Powell during the 1920's and 30's: "A trip to either of these towns required several days and sometimes weeks. Jefferson was reached via Fort Worth, Dallas, and on east over the old National road. This National Highway was one of the most famous passageways from the frontier to east Texas for many years. Just last week, July 6, 1936, I drove out to one of the famous camping grounds on this roar where early day travelers once spent the nights and many a noon-day meal over the camp fire while they quenched their thirst from cold sparkling water from the well still to be found here. This camping spot is some twenty miles out of Dallas and just east of the old ferry crossing on the east Fork of the Trinity. It was about a day's journey east from Dallas. The road can be traced very accurately across the ravines and small prairie spots here in the edge of Kaufman County some three miles south-west from Forney." At the time this was written Mr. Powell was connected to the Forney School system. Does anyone know of the area he mentions? Is there any trace of this road today? Thanks. Jim Barrett Bedford, TX

Hi Linda, I got this information from the Handbook Of Texas Online. There is some controversy over who actually ran the ferry crossing. My ggrandfather was William Porter Bateman. At one time he owned a large section of land on each side of the Trinity River at the listed location and it has been told in my family for several years that my Granddad ran the ferry. There may have been two. According to the property deeds, William Porter Bateman owned the property at this location. His granddaughter willed her part to be used as a sanctuary for animals. It is used as a game preserve to this day. PORTER'S BLUFF, TEXAS. Porter's Bluff, also known as Taos, was a ferry crossing and shipping point on the Trinity River during the second half of the nineteenth century. Located sixteen miles northeast of Corsicana just off Farm Road 85 in extreme northeastern Navarro County, it was one of the earliest settlements in the county. It was founded by Col. Robert H. Porter, who received a tract of land on the Trinity River in recognition for his service in the Texas Revolution.qv Porter conceived of establishing a major shipping center on the river to serve area plantations. In 1848, with the assistance of John H. Reagan,qv he platted the town and named it Taos. A ferry began operating sometime later, and by the late 1850s Taos was a thriving town with a blacksmith shop, several stores, and a sawmill. The town also served as a port for small steamboats, known as packets, which before the Civil Warqv plied the Trinity, brought supplies, and transported cotton downriver. Taos continued to prosper until the early 1870s, when the Houston and Texas Central Railroad extended its line from Bryan to Corsicana. Competition from the railroad effectively brought an end to the river traffic, and the town began to decline. The ferry continued to operate until the 1880s, when it was replaced by a bridge. A post office under the name Porter's Bluff opened in 1900 but was discontinued in 1904, and by the mid-1930s the community was a ghost town. In 1990 no traces of the town remained. No population estimates were available. I hope this information will be helpful. Jerry Bateman ([email protected])
