Tx Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Kaufman/11055 Surname: TUCKER, LONG, LYNCH, HUNT, SIMPSON, HARMON, DAVIDSON, STANCEL ------------------------- I have found my Grandfather Elijah Milton Tucker's Tucker ancestors but I am still searching for his mother Mary Ann "Mollie" Harmon's family as well as Vidella Davidson Tucker's family. Mollie's brother Robert Harmon and his family were in the 1920 Dallas Census but that is the only clue so far. The Forney area of Kaufman Co. late 1800's early 1900's and the Mesquite area of Dallas Co. seems to be where most of the families were located. I would be glad to share the large amount of info I have found and any help on the missing ones would be appreciated. Sue [email protected]

    1. [TXKAUFMA-L] Smiths and James in Stubbs Community
    2. Doris Haynes
    3. I'm trying to find what the connection was to the Smith and James families in the Stubbs (Pyle Prairie) community. On the 1860 census in HH #100 of James W. Smith, a 17 year old John James was listed as a laborer. Nearby in # 112 lived a Percilla James, head of household (possibly widowed) also listed an 18 year old John James. (maybe a double enumeration ?) On the 1870 census a 15 year old Wesley Smith was listed in James Smith's household. The James family is not listed on this census. Then I find where a W.W. Smith married an Ella James 25 Jan 1896. Is this Smith family related to the Wesley Smith that lived west and south of Lively store in the 1940's? Any help on either of these families is appreciated. 1. Re: [TXKAUFMA-L] 1904 Marriage Record???
    2. I had a similar problem. I knew my grandparents were married at the home of my grandmother in Nolan Co., TX. but Nolan had no record. While checking on a birth certificate of my father in Howard Co., I asked if there was a marriage on file for his parents My grandfather was working in Big Spring for the railroad and had gotten the license in Howard Co., It was filed in Howard after the wedding in Nolan Co. (A little aside) The license was applied for on my Grandmothers 21st birthday but the marriage was 7 months later in the summer. This was in 1802/03 It has been my experience to search all surrounding counties . You never know what you might find. Susan Young Medford OR

    1. Re: [TXKAUFMA-L] Where Would I Find Record of MARRIAGE - 1904 Terrell, TX
    2. Kathey Kelley Hunt
    3. Marriage Licenses have been issued in Kaufman County since 1848, and except for a time in 1856, the records here are in good shape. By 1904 the record keeping was pretty much as it is today and complete. If you have checked with the Kaufman County Clerk and they found no record of the marriage record & a Look Up Volunteer didn't have it listed then that is telling you the couple probably did not take out a License from Kaufman County; they were still more than likely "joined in Holy Matrimony" while standing in Terrell Texas.... Many folks got their Licenses from other counties, then married in their homes or family churches......still do today. Van Zandt County if they lived on the east side of Kaufman County, Dallas & Ellis Co's on the west, Rockwall & Hunt Co's on the north & Henderson Co (and even Navarro Co ) on the south. My suggestion is to check in those counties for a Marriage Record. Good Luck. Kathey K Hunt Kaufman TX

    1. [TXKAUFMA-L] 1904 Marriage Record???

    3. Posted on: Kaufman Co. Tx Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Kaufman/11043 Surname: ------------------------- Sharon asked: "Were marriage records kept for Kaufman Co. in 1904? My niece check with the county clerk's office several years ago, and they said they couldn't find it. I asked a nice volunteer to look it up, and she couldn't find it in her book." Yes, Kaufman county marriage records are essentially complete back to 1848. So, if there is no license recorded in Kaufman county in 1904, it probably means that they didn't obtain the license from Kaufman county. In current law (and I think this held true in 1904 and before) is that a license is valid throughout the state. So someone could obtain the license in Dallas county, say, and then have the ceremony performed in Kaufman Co. If they lived in Forney and were wanting to get married on the sly, they may have obtained the license in Dallas so as not to tip off any local folks to their plans. I'd suggest any of the surrounding counties as possible places to look for the license with Dallas preferred since it was easy to get there by train in 1904. Yet another twist is the possibility of a "marriage without formalities" (aka "common-law marriage"), where the man and woman can get married without going through the legal formalities of getting a license (they can even dispense with the marriage ceremony itself too). But I would think that if they bothered to get a minister to do a ceremony, they probably got a marriage license (somewhere), too. Justin M. Sanders
