W. Pemberton as Washington Pemberton, son of Gideon and Mahala Pemberton, if I'm reading the email correctly. But... sigh... I can't find my Gideon, as Gideon or Washington, on the 1880 or 1900 censuses. I did find what looks like his family with _George_ W. Pemberton as head of household! That was on the 1900 Soundex; my time ran out before I got the 1880 located.

To the List: If you have Tennessee roots you will be interested in a new publication titled "The Reconstructed 1810 Census of Tennessee." To be published in June, this 600-page volume will include more than 30,000 records of citizens of Tennessee in 1810. Since nearly all of the original census was destroyed many years ago, this reconstructed census will be an invaluable research tool. The work is based on names extracted from tax lists, court minutes, church records, wills, deeds and other sources dated 1809-1811 in Tennessee. The author made this extensive effort to track every adult male in Tennessee. In addition many entries for women, children, free blacks and slaves were also located. The book was complied by Charles A. Sherrill, a well-known Tennessee genealogist, librarian and lecturer. His earlier works include "Tennesseans in Court" and "Tennessee Convicts." For a sample page of text and ordering information, contact the author at this e-mail address: [email protected]
Hi Betty, I don't know if you have a copy of the book Prairieville by Helen Richman Wisdom. If so, this is a repeat. There are a few mentions of Carpenter in it. Page 38 lists Jno Carpenter as a Private in the Johnson Guards of Kaufman Co. as listed in the Marshall Texas Republican 2 Nov 1861 Page 145 lists Mr. and Mrs. Don Carpenter of Athens as patrons of the Pioneer Theatre production of Gran Quivira in 1938. Page 152 is a map of the Prairieville area Survey showing a 100 acre plot for Hyde Carpenter - I think this may be two separate families. Page 171 is a picture of the children in the Prairieville School 1933-1934 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Horace Carpenter is in the middle row. BTW their teacher was my grandmother, Veda Olson. Also, my gr-gr-grandparents, the Olsons, took in a young girl by the name of Callie Carpenter. Story goes, her parents died when she was about 14. She went to live with Ole Nicholas Olson and his wife Georgia Melissa Jones. Georgia and Callie were only 2 years apart in age. Callie was considered part of the family. Do you know if she might be related to your Carpenters? Her dates are 1882-1963. Lissa Johnston [email protected] I never intended to become a run-of-the-mill person. --Barbara Jordan

There are no school records in the kaufman County Library. After checking a couple of years ago, the only school records remaining in the archives of the county begin in the 1920's. Back as far as 1850-1860 schools were nearly non-existant in Kaufman County. Most students traveled to schools for long distances to attend classes or were schooled at home. if the person knows what area of the county the family lived in then the Kaufman History books could be checked for individual school information.
