokee Co in 1870 but R. J. McNorton not appearing in either Kaufman, Smith or Cherokee [or any other place I've search] in 1870. I think at this point with the information you have furnished that I can rule out the probability that R. J. McNorton is buried in any one of many unmarked graves in Loftin Cemetery. If he died in MS in 1862 or 1863 I would think the chances of his being brought back to Smith Co, TX for burial would be slim to none. There is one CSA monument in Loftin Cem for E. R. Stripling 24 Dec 1835 - 7 Jun 1918, Sgt Co D 22 Texas Inf, CSA but no marker of any kind for any McNorton. Rex

Many of the men were taken to the Texas General Hospital near Quitman, MS. There is a cemetery for the hospital, but no (or very few) individual markers. In recent years, a marker was put up listing men known to have died at the hospital from the existing hospital records (McNorton is not among them, see http://www.civilwarhome.com/texashospital.htm Justin M. Surnames: McNorton Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FkB.2ACE/1555.1 Message Board Post: Richard J. McNorton served as a private in Co E, 6th Texas Cavalry. Co E was raised primarily in Van Zandt, but contained some Kaufman County men, especially those from the Cedar Grove area. Cedar Grove is listed as McNorton's post office in the 1860 Census-- it was a prosperous village in Kaufman county at the time, with a school, mill, and several stores. It was located near the Van Zandt county line, west of present Wills Point. According to my very brief notes on McNorton's service records, he was wounded in the legs at Corinth, MS (3-4 Oct 1862, the 6th saw some heavy fighting as a rear-guard) and died some time later (probably soon thereafter). 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: McNorton, Anderson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FkB.2ACE/1555 Message Board Post: The 1860 census for Kaufman, Kaufman Co, TX has R. J. McNorton, 25, br abt 1834 in NC. He is shown as a Merchant. His wife was Edna [indexed as Edner], 25 br abt 1834, AL and their child was John N. McNorton, 1, br abt 1858, TX. The Texas Marriage Collection 1814-1909 has a marriage 24 Dec 1866 between Mrs. E. A. McNorton and Ludwig Anderson in Smith Co, TX. The 1870 census for Cherokee Co, TX has Leutrot [should have been Ludvig] Anderson living with Edney [should be Edna] Anderson, 34, br abt. 1836, AL and John McNorton, 11, br abt 1959, TX. The 1880 census for Cherokee Co, Texas has Ludrick [should have been Ludvig] Anderson living with Edna Anderson 44, br abt 1836, AL and two Anderson children. Loftin Cemetery, Smith Co, TX has tombstones for Ludvig Anderson, br 7 Aug 1837, d. 30 Dec 1928 and Edna Anderson b. 10 Oct 1836, d. 7 Feb 1899. I have been unable to locate R. J. McNorton br abt 1834, NC on any census after the 1860 census. Nor have I found any burial location for R. J. McNorton. Assuming John McNorton, child of R. J. and Edna, 1 yr old in 1860 in Kaufman Co is the same John McNorton 11 yr old in 1870 living with Ludvig and Edna Anderson in Cherokee Co and that Mrs. E. A. McNorton married to Ludvig Anderson in 1866 is the same person as Edna McNorton, wife of R. J. McNorton in 1860, then perhaps R. J. McNorton died between 1860 and 1866. And information on R. J. McNorton would be appreciated. I am not related but working on a special project and would like to know what happened to R. J. McNorton. Since he is shown as a merchant in Kaufman Co in 1860 any additional information on what store, etc, military service or death , burial location, anything... Thanks, Rex Kirby
